While I didn't agree with the winner, Season 1 of King of the Nerds as surprisingly well done. I expected the worst and ended up enjoying it. Season 2 begins tonight at 10 on TBS.

I don't know anything about this season but season 1 was pretty well casted. Let's hope this one is too,

Very good news. Was just talking to the wife about this the other day and we were hoping it would come back.

I figured people may not realize it was coming back so I wanted to start a thread before it aired.

I'm working my way through Season 1, and am looking forward to watching this one. Especially when I spotted the female Third Doctor cosplayer (and she does a great job with it, too! You don't see too many Rule 34 Threes). I'll be rooting for her unless she turns out to be a total twit like Alana in season 1.

One of mine, too! I'm unreasonably excited about this show as a result.

I'm just hoping they keep the quaintness and earnestness of the first season. I'd really hate to see this get "Real World" or "Real Housewives" treatment, with manufactured drama and people overreacting for the sake of screen time.

The first season was definitely a "reality show". It hit all the beats those shows do but the casting was really good. I liked almost all of the people at least to some degree. I also liked that the creators seemed to be nerds themselves. But it is tricky. It is very easy for it to all go wrong.

Good luck to those with friends who are involved! That is pretty amazing there are at least two here.

I liked most people (ok, everyone except Alana) at first, but couldn't stand most of them by the end of the show. Especially Genevieve.

I hope the people are better at the challenges, too - they did quite poorly, I thought, at most of them. Maybe it was just a bad case of nerves, but you even had people screwing up at their supposed specialties - comic book nerds getting easy comic book questions wrong, engineers getting the engineering challenge wrong, etc.

I didn't warm to this cast as fast as the first season's but I am happy they are real Nerds and not Central Casting's version of Nerd.

Won't spoil the episode but I'll just say I did feel bad for the loser.

I did notice last year's cast made a cameo so I expect some of them (Certainly last year's winner at least) will show up before this season is over.

I'm really happy. They kept the same "flavor" from last season. I quite enjoyed it.

Two things:

1. My absolute happiest "real-nerd" moment was all the stuff that happened in the background. The nerds COULD NOT STOP playing with the assorted swords in the room :). The fantasy-centered geeks, mainly, were in constant contact with them, and the japanimation folks were playing with the mondo-cleave weaponry. That is the hallmark of true geekdom.

2. What the hell was wrong with the broom riders?!? They had six bottles, and they werent' pulling and throwing them all! Are they THAT bloody stupid? Japanophile chick only tried ONE on the first two runs! Jeez! That just about killed me.

I enjoyed it. No overt twits this time (although some of the twits from last season took a while to show their true colors, so we'll see).

I really wanted to try that Quidditch game! And I loved the TARDIS! I want a TARDIS in my house. Hell, I want to go live in Nerdvana!

I think my favorite line of the night was when one of the guys described himself as a "Swiss-Army nerd." :)

What kind of accent did the girl who went home (I forget her name) have? Her voice sounded so bizarre.

It was slightly midwestern, but she was a down-talker, so her voice sounded.. odd. She also had funny intonation on some words.

She also threw left handed on one run and right handed on the other. Definitely not the athletic type

I have to disagree with Quimby and Infovore regarding the cast - to me it feels just as bad as last season's in terms of being horrendously cliche. Seems like we're in for another season where 90% of the players lack basic social skills. So far the only ones I think I'd be able to stand in person are Chris and Xander. But there's obviously still a lot of room to see how things shake out. I'm sure some people will end up flipping out and others will end up cooler than my first impression.

It really did. And she was the one (I think) who said she was training to be a teacher of English as a second language...and all I could think was "Grand, she'll be teaching other people to sound like THAT."

I looked up her bio. She's from Georgia so I couldn't help but wonder if her multilingualism affected her accent.

The thing is the Nerds form Season one and a lesser extant from Season 2 remind me a people I know, that's why they seemed like good casting. They could have gone with LA Reality Show Central casting with just a sheen of "LOL I'm Such a Nurd" but they didn't do that. Sure they went for people that they hope make for good TV but it could have been worse. I expected the worst when the show was first airing ads to the point where I avoided the first episode when it first aired. But I caught it later because reviews were good and I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm expecting the guys whose only skill seems to be Pokemon to go pretty quickly. He's plenty nerdy, but that specialty is so specific, and he said he's no good at math or science, that I can't see him lasting long.

A lot of drama in last night's episode, which I didn't mind because nerd drama is kind of adorable in a way that usual reality drama isn't.

Hated the way it turned out but should make things interesting at least.

I'm still not sure why Chemist Girl was so set on hiding she's a Chemist. I mean who cares?

Also it's official, Mary Kate is kind of cute.

Totally agree. This is a show that values knowledge and usefulness - NOT saying you are a chemist is a stupid thing!

My vote is going for Kayla. I like her style and philosophy. However, since they have her doing narration, I think her time might be short.

The guy who dropped the ring should have been voted off. He blew the presentation.

Zach, however, shows all the signs of improper socialization. The moment things went wrong for him, he turned on his teammates. Its all or nothing for that guy.

And has anyone found whats-his-name's youtube channel?

Totally disagree.

If Zach had a modicum of social skills\wasn't brain dead her actions would have made perfect sense. By teaming with someone with the creative skill set they would have complemented each other and he could have prevented other people on their team from voting against each other and thus negating the weakness of not revealing her strength in Math and Science to the rest of her own team.

On the other hand by the other team not knowing her strengths she becomes MUCH less of a target and has a better chance of not being picked by the other team.

Not really, I'm pretty sure they still would have lost. Regardless, Zach did close to jack shit to help in the first place.

I just wish he would stop shouting "For the Forsaken!" all the time. You're not your WoW character, dude.

It also seems somewhat clear to me that purple-haired chick (Katie?) also has some emotional weaknesses given how quickly she lost it and ran off to go cry when Kayla was being disagreeable during the team challenge in Episode 2. It can be hard to tell from the edit, but I didn't think Kayla was being that argumentative at all, so flipping out that quickly is a bad sign. Luckily, the purple team has been pretty stable so far, so it hasn't been an issue.

I think I'm going to call this season officially a Sophomore Slump. Still watching but this cast is just not as engaging as Season One's. Also Zach alternates between being sad and scary.

I liked this Nerd-off. It was interesting and challenging and weird. And Zach to be growing, at least a bit, as a real human. The giant robot was awesome!

I liked the robot and the zombie game, but I think I'm done with the show. The thing I was hoping to see never materialized, and now it seems it never will.

In the promo ads, they showed Nicole in her full Third Doctor regalia, and I was looking forward to seeing what they did with that (I had hopes it would show up during the cosplay challenge). But now that Nicole is eliminated, unless they somehow bring her back I don't think I'm gonna get to see it. Disappointed.

Also, is it just me or is the format for this show reeaaally slow? I mean, this kind of stuff is right up my alley since I'm a big ol' nerd, but it seems like things take forever to happen and most of the attempts at "drama" just fall flat.

I think it only feels that way because this is a less interesting and likable cast than last year.

No comments for this week's show? I watched it because it was on and "Elementary" was a rerun, but it pretty much did nothing for me. If I watch it at all from now on, it'll just be out of force of habit.

This group runs from utterly uncharismatic to painfully anti-charismatic (that would be Zach. Every time he yells "Victory for Sylvanus!" I cringe...and I play World of Warcraft!)

Anyway, it seems that

We can't get rid of Zach...again. He wasn't even in the Nerd-off this week. Every week we lose another one that I would have liked to keep, and keep the boring, the annoying, and the generally uninteresting.

The girl with the purple hair (whose name I've already forgotten) was one of the few who actually had a little spark.

I think these debates need to be scored differently. By scoring each one separately and in advance they almost have to split the first two because otherwise they would skip the third one. They should just do all three and announce a winner at the end.

By the way, as much as I love Star Wars (and I really love Star Wars), the Star Trek Universe is better.

Chris was acting extra douche-y so I am kind of glad he's gone. I did forget to mention lats week that I cannot believe there is such a thing as a nerd who has never seen Star Trek nor Star Wars...at all or even knows anything about either. I mean, really?

Quimby
03-14-2014, 07:10 AM
I guess people bailed on this season but I liked how they did the finale this year better than last year. Even they knew a popularity contest was a mistake. What I found most surprising...

were the two finalists were types of Nerds I didn't know existed. You had a Nerd who knew nothing about Star Wars or Star Trek or any pop culture really and a Nerd whose favorite Star Trek was Voyager.

I liked how they brought back the entire cast and let them all have at least one more night at Nerdvana. It is a lot of fun watching Nerds Nerd out. I was more satisfied with this winner as well, although, like Celeste last year, she basically did the under the radar game (and it helped that she was on a team that almost never lost).

I was not as happy with this cast as last year's but it was still better than a show called King of the Nerds has any right to be. I hope they get a chance at a Season 3.

Finally got around to catching the finale. I'm glad they did an actual challenge at the end instead of a popularity contest - that works for Survivor (because of how the game is played) but not for this.

On the trivia contest... wow, a question about Her Majesty's Dragon? Didn't think I'd ever see that... (the books are kinda boring, if anyone asks). Not surprised that Jack got lucky on a few.

I admit I thought Jack would win the final contest, as he did seem to be able to quickly adapt to a wide variety of tasks despite his lack of knowledge of most nerd pop culture (seriously, how do you not know anything about Trek or Wars?) But it looked like he made inefficient use of his helpers and spent too much time on the math puzzle despite needing to know pop culture for that one.

I'm not upset Kayla won (the only person I would've not wanted to win was Zack, to be honest) but she's not that impressive. Anyone who is a Captain Janeway worshipper has questionable choice (have you watched Voyager? She's a terrible captain!) Or, as my father put it, "How the hell can she be the winner, she can't even play freaking Pac-Man!"
