What little tricks can you do that mildly impress others?

Not looking for major skills or in-depth expertise, just little tricks that you can perform to liven up a (very) boring gathering.

I can:
  • Recite the alphabet backwards with ease
  • Juggle three balls
  • List the U.S. presidents in order
  • Perform a rubber band trick that always kills
  • Do some card tricks, some of which involve sleight of hand
  • Do that pen spinning around the thumb trick

And I am currently teaching myself to shuffle poker chips.

Whatta ya got?

mmm

That thing where you move a quarter (or half dollar) across your knuckles, flip it under your hand, and do it again, or reverse and move the coin backwards across your knuckles.

As in, have two stacks in your hand and press down on the mat and squeeze together, and ease up so that they form one stack neatly interwoven with each other? Or as in taking one stack in your hand and grabbing a few with the other hand and throwing them back on top so they eventually form a more-randomized stack? Because I can do the former, and was getting pretty good at the latter when I was playing Mage Knight, a board game with several stacks of poker-chip-sized monster cards that you need to randomize at the game beginning.

I can really wiggle my ears (still can't move them independently) - there are tiny scalp muscles behind and above the ear which I can, for gawd knows why, activate them.

After all these years, I really should have a larger repertoire...

I do a bar trick that gets some chuckles. Friends who have seen me perform the trick will mention it to someone, "See that guy, kayaker, over there? He can taste your beer and identify it".

So, there are 35 beers on draft and they think the trick sounds interesting. I pick up the glass, study it closely, take a sniff with my eyes closed. I grab a swizzle stick off the bar-caddy, dip it into the beer and sample a droplet. I close my eyes again and furrow my brow. Then I sigh, pick up the glass and drain it down my gullet. I belch, and guess what the beer was, often getting it right.

Then the "mark" says, "hey . . . my beer" and we all laugh.

It's hardly a party trick but I can name and place pretty much every country on the planet thanks to my obsession with learning the name and place of every country on the planet.

I can't do it in alphabetical order though. Sorry!

I used to do a bar trick with a cigarette, seemingly making it roll across the table on its own by creating a "field" around it. It's even more impressive if you have someone else in on it and sitting across from you calling bullshit.

Play music entirely by ear without ever seeing the sheet music for it

Name most countries on a blank world map, and draw them too

Lots of little bar tricks and magic tricks.
-I can coin snatch 16 quarters at a time.
-The rubber band trick from upthread (crazy man,s handcuffs).
-Balduccci levitation
-Rip an aluminium can into two pieces in under 5 seconds.

Most of this stuff is just to entertain nieces and nephews when they're young. Once they become teenagers it's not that cool anymore.

I can cock up one dubious eyebrow. For the life of me tho, I can only do it on one side. I find it fascinating, fascinating and a little frustrating, how completely unable I am to move my other eyebrow in the same direction. Like not even a little bit. Actually, when I concentrate on cocking my left eyebrow, I inadvertently end up cocking my right.

It's not really a trick. I'm fluent with Gregg shorthand and use it daily to take notes of instructions and messages from people at work. It always gets a double-take because youngsters have probably never even heard of the skill before.

I can independently move most of my muscles around. Rolling my stomach muscles from side to side and up and down, make my shoulder blades stick out, most all my muscles will work independently. When I was younger I did a lot of strength type maneuvers. I could climb stairs on my hands, climb 20 foot high ropes very quickly, do super fast push ups, most anything strength related. When the military came to our school for fitness evaluations, they told me I fell into the 1 in 10,000,000 category and possibly higher. I never liked or participated in sports or worked out.

I used to amaze my kids by making a box of kleenex disappear, one sheet at a time. It requires the person to actually be sitting right next to you while you do it, of course.

I can make musical notes by rapping myself on the top of my head with my knuckles and adjusting the pitch of the sound by opening or closing and shaping my mouth. I usually play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" that way to entertain small children. They love it.

I usually start by playing MHALL by slapping myself on the cheek with my mouth open, then do the head knuckling bit, and close out with my piece de resistance, nostril music.

I did the rubber band trick a long time ago, forgot entirely about it until now.
I can do several card tricks but one I've done one often enough with a well developed routine that it impresses people.
I can juggle three balls, and two balls one handed (no not that, two objects with one hand).
I can pick locks and crack safes. Not cold cracking safes, I need access to the safe when it's open a la Feynman, but I was doing it to government safes like he was before I knew he did it.
I can't do it anymore but I used to do a standing jump onto a table. Most people can, it just looks impressive, especially at my size, which necessitates a pretty sturdy table.
I can remove the end of my thumb and re-attach it, and shove a pencil up my nose and pull it out of my ear

The nice thing about a bar trick is it's in a bar... not a hotbed of critical thinking. So once you get past ten digits of Pi? Just start making 'em up. Somehow, no one even notices that I slip in 8675309 and other strings of numerals (with my face all scrunched up like I'm really concentrating...).

I often use my hands interchangeably.

My water glass or coffee cup is often on my left side. I typically use a fork in my right hand. I sometimes use my left.

I never know which hand will hold my roll to bite.

It has bothered my dates before. Maybe co-workers, but they don't say anything.

I have two hands. Why not use both?

I do that rubber band trick, but I like the technique in that video and will adopt it. Thanks!

I have a bunch of different magic tricks (I teach an after-school magic club sometimes), but the true weird talent I have is broom-balancing.

I can balance a broom on my hand. Hop it to the other hand. Hop it from finger to finger. Balance it on my foot, on my elbow, on my chin, on my nose.

I can take a broom-size stick in the woods and, if it's got a crook in it, make it spin on its end as I balance it on my hand.

I can take a ~2-foot stick and balance it in my hand, toss it in the air, and catch it balancing on the other end--or catch it balancing after a full 360 twirl. These last two tricks I'm still working on and can only do them about a quarter of the time--but I'm getting better.

When I was in High School someone told me what the numbers and letters meant for bra sixes. I started guessing them, and soon it was "He can totally guess your bra size!" I was right more often than not, and I was shocked that the (well I guess most of them were girls at the time, not women) thought it was cool. Surely the Victoria's Secret gals had a higher accuracy rate than I did.

One trick I never tried out was Astrology based but might fool some people. In Ohio your registration on your car expires on your birthday. Therefore the sticker on the back of your car shows your birth month. This narrows down their "sign" to one of two possibilities with one being favored, if I'm not mistaken.

If you know their car, you have the month, if not ask what they drive and sneak out if you're that sort of person. Then once they do something you can say "The way you did that thing, you must be an Aries". Then if they start to correct you you can say "I'm sorry I meant Taurus." If they're that type of person they will be at least mildly impressed.

My wife thinks Iím a master of humorous-acronym creation. An example from yesterday (though, admittedly, not my best work); My sis and I were talking about kids and how we might ďaccommodateĒ them at this event coming up. I wanted to do more and she said not to worry because they are "young, resilient, and donít give a shit". I said, jokingly (as I am wont to do), ďthose damn yardgassers, they donít appreciate nuthiní.
