Well, if nobody needs you to wire funds to Nigeria before accepting the hardware you can downgrade these guys from "potential scammers" to "genuine bumblers: probably not a great long-term prospect."

I hear what you're saying, but it's a paycheck for now and any non-payments will be a loss to the contract firm rather than me.

Unless the staffing firm is on the scam, in which case you still don't get paid.

Oh yeah, if they're genuine you can take the job and get paid while you look for something better.

It's hard to say what the scam would be at this point, since the contractor has told the employer to pay for the equipment themselves. The risk now seems to be the financial viability of the employer.

I doubt that the contractor and the employer are colluding to scam me out of a week or two of work. What good would my work be to a failing company?

I just had a troubling thought. They could order the stuff with stolen credit info. I'd be the one picking it up and signing for it. That would certainly be a nightmare!

Crap-I should have remembered that scam.
Why is it that have no one available at all to pick up their own equipment that they themselves ordered, and have to rely on a temp on his first day, again?

I just emailed the contractor and suggested that the company either pick it up themselves or have it delivered to their office.

I just phoned him again. He didn't answer and It went to voicemail. We'll see if he calls back.
Celidin has expressed some concerns about the contracting firm in a PM.

He just called back. I don't have to do anything except show up for work on Tuesday. They'll have equipment for me to work on.

So if Tuesday morning I show up and the office is empty and the contractor's phone number is dead, at least I'll be in the clear.

In cases like this they would go after the only company rep they can nail.

That would be you.

Yeah, but you still have the "Murder you and sell your organs" threat that each new employee faces.

Okay. I'll just say that I'm not actually an employee and can't sign for deliveries and that someone else will have to sign.

But seriously, we're getting way over the top in scam complexity.

Sure, this is the Dope! When you ask us how this might be a scam or attempt to steal your identity, we're going to come up w/ a plethora of ideas that will satisfy that suggestion.

And you'd better post here as soon as you can on Tuesday. I'll be relieved if you touch base with a "No worries! Normal company, normal job, normal people who've been with the company for years and like their job."

Though I might be secretly hoping for a soap opera involving stolen computers and a dummy building and a treasure hunt for the real CEO and millions deposited in an offshore account in your name in a foiled attempt to implicate you ... and you narrowly avoiding being framed for the murder of the recruiter.

Try Glassdoor, if you haven't already. You might find some inside info from employee there.

Hmm. That could be the explanation for the elaborate ruse done simply to score a Macbook. They would then have a Macbook purchased in my name with which to do nefarious things that I would be blamed for!

Well played. Just wanted to make sure.

I'd feel terrible if come Tuesday you posted "Well, they said I seemed paranoid. I did keep swiveling my head, peering into darkened offices and dialing 911 and saying 'No emergency...yet!" Oh, and my new boss walked up behind me and I got her in a headlock, thinking the Kleenex she was holding was full of chloroform."

Cyborgs made using MacBooks? That'd never work... "Look, I'm trying to give you the bionic finger, but Tim Cook didn't think to build that in. I might try this hack I found on Slashdot, but I should probably just wait and see if it's in iOS 12... But til then, pretend I'm making a rude gesture."

By the way, we have no idea what time zone davidm is in, how long his first day will be, and whether he needs to head straight to a bar afterwards (or the emergency room!). So I'm chillin'...

How long is the recovery period in a bathtub full of ice? Does it make the anesthesia last longer, or does it do the opposite?

The worst type of cyborg - you can't even install any of the good World Domination software.

Time to partition his brain and get Boot Camp set up.
