Labor Day weekend, Turbo Dog and I have a good reason to go to KY. Gonna meet up with Hama and hubby, probably around the Lexington area (subject to change) and enjoy a long weekend away from work. We are still in the planning stages and thought we'd throw out the idea of a mini (or maxi) dopefest one night.. or two. Seems there are a few of you in the general area so if anyone would like to join us...

in KY...

and get lubed up...

and then...

Do dinner!!! And maybe a few drinks!!!! And maybe...

well, let's just say dinner and drinks for now

Any interest? Any suggestions?

As a Lexington Doper, I might be able to be talked into it. (I don't know what I'm doing that weekend.)

DoctorJ... Very cool Can I email ya and bug ya for info on the area?

oldscratch... I flunked geography. I don't even know where KY is, much less how far it is from anywhere! All I know is it's about a 7 hour drive or so from St. Louis But my friend Mapquest tells me that it's about 385 miles from Atlanta.

Actually, oldscratch, it is exactly 392 miles from Atlanta to Lexington. So take quite a few from my first guesstimate.

Not sure if I'll be here, but I live in the Heart of the Bluegrass!

(Hi thinksnow! I'm ridiculously excited about the white elephant exchange.)

Tequila, you can email me too. I'm a font of wisdom about the Commonwealth.

Well, I can't be there (I live in Wasington State), but my brother (tpayne), an occasional doper, does live in KY.

May I suggest Joe Bologna's as a meeting site?

(love those breadsticks!)

Oh no... if I can't go home for a dopefest then you can't go to KY either.

I'd like to drive up there to see the 'rents and hang out that weekend, but I'll be going to Dragon-Con in Atlanta. Have fun kids! And I'll definitely second Joe Bologna's as a place to eat. It's on Maxwell street. Second best pizza I've ever had there.

I can't be there myself, since I'm not in KY anymore, but if I could, I would second Joe Bologna's. It is one of the most awesome restaurants on Earth. It's in an old church building (the former Jewish synagogue, actually) and the architecture alone is worth the visit. And if you don't like Italian, they make a mean bacon cheesburger.

Hope the Dopefest is a huge success!

Yes, Joe B's is a fine establishment. The bar is where the altar of the church used to be, which delights atheists like myself. Just don't make the newbie mistake of ordering multiple breadsticks--believe me, one is generally enough.

I hope I'll be able to make any Lexington Doper festivities, but there's a 25% chance I'll be on call that night. (I'm an Acting Intern on the medicine ward next month.)

As the gracious Ms. Mockingbird mentioned in the OP, I'll be there as ell, with Tark and kidlings in tow...and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend decent inexpensive hotel/motels in the area, and maybe points of interest as well? The oldest kid is 6, so museums and the like are out...

And I hope something can be pulled together, this sounds entertaining.

Actually... there is the Lexington Children's Museum. They'd probably really enjoy that. It's kind of small, but everything is hands on. It's on Short Street right next to Lexington Children's Theatre... ((where I used to work. )) Plus all the Victorian Square shops are around there, so that's kind of a cool thing to do. And DeSha's is also there. They make a very wicked Hot Brown, not at as good as Ramsey's or Columbia's, but still pretty dang good.

Also, I would suggest Keeneland as a point of interest. If you're gonna go to Lexington, KY (The horse capital of the world.), you might as well look at some horses.

Simetra, I'm sure we know people in common. I work at KET.

Hamadryad, my oldest is 6 too! The Children's Museum is pretty good, though small. There are many, many hotels to choose from in all price ranges. Do you want to be near downtown? Then you'll have the Hyatt and Radisson to contend with. If you're interested in the more Holiday Inn-type places, I can help you out. Email me and I'd be glad to peruse the phone book. If you know where you all and Ms. Mock and the Dog will be meeting up with you, I can place you in approximately the correct part of town.

Back to the kiddies, our parks are pretty nice, with new playground equipment. Woodland Park is centrally located and has a playground that's toddler-size. There is a public pool, which should still be open through Labor Day. It was recently remodeled in the 'water park' style. Nearby is Ramsey's, another good restaurant, if you're up fer home cookin.'

Doctor J -- I've always been amused by the altar-as-bar, though not atheist. Catholics have a sense of humor too.

<bump>

Is this being planned? Is it still on for Lexington? Are you ignoring me in the fervent hope I won't come skulking around?

Anyway, I wanted to mention that, while you can visit Keeneland, the fall meet isn't until October, so if you go there you won't see any actual horses. Many thoroughbreds may be viewed for free from the comfort of your vehicle, if you care to drive around the Fayette County countryside.

I hope everyone who visits has a good time!

Well, per Tequila Mockingbird this will happen this weekend at a Comfort Suites. I will try to come down there on Saturday night. Let me know how to find you if you depart to parts unknown, particularly if there is no one registered under the name of Mockingbird, Snow, Dude, Dr J, Simetra, Xizor, Hamadryad, etc., you get the picture.

Also, is there some sort of cleansing or purification ritual involving a sacrifical virgin and Superdude or Thinksnow? This may be something to be done, you know, better safe than sorry.

Any rules against an absolute, fresh-as-falling-snow newbie joining in on the reindeer games? I was beyond hope that the Dope would roll around to the Bluegrass. By the way, Lexington has something along the lines of a Discovery Zone (or is it Kids Zone?) that has all sorts of activities for the kids to run themselves to an early nap while parents can take a much needed respite.

Emails have been sent. I haven't yet made any reservations because I don't know how many are planning to attend, and if anyone is bringing their SO, grandmother, friends, etc. Much thanks Ellen, you are now officially my hero for finding the info for Joe B's.
Cherry_Blossom_, you are more than welcome to come to this little event, though I doubt it'll come close to levels of debauchery acheived in Chicago. Well, maybe it will, after all think is coming.....erhm, he's planning to attend anyway.

Okay, I'm sort of trying to arrange this from St Louis, so there's no real "set" plans, other than dinner at Joe B's at 5:30 or 6 on Sat night. I haven't made reservations yet because I am unsure of how many people are planning to attend. I guess I could ask for a table of 20 or so... I am looking forward to meeting everyone! I am also planning to bring my digi cam, so consider yourselves warned

I will try to leave a message at the desk of the hotel that we and Ham will be at, something along the line's of "Uncle Cecil's Reunion Party"...not sure if the hotel will comply... If they don't, ask for Laurel Brooks. We should be there sometime Friday early afternoon.

Comfort Suites
5527 Athens Boonesboro Rd
Lexington, KY
(859) 263-0777

I also am planning to take along my laptop, so I should be able to receive emails.

Just winging it right now, but anybody who is in the area is more than welcome to drop by!

I think you're thinking of Kids Place ( http://www.lexingtonathleticclub.com/kidsPlace/ ). I do their website (well, the company I work for does, and I'm the one that does the actual work on it.) Kids Place makes me wish I was young enough to play on all the equipment, but bleah, I'm not. I'm another Lexington-person, but unfortunately, I will be gone to WV for the weekend to visit my family.

As for Joe Bologna's: I don't think they take reservations. I would recommend calling them ahead of time, and if they don't, plan on eating a fairly early dinner, because the wait there can get ridiculously long. (can you say run-on sentence?) If you find it unbearable, there's a pretty good Indian restaurant behind it that's not all that busy at dinnertime.

As for seeing horses, I would recommend the KY Horse Park. It's pretty easy to find: just get on 75 N, and you'll see signs to it. I've never been, but I've only heard good things about it.

Something else to do, at night: Walk downtown. Triangle Park, right beside Rupp Arena, is beautiful at night. It's a pretty safe area, too. It's across from the aforementioned DeSha's. Also, be sure not to miss the castle in Versailles. Just drive out Versailles Road (US 60, towards Versailles), and you'll see it on your right, about five miles outside of Lexington.) Oh.. and be sure to get some Graeter's ice cream. Look in the phonebook for locations. It's some of the best ice cream you'll ever eat (and recently featured on the Food Network.)

Enough from me. I hope everyone has fun in Lexington, and enjoys the town immensely. It's not the most touristy place on earth, but it's a nice town. If you have any questions I might be able to answer, just post them here!

Since Joe Bologna's tends to get crowded at dinner, what about trying for lunch? Then we could go to a park (I'd suggest Woodland), so the kids could run around, and the adults could still talk, in a nice outdoor setting. The more ambitious could go to Kids Place. (I've been there a number of times; it's huge and the kids have a ball. It's a favorite birthday party spot.)

I won't be able to do anything Saturday night, so I would prefer an afternoon gathering -- but if evening is more convenient for everyone, please do that.

Isn't the UK-UofL football game there this weekend? That might adversely affect dining and parking plans. Just something to keep in mind.

Just when you think you have the perfect plan... curses, foiled again!

I had accepted an invitation to a colleague's house in Ft. Mitchell to watch the England v Germany World Cup Qualifier at 1 pm and then thought I could just mosey on down I-75 to Lexington by about 5 pm.

Should be able to get there by 4 pm, though. Does anyone care about Wildcat football? ::ducks and runs::

Just let me know how the plans shift and I'll adjust accordingly.

[/b]SportsHusband informs me that the UK - UofL football game begins at 12:30 pm EDT -- so an evening meeting at Joe B's is most definitely OUT. Early afternoon is perfect! 1:00 'tis. See y'all there (with two more darling children/rugrats in tow).

I'm pretty sure the hotel you all have chosen is In The Middle of Nowhere, so no bars will be available nearby. However, Joe B's is downtown, so you should be able to find some suitable dive, er, hangout for the Evening Dopefest.

Something else to keep in mind:

As with all DopeFests, how many of y'all actually know each other? What I mean is, assuming Joe B's doesn't take reservations, are there going to be a couple little packets of folk sitting around going "Is that them? Oh, what about over there...that might be someone!"

To help combat this, I'll be in my patented Hawaiian DopeFest shirt (probably red, maybe blue.) It shouldn't be too hard to spot a 6'3" Marine in a Hawaiian shirt holding a digital camera.

I don't know any of you! But if you click on the link below, you'll see what I look like, more or less. I'll wear the same earrings, so's you'll know.

Maybe the first one there could give a group name -- didn't someone suggest something to do with Cecil? The Cecil Adams Group. Although I suppose Dope Fiends could be attractive. But I'm almost positive they'll put us upstairs; downstairs is all booths. (It's an open, balcony upstairs, with ample view of the bar/altar.) So, any questions, head for the stairs.

Who's coming? Have we heard from DoctorJ?

Traffic should be thinned out by 1:00. The place could be filled with game-watchers, so I don't think we'll have outrun the crowd much. But there is a lot of room.

Hawaiian shirt, eh? Interesting choice for a Mr. Snow.

Pictures and quotes

A small, quiet DopeFest it was, where the adults were outnumbered by those under the age of 7, but I think we can call this one a success.

In attendence were:Tequila Mockingbird, TurboDog and children, Hamadryad, Tark and children, Ellen and children, and Myself.

Pictures
are up.

Some quotes:[list][*]TM:So...should we get a six-pack and go to the park?[*]Ellen:Another few inches and I'd be happy.[*]HamaYou can step on my head if you want to.[*]Ellen (talking about websites): I can just go in and...well, I don't know. I have no idea what I'm talking about.[*]Hama: I'm a champion whiner..."But I don't want to put my clothes back on!"[*]Hama Hey! Quit messing with my hump![*]Ellen: Lexington- Famous for horses and sluts.

It was very nice to meet y'all, hope some of those ballons made it home!

Crud! That was tonight! And you were in Woodland Park, only a few blocks from the Dr. J Compound!

I started my Acting Internship at the VA this week, and might as well have been on another planet. I wouldn't have been any fun anyway, since I was on last night and this morning and I've slept pretty much ever since.

Glad you guys had a blast, though...

Dr. J
