Shutting off my main water valve will cause my hot water heater to fail?

My mothers house is 100 miles away. I working on her estate since she died in October. There is a very easy wat to shut off the water to the house. And I just do that.

Someone is there though weekly, either myself or my brother.

My own house is on a well. When my wife and I go on vacation, I just turn off the power to the well. Sure shit could go wrong, but we would only get the water from the pressure tank as a flood.

And oddly, I also turn off the water to my house because we live remote. It would be VERY easy to break in. No way to prevent that. But if the water is off, intruders won’t stay.

With the main shut off and a hot water valve left open the tank will not drain. The outlet is on the top of the tank. The only ways the tank can drain are a leak in the tank, a leak with the drain valve open or a to open the drain valve. So, it does not matter where the tank is.

Now if your tank is somehow only has a small amount of water and your TP valve is capped off, that can be a completely different story.
