View Full Version : Who's seen City of Men?

A few months ago I was led to this documentary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455949/) on the slums of Rio de Janeiro through a Netflix recommendation, which in turn led me to the City of Men series on DVD (which is a drama, but with a tinge of that cinema verité feel about it).

I must say I am fascinated by the subject of this series (the favela, or slums), in that charming "it's-like-a-traffic-accident-oh-my-God-yet-I-can't-look-away!" way. There is such an overbearing atmosphere of desolation and hopelessness in this place, and yet the filmmakers (I know it's actually a TV series, but what do you call them? TV-showmakers?) manage to tell a story, that's simple, primal, and relatable through these children protagonists. I've just finished watching the first disc and I'm growing rather fond of the series.

Anyone have any thoughts on it?
