So after sinking 75 hours (!) of my life into inquisition - I have come in search of game recommendations. In general I like action RPGs or strategy RPGs and a good storyline is an important part of a game for me.
Must be available for xbox360 or Wii U (which can also play Wii games, convenient since there are basically no Wii U games ). I don’t currently have a gaming PC right now so no PC recommendations please (particularly since I really want to buy one right now but can’t afford it). I could possibly be persuaded to buy a ps4 since the only thing stopping me is the lack of appealing games for me.
Games I expect to be recommended that I’ve already played include skyrim, the other dragon ages, mass effect and fallout.
Witcher 3, but it would require you to get either PS4 or xbox One. I had no interest in it until I heard a glowing review. Very happy I picked that one up.
If you’re looking for an excuse to upgrade your machine and like action RPGs with a good storyline, this may be the one to justify your upgrade.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a solid fantasy RPG in the vein of Elder Scrolls/Dragon Age. The game’s developers include a bunch of high-quality talent, including Todd McFarlane (Spawn), Ken Ralston (lead designer for TES Morrowind/Oblivion), and R.A. Salvatore (author of the Forgotten Realms novels). It is available on PS3/Xbox360.
Dishonored was a lot of fun for me and had a similar system of powering up.
Borderlands is A LOT of fun, and also had a good amount of leveling up with it. I started with Borderlands 2, but I think there is some mega disk out now that has 1, 2, and a bunch of extras and stuff
Also, might be dumb, but did you play Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic? It’s Bioware’s first outing IIRC
Kingdoms of Amalur, Borderlands (1 & 2) and Diablo 3 all have their moments, although they’re not quite top tier in my book. There’s also Jade Empire: I thought the story was interesting, although the fighting was not really my cup of tea.
I played the first one on PC and wasn’t particularly gripped. The combat particularly was just “click a fighting style and click the enemy”. Is the 3rd one different in that regard? (also the “sexy” cards you get if you sleep with someone were a bit weird)
I don’t have recommendations sorry, I’ve just started Dragon Age Inquisition now. I will say that I recently bought a PS4 and don’t regret it at all. I come from an Xbox background but got the PS4 after figuring that the strengths of the Xbone didn’t gel with how I use a console (I just play games and have no great use for connectivity / multi-media features). It’s a nice unit, the lack of an external power supply was a big selling point for me.
Xbox 360 has Skyrim, Mass Effect 1 & 2, and Fallout 3 & New Vegas if you haven’t played those. All top tier games. It has Dark Souls, too, although I haven’t got around to playing.
The Witcher series changed combat a lot between 1 and 2, or so I gather as I’ve only played 2. I liked it a lot, though. Not that it helps any, I don’t think it’s available on Xbox 360.
Only recommendation I can (sort of) make for the Wii is Skyward Sword, which I didn’t even finish. I see that Xenoblade Chronicles is highly rated.
Almost forgot to mention Deus Ex and to second Borderlands.
Dark Souls is a bit different. I enjoy playing it but I tend to come to grinding halt at some point and don’t come back to it (this has happened on Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Bloodbourne.) It’s a different type of game to the other’s mentioned.
Are you suggesting people play Skyrim, Fallout 3 or any other Bethesda/Gamebryo game on a console ? Far from the patches and the mods and most importantly the debugging console for when the game still throws a cog ? What a cruel, moustache-twirlingly villainous thing to do. Shame on you, sir, I say shame !

Dark Souls* is a fantastic game. It is also hard and frustrating as balls, so be very warned. But then, it being so punishing is what makes it so rewarding each time you manage to climb over the wall of bullshit that you had been banging your head on for the past 4 hours. Then you meet the next wall, of course :D. Dark Souls 2 has a bit less complete bullshit, is a bit more user-friendly also but I don’t know how well it runs on the 360, seeing as it’s more of a next-gen game.
Witcher 2 is available on the 360. It’s a great story-driven action/RPG.
Skyrim and Fallout 3 ran fine on my stepson’s 360. Can’t remember any bugs, actually, although I’m sure there are some. Main drawback was the loading times when changing areas, which could run over 10 seconds in Skyrim.
Witcher 3 is a tremendous improvement from the first game, and a very big improvement over the second.
Combat isn’t just a clicky timing game. The new mechanics are pretty good IMO (though I’ve heard others say that Dark Souls does the melee-action thing better). You need to watch for signs of enemy attacks, dodge a lot, and carefully position yourself so you can get behind an enemy without letting them get behind you. You’ll also need to use the various special attacks (like magic signs and bombs) to interrupt and counter enemies. Each enemy is fairly unique, and the game rewards you for preparing for each fight.
And while Witcher 3 still has a fair amount of gratuitous nudity and sex, it’s nowhere as skeevy and immature as the first game. It’s now similar to what you see in Game of Thrones, in that it usually involves plausible relationships with well-rounded characters, but occasionally the game has you visit somewhere like a brothel because LOOK TITIES IN THE BACKGROUND.
(Combat in Witcher 2 is a bit clumsier, but still decent and an improvement over the first game. And its dose of gratuitous sex and nudity is similar to, say, some of the shows on Showtime)
What about Xenoblade Chronicles? It’s a really, really fun game. The only thing is you have to try to not burn yourself out on sidequests because it’s very easy to do so. Especially since the sidequests can be a bit MMO-y most of the time. The story is really, really good though, and the combat system is really fun (when you’re not hilariously overleveled at least).
The only issues is that if you’re in the US copies are… not exactly cheap. In Europe it just came out on the Wii U eshop, it’s likely to happen in the US eventually, though there are a few doubts due to an exclusivity distribution contract between Nintendo and Gamestop for the one and only print run the game had in the US.
Concur. And 2 was already night and day compared to 1 in terms of gameplay (in that it, yanno, *had *some :)), graphics, dialogue/translation or sex politics. It still has some mildly juvenile humour (like the hero at one point taking LSD-like drugs as part of a ritual and dreaming of fighting a giant cock. The bird.), but it’s not downright skeevy like the first could be.
As for 3, it is simply a masterpiece of gaming. In 15 years, people will still talk about that game the way we old farts talk about* Baldur’s Gate* 2 or Deus Ex.
Oh, hey, speaking of which, Scathach have you played Deus Ex:Human Revolution ? It’s on the 360, and it’s pretty good.
Witcher 3 is amazing, but it’s kind of a shame its leveling system is complete shit. I mean, it’s not like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion broken, but it is not a good system. To the point that while it’s not a big deal, I legitimately think the game would have been better without it.
What was the problem with the leveling system? I mean, I think there’s bound to be something wrong when you’re not chomping at the bits to distribute your new power points. There didn’t seem to be much worth taking, so I usually had 10-15 points lying around until I felt like seeing if there was anything I cared about. Investing in the whirling attack paid off, but the vast majority of options seemed to be for people with a very different play style. Other than that, what was the problem?
The game has received a new patch on PC, which enables all sorts of goodies, like Steam workshop support, support for wide screen monitors, gamepad support, and some bug fixes.
The huge restoration mod is also available on the workshop - it restores a ton of content that was cut from the game.
Also, if you CAN afford a PS4, you can afford a gaming PC, although you JUSt missed a nice deal. Dell had their Alienware Alpha for $350! That’s cheaper than a PS4, for a tiny gaming PC that is SMALLER than it, and performs better than it in a number of games. YOu also don’t have ot compromise in terms of a gmaing library.
