Retaining soda carbonation

You can turn over the bottle when you crack it open. You will allow the soda to shoot out into your glass while preserving some of the pressure. This will be messy but will work.

As for the OP, I am pretty sure it will go flat faster.

PLastic bottles loose their fizz quicker than glass over time because the PET is permeable to CO2. The gas leaks out through the plastic.

Well if that’s true, then you’re double fucked with plastic. Plus, with cheap bottled water? It TASTES like plastic. Plastic sucks.

• • • Squeezing the sided of a plastic bottle won’t help at all in maintaining any fizz. Once you crack the cap, CO2 evaporates out until the bottle reaches sufficient pressure to stop that (assuming you re-capped the bottle) or until there’s no more CO2 to escape (which is why your squeezed bottles never expand back to full shape–there’s not enough CO2 in them to allow that).

Uh, yeah there is. The volume of CO[sub]2[/sub] is several times the size of the bottle. You can prove this experimentally (and I have!) Drink part of a large bottle of soda, trying to preserve the carbonation. Squeeze it before resealing and after you seal it, shake vigorously. The bottle will quite handily reinflate.
