You pay for air? Holy shit. The owners would get lynched here for trying that.
Just what I was thinking.
As I recall, there was actually an attempt in Australia to make us all pay for air. It was back when the big change occurred from petrol stations being full service to the self-service wonderland they are now, some time in the 70s’80s. As part of this economic rationalisation, they tried to float the “pay for air” thing, on the pretext of low margins, etc. There was a HUGE fuss about safety issues - having to pay would put people off properly inflating tyres, which could lead to disaster. The whole idea got quietly shelved.
It really sucks. As people are less likely to check on their tires because of the wimpy quarter at a time compressors. The air does not come from a tank, so you can’t fill your tires fast. But a small on demand compressor. It can take a long time to fill a tire.
