HeyHomie

Movie buffs love to talk about which movie has the best kiss, or the best death scene, or the best farewell scene, or whatever.

In this thread, let's talk about the best scene in obscure categories that you make up on the spot. For example, you may say the Best Fake Orgasm Scene is the classic from When Harry Met Sally. Or, the Best Taking a Shit Scene is in Dumb and Dumber. Get it? I'll start:

Best Prayer Scene [Tongue in Cheek]: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. "Dear Sweet Lord Baby Jesus..."

Best Prayer Scene [Earnest]: Glory, where the black soldiers are having a no-holds-barred prayer meeting the night before going into battle.

Best scene of the White House getting destroyed: 2012.

I know, I know - ID4 is more recognizable and has the iconic image thing going from the commercials. And 2012 sucks in a way the more enjoyable (but still silly) ID4 doesn't.

But the WH in 2012 wasn't just destroyed by a big wave or a meteor strike or terrorists or invading aliens - it was hit by an aircraft carrier.

I salute any man with balls big enough to put such a preposterous shot in their movie.

Best western gunfight scene: Ha! Too many to choose from. I'll nominate Silverado.

Surely it must be the three way gunfight between, Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The build up and tension as the three antagonist stare at each other waiting for someone to draw. And then suddenly "POW". It's over in a second. I love that scene.

Best no gravity scene: Opening credits of Barbarella. Jane Fonda was hot back then.

The best first introduction to your Daddy: Star Wars Empire Strikes Back. "Luke, I'm your Daddy".

Best hanging on the cross scene: Monty Python's, The Life of Brian. "Always look on the bright side of life!" Whistle....

I'll cop to being unfamiliar with House of Games. What's so great about the card game in it? It'll have to be pretty good to top "The Sting" though.

I don't know if I can explain it. The cinematography? The script? The acting? The acting is a little stiff, which isn't surprising as it's adapted from a stage play.

The basic plot is that a best-selling psychologist is trying to help one of her patients with his gambling addiction. He's in huge debt and about to get his knees broken. She goes to the House of Games to convince the debtee to tear up the debtor's marker. He agrees if she'll help him cheat at a card game. The card game itself is really tense.

And it has Linsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna.

For Best Courtroom Scene, I'm kind of partial to Al Pacino in ... And Justice for All. At the end, when he's screaming in court about how his client really is guilty and they have to drag him out still screaming:

Arthur Kirkland: That man is guilty! That man, there, that man is a slime! he is a *slime*! If he's allowed to go free, then something really wrong is goin' on here!
Judge Rayford: Mr. Kirkland you are out of order!
Arthur Kirkland: You're out of order! You're out of order! The whole trial is out of order! They're out of order! That man, that sick, crazy, depraved man, raped and beat that woman there, and he'd like to do it again! He *told* me so! It's just a show! It's a show! It's "Let's Make A Deal"! "Let's Make A Deal"! Hey Frank, you wanna "Make A Deal"? I got an insane judge who likes to beat the shit out of women! Whaddya wanna gimme Frank, 3 weeks probation?
Frank Bowers: *Dammit!*
Arthur Kirkland: [to Judge Fleming] You, you sonofabitch, you! You're supposed to *stand* for somethin'! You're supposed to protect people! But instead you rape and murder them!
[dragged out of court by bailiffs]
Arthur Kirkland: You killed McCullough! You killed him! Hold it! Hold it! I just completed my opening statement!

Best arrival-in-the-nick-of-time scene:
Sam saving Frodo from becoming spider food in Return of the King.

I disagree

Ripley ariving in a powerloader suit ( qualified with a class II license so the QHSE department was happy)

Both had a similar " back off dude ' cos i'm through with this crap" line.

Best kissing your sister scene : Star Wars. With a repeat in Empire.

My pick for best Western Gunfight Dual is the one between Indio and Mortimer in For A Few Dollars More. The scene is crisp, clean and raw, stripped of the production values we expect today. The tinkling watch chime combined with Ennio Morricone's haunting music score makes this one of the high water marks of the genre.

I haven't seen The Player, but it's tough to beat Touch of Evil in this category.
The category of best uninterrupted shot is one that is dear to my heart. I will agree that the top two are probably Touch of Evil and The Player (in that order IMHO). Larry McConkey's incredible steadicam from Goodfellas (http://www.steadishots.org/shots_detail.cfm?shotID=2) is also amazing.
Another Steadicam shot which blows my mind comes from a movie I've never seen (http://www.steadishots.org/shots_detail.cfm?shotID=58). The amount of choreography required to pull off the shot- hard to believe. Most fights are shot hand-held with a cut every two seconds, but here is a multi-story fight in a four minute uninterrupted take. Totally worth checking out.
Finally, in a slightly more reality based vane, Claude LeLouch's incredible 1976 film C'etait un Rendezvous (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COyab3YQS48) still gives me chills every time I see it. Watch and be amazed!!

Joe Don Baker in "Walking Tall" (to the question: "Where's your search warrant?"): "I keep it in my shoe" (kicks door in).

Best name for a guy you wouldn't want to make fun of it for: "Buford Pusser."

Watch and be amazed!!I can't find a cite on IMDB, but I'm pretty sure that the square dance scene in Cat Ballou was shot as one uninterrupted shot, but had cut-aways to the hayloft added in editing because the producer felt a single shot was too distracting. I think it was mentioned in the audio commentary track, if you have access to the DVD.
