Ok I got the smilie legend.
But why does it take 90 clicks to get back from the reply page to the topics page (not to the topic page it takes you back to automatically where you see your reply) but to the topic page where everone's topics are seen.

You silly. The reason why it takes 90 clicks is because the page that you go back to automatically reloads back to the page you were on.

Simple solution : look near the top of the page and click on the second folder above the "New Topic/Reply" buttons.

Or, if you have Netscape, hold down the back button until you get a menu of all the pages you've been to, and scroll to the first "The Straight Dope Message Board" below the name of the thread you are on.

Oh yeah, I think on IE there is a button next to "back" that lets you do that as well.
