I've asked Star Wars experts (nerds?) about this before and got a deer in head lights look.
I'm hoping there is the ultimate combo of Star Wars fans and people with esoteric knowledge here.

Has anyone read Siddhartha by Herman Hesse? In it he encounters a group of monks who can influence others thoughts. There is something close to the "these aren't the droids" moment.

I know Lucas asked Joseph Campbell for help, is it likely he got that idea from this book or did Joseph Campbell give him the idea after reading the book?

Also the mythology of the Dalai Lama includes a story about previous Dalai Lamas speaking to their deceased masters who appeared as faces in the sky. Connection or coincidence?

I certainly don't remember that in Siddhartha. But I am weak-minded.
