Inspired by Dagny's tiara thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=116035) , what the heck is it about Australian crystals?

Judith Lieber (http://www.vivelavie.com/viva/fashion/liebler.htm) , purse designer extrordinaire, uses Australian crystals as does just about everbody else. Why?

It's Austrian Crystals. Thye're man made crystals, frequently Swarovski crystals, and I imagine they're so special because being manmade, they're flawless (& cheap).

As to why they're called Austrian Crystals, rather than manmade crystals or just Swarovski or whoever first patented the process, I have no idea, sorry.

here's one link - http://www.rainbowenterprises.com/FAQ.htm#austrian

If you put +why "austrian crystals" into google, you'll get tons of hits, but many of them are just jewellery sites with no info.

Actually Fierra, it's not Austrian crystals (though there are Austrian crystals). It's Australian...unless 30,000 websites are wrong.

Also, I checked out Swarovski's site before I posted this question and while they were started in Austria over 100 years ago, they have locations all over the world (including Oz). They're Swarovski. Like Rolex is a watch.

So, anybody else got anything on why Australian (or Austrian too, what the hell!) crystals are the GAPs of crystaldom?

Upon reading your link, Sue the purse designer seems to be talking about rhinestones, which we'd generally interpret here to mean a synthetic, sparkly thing, not a naturally occuring crystal.

AFAIK, we don't have any advantage on the rest of the world when it comes to producing synthetic stones (it's the simple age and geological nature of some of our deposits of precious and semi-precious gems which gives them their clarity and their sought after status). You can buy naturally occuring crystals here extremely cheaply (with the exception of the huge thunder-eggs), sothis just sounds like we've done an excellent job on hyping the local product.
