Thongs vs. nudity or "What's the deal with naughty bits?"

Regarding the sex/violence dichotomy, every person on the planet wants to have sex. How many people want to burn someone at the stake?

As far as barely covered vs naked, I prefer the latter in theory but the former in execution. My favorite part of Playboy is the celebrity pictorials. But they are almost always disappointing. Bad boob jobs with walleyed nipples is a real fantasy killer. (Damn you, Brooke Burke!) And an overly artistic layout isn’t titillating at all. (Terri Polo comes to mind, as does Charisma Carpenter.)

But give me a picture of Jessica Biel in nothing but panties, covering her breasts with her hands? I might have it laminated…

I just remembered the absolute best is the see-through or unintentional nudity. Playboy’s back pages are photos of this nature, where you see the famous slips. (Janet Jackson at the Superbowl, Tara Reid at that birthday bash, Jessica Simpson at an unfortunate angle exposing her hoohah, Kerry’s daughter caught in the flashbulbs, etc…) That section alone is worth the price of subscription.

One of the hottest pictures I’ve ever seen was in that section but contained no nudity at all. Jessica Alba at the beach in a regular (not a thong) yellow bikini, arching her back, shot from behind. Oh my! I would not have found it anywhere near as compelling if she were nude. (I likely would have thought, hmmm, I suddenly have a craving for a roast beef sandwich.)

Well, I haven’t been to a beach in the US or Europe, not being American or European. And I haven’t spent any time checking out the women’s undies or bathing suit sections anywhere. I would hear the term ‘thong’ but had no frame of reference for it.

Clearly, you need to spend more time checking out women’s undies and bathing suits.

Have you listened to hate radio lately? I mean, Ann Coulter would DEFINITELY like to burn someone at the stake, and she’s got LOTS of fans!

I think wannabe A list actresses find pubs like FHM and Maxim extremely useful because they allow them to show some skin and get “hottie” status, without going “all the way” and getting “slut” status. Plus, it’s a great way to promote movies. Doesn’t always work, though. Maxim went head-over-heels for “Coyote Ugly” when it came out, and that film went nowhere despite all the appearances of scantily dressed babes from the film (which featured no scantily dressed babes).

Now, here’s the deal. I can’t speak for women’s reaction to men’s naughty bits, but I gotta tell you … women’s naughty bits aren’t the incredibly arresting visual thing you might suppose they are, based on all the effort that is put into concealing them. It’s not that they aren’t nice looking – they are. But measured against the sheer poetry of a beautifully curved pair of female hips or a wonderfully rounded pair of breasts, or a powerfully expressive pair of eyes, nipples and vaginal lips don’t stand a chance.

Wow, that makes one of us. Gimme a nipple and I will lose all sense of the world around me. To each his own I guess, but I’m guessing that if you polled the men of the world this opinion would be in the minority. I’m sure there’s a generational component here but from the ages of 10 - 35 I’m doubting you’ll get a landslide of agreement.

Hot is hot, and there’s something to be said for the relative fame of the object in question, but all things being equal I’ll take topless over bikini clad.

After checking, I stand corrected. In my defense, that section is black & white, but it sorta looked like yellow looks in B&W pictures. And I remember her in a yellow bikini on that stupid Cameron Diaz MTV travel show. (At least I think it was yellow.)

But yeah, the June 2005 issue with Bai Ling on the cover. (She was on the Revenge of the Sith’s cutting room floor.)

I’ve no doubt most folks would take topless over bikini clad. I would, too. I just don’t think that, objectively speaking, there’s a whole lotta difference between a woman in a string thong and a woman wearing absolutely nothing. The increased interest most people have in total nudity is mostly a result of the taboo factor. It’s entirely artificial, in short.
