14th Annual SDMB Early Super Bowl Pick Contest

It's that time of year again! The playoff teams are set, so it's time for our annual contest -- can you predict the Super Bowl a month before the game and join our list of champions?:

Year 1: Trillionaire
Year 2: Uncommon Sense
Year 3: Airman Doors, USAF
Year 4: Grits and Hard Toast
Year 5: Hal Briston (woohoo!)
Year 6: dalej42
Year 7: Justin_Bailey
Year 8: Hamlet
Year 9: Hal Briston (woohoo again!)
Year 10: enalzi
Year 11: Jahiegel
Year 12: borschevsky
Year 13: Oakminster

It's simple to play -- just post your pick for the two Super Bowl teams, and the final score. Deadline for submissions will be 4:00 pm Eastern on Saturday, January 7th (just before kickoff of the first playoff game).

As for my prediction: Oh baby...time for my third title! As it turns out, the Giants didn't actually blow their "every four years" pattern, they just sort of...delayed it by a year. In any case, I'm going with the pick that has given me my two previous titles in this game:
Giants 38, Patriots 35
(I actually don't think it will be nearly that high of a score, but that exact pick has worked for me twice before, so who am I to fuck with fate?)

PLEASE NOTE: It's not an absolute requirement, but it's very helpful to me if you format your pick the same way I did above -- "Winning team name and score, losing team name and score", on its own line. No locations, just the name. Feel free to add any other commentary on a separate line. Thanks!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As always, just in case you don't follow football but still wanna play along, just pick an AFC team, an NFC team, and a couple of numbers that sound vaguely football-scorish.

AFC Teams:
New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers

NFC Teams:
Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks

Honestly, it'll probably be the Patriots, but I'm taking a risk since everyone else is picking them.

I'm voting with my heart instead of my head this year. I honestly don't feel very confident about the Seahawks, but I'm going to have faith.

No Texans picked yet, even as an underdog?

Would be a home stadium game, but yeah, not even midseason last year's Oswiler could pull that off.

Raiders and Dolphins have nobody picking as a long shot so far, either.

AncientHumanoid, I can't see the Texans getting past the Patriots in Foxboro. Or at home, for that matter. I do think they'll beat the Carr-less Raiders handily, though very ugly.

Though I still admire the Texans' boldness in going after Osweiler, Hamlet was right as rain when he said at the time that it was a very silly decision by the team. I disagreed, and boy, was I wrong.

Not sure that Trubisky, or anyone else they should be looking at in the bottom of Round 1, is going to be the answer either. Sigh.

That's much closer to result I wanted to make. The only reason I didn't was, as I said in my OP, that the pick I made has won this for me twice before. Of course, that's because I was the only one to pick NYG over NE.

So basically, if you win, I'm going to be so goddamn pissed off at you.

(Of course, that'll be tempered by the Giants whupping up on the Pats again.)

I must vote for the Steelers if I wish to remain sleeping in the house. And the man cave/car shop is just too cold.

Unless they wear those stupid Bumble Bee uniforms, then someone can just kick their asses.

Wow, the Cowboys are 1-13 in 37 picks. Talk about being 13-3 in the regular season but getting so little respect that Dallas Jones will not pick them to win even 2 playoff games

I haven't ever entered in previous years. Can you briefly describe the algorithm by which the winner is determined?

Sorry, Hal. As you can see, I don't post much, but as a daily lurker I should know better to read the whole op BEFORE I reply. Living in Patriots Nation, I'm getting the feeling that the last team the Pats want to face in the Super Bowl is the Giants. Dan Shaughnessy devoted an entire column to it in the Boston Globe last week.

I cleaned up on a few bets the first SB they faced off, taking almost two touchdowns and the Gi'nts. Wonder what the spread will be if it comes to that again?

There is a lengthy discussion in the 2011 thread that begins before post #85 (linked) that may help you understand how the tiebreakers work.

So, I was getting ready to write out all the tiebreakers only to find out I already did it 6 years ago.

Except, according to that discussion, you got the last two backwards: O/U apparently supersedes MoV.

No, I had total score first, then margin of victory. Which is what I think we've stuck with? That's how I won.

Last year we went with number of points the prediction was off from winning team score plus the number of points off from the losing team score (proposed by SenorBeef in post #48 and approved by Hal somewhere on page 2).
