I keep wondering how heavy that ball is that gets dropped at Times Square on New Year’s Eve, and wonder how much damage it could do if it slipped loose and plummeted to the ground.
This year’s weighs 11,875 pounds. Not sure it can slip loose, since it travels down a column.
When I was a kid, I always imagined the ball was dropped in free fall, and shattered in spectacular fashion on the ground below.
The first time I was allowed to stay up late enough to watch it, I was very disappointed that it just was slowly lowered down a column.
I had always heard about the ball dropping, then, about 15 years ago or so I finally watched it (on TV) and was surprised at how boring it was.
