View Full Version : Your favorite songs that start with J, K, Q, X, or Z

12-01-2008, 11:40 PM
I'm in charge of the stereo whenever I'm in the car with my best friend, so I make 26 song mixes that use one song from each letter of the alphabet while following a theme, like musicals, angry girl music, weird boy music (Neil Cicierega, Jonathan Coulton, the like), or rock in general. It's an easy way to sort songs, and is just predictable enough to be a dependable source of car music.

I used to try to keep every song new from mix to mix. I've found that I can't. I've only got 7 songs that start with Q, 4 that start with X, and 5 that start with Z*. Even with about 57 songs that start with J and 47 that start with K, those letters are problematic too. We've listened to the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' cover of Jolene about a bajillion times, not to mention the Mitch Hedberg track "X"- which isn't even a song, but is much better than Xanadu, one of the other options, and less irritating to other passengers, which the Xena theme can be.

So- do you know any really great songs, preferably with lyrics in English (French, German, and Japanese could be fun too)? If they're available free online legally, that's extra great, but I'm willing to buy anything that starts with a Q or an X.

*Six if you count "Zed's Dead, Baby [Skit]/Bullwinkle, Pt. 2," but I don't.

Judas Kiss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpZ5pIkV2Js) byt the Del Lords is one of my favorite songs ever.

From the album, A Date With Elvis, I recommend the Cramps, Kizmiaz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cJo9uthjEk)

The B-52's were a fun party band back in the day, and Quiche Lorraine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16R1U1h6nNg) was a party staple.

Can't think of anything off the top of my head for X,
but try

Zero my hero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPE_xB0HIbw) from schoolhouse rock.

I could also suggest The Toll, Jonathan Toledo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf_1Rd5Ujhw)

If you need more, I will scan my memory for 80's MTV hits.

Wow, thanks!

feppytweed- I should have already thought of Jesse's Girl- it was playing today in the scene shop, and everyone was singing along.

Silver Tyger Girl- I've already got Jerry Springer, Killer Queen, and Ziggy Stardust on mixes, and King of Suede on my computer, but everyone I know likes Rammstein and the rest of the list sounds great too!

chicken wire?- Zombie Eaters is such a totally awesome name that I will use it one day no matter how it sounds. Also, ooo, a Beck song that starts with Q. I haven't gotten a Beck album since I was 16 or so (okay, so that was only 4 years ago, but whatver) and I don't have that song, but I was thinking of buying more Beck soon.

Lucky 13- Your K list looks especially nice- not that's there anything wrong with the Js!

Everyone else who posted between me starting this and me hitting post- Thanks so much! I didn't expect such an overwhelming response.

Eh, as others said, there's a lot of J and K titles and I could probably name at least a dozen for each that I love just off the top of my head, so I'm just going to stick with Q, X, and Z. Also, I'll try to do it off the top of my head.

A Question of Heaven - Iced Earth: In fact, this is just plain one of my favorite songs by them
Quetzalcoatl - Therion: Pretty much everything by this band rocks
The Quiet Offspring - Green Carnation: Not their best work, but still good
The Quest for Equilibrium - Gorguts: Sweet...

Can't think of any X songs off the top of my head. So I guess I don't have any favorites.

Zero - Dark Suns: Well, it's the only Z song I could think of off the top of my head. Not a particularly great song in and of itself since it's mostly ambient and talking, but it sets the mood for one of my favorite albums. So that counts.

I want to thank everyone who gave me suggestions, and also, in case anyone else is ever in this mighty fine predicament, add one more Z song to the lists:

Zydrate Anatomy from Repo! The Genetic Opera

Que Sera, Sera - Doris Day I think he's like this song as done by Pink Martini (http://www.amazon.com/Sympathique-Pink-Martini/dp/B000005IQ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1228596920&sr=1-1) way better. Very beautiful and haunting.

On my 'K' list is Kiss from a Rose, by Seal.

And on the other end of the spectrum, for your 'Js', you could try Jacques Derrida (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:hxfixqqald0e), by Scritti Politi (Reviews of the album and song, here (http://www.amazon.com/Songs-Remember-Scritti-Politti/dp/B00005Q62O/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1228597441&sr=8-4)).

I've got lots of duplicates that are already noted, but on my nightly playlist at work are:

Joy - Apollo 100
Judas' Death - Jesus Christ Superstar Original Studio Cast
Kalamazoo to Timbuktu - Chenille Sisters
Keep Yourself Alive - Queen
Quartet (A Model of Decorum and Tranquility) - Chess Original Studio Cast

I suppose we could throw Xanadu in there but I'll never admit to having it on my playlist.

Last, but not least, Zoot Suit Riot - Cherry Poppin' Daddies, but it's currently unchecked because I had to pare down my playlist on my ancient 2G iPod nano.
