Windows 10 - Laptop Won't Shut Down Completely

I upgraded my laptop from Windows 8 to 10, and ever since have been having trouble with it not shutting down completely. I'll select "shut down" and it appears to go through the steps to do so. The screen turns off, it doesn't respond to any keystrokes, and I'll hear the laptop go silent. However something is continuing to use the battery. Any time I try to start the laptop after it's been "shut down" for several hours, the battery is completely drained and must be plugged in. If the battery has not drained completely, I have to push and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, wait a bit, and then push it again for the laptop the boot up (with substantially diminished battery).

It's gotten rather annoying. What settings do I need to change in order to get it to shut completely down the first time?

What manufacturer and model?

For example here are some discussions of HP:

Probably a shot in the dark, but what's your antivirus? I have a K55N that exhibited the same behavior until I removed (not just uninstalled) Avast; after that, the constant shutdown problems went away. I still have trouble when shutting down if the screensaver had kicked in any time during the session, but that appears to be something else entirely.

when you are attempting to shutdown:
  1. click the windows-button (on windows "taskbar")
  2. navigate to "shutdown"
  3. hover your mouse in front of "shutdown"
  4. depress your "shift" key on keyboard
  5. click "shutdown" with mouse.
also might take note of % of battery-life before shutting down and then compare when you boot up the following day.

Huh. So what's the deal with holding the "shift" key?

OttoDaFe I do not have an antivirus installed. Good idea though!

albino_manatee what does holding the shift key do? I'll give it a shot today when I shut the computer down.

I'm not sure why, but holding the shift key seems to have done it! Battery was at 97% this morning.
