I was talking with a coworker today, and we happened to hear David Ball's "Private Malone" (country song) on my radio in the background.

He turns to me and says, "Did you hear, they're making a movie from that song?"

"What? No I didn't. Where'd you hear that from?"

He says, "Oh, the movie grapevine I picked up somewhere. . ."

Granted, it's a great song. But is what he said true? I checked IMDB.com, but didn't find anything. . .

If you haven't heard the song, you really oughta. It's kind of a tearjerker. . .

But, anyway, are they filming a movie around it?

Oh I hope they do make a movie (I always thought it would make a good movie, if they did it right).

How in the world WOULD they make that a movie? The entire plot is contained in a three-minute song; I doubt anyone could coherently flesh it out into an hour-long TV special, much less a three-hour movie.

I haven't heard anything about it, not even in Country Weekly. If that song were headed towards film, that lame excuse for a magazine would be all over, especially with so much potential for flag-waving.

It's one of my favorite songs - I just don't want to see it turned into another "patriotic-yay-USA-lovefest" movie. David Ball has a lot of talent, I wish more people recognized it.

/ends moping about the sad state of country music

Actually, my coworker described it as the life of Private Malone before he was killed in Vietnam. You know, growin' up, joining, fighting, getting killed. . .

At least that's what he said. . . Maybe not so flag-waving as we would want to believe with the OP Iraqi Freedom thing, but something to touch the Vietnam era?

An interesting idea even if false, but hell, if it did come to fruition, I'd see it.

But I agree: David Ball doesn't get enough attention or credit.
