Well, I'll give the obvious (wrong) answer:

Clerks. (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0109445)

But then IMDB tells us of Mae Day (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0210164)

What do you have?

A character named "Silent Bob" first appeared in films in the 1917 flick Her Soul's Inspiration. Though it's not the Silent Bob of Kevin Smith fame, obviously. The flick's directed by Jack Conway, and Edward Hearn plays Silent Bob.

That's the one. Seems unlikely to be a coincidence.
I'm thinking the actor (or his agent) must have been a film major.

Say, silent_rob, seeing your name reminds me- Have you heard from SILENT-BOB lately? Or was he banned. Seems he hasn't posted for 10 months. Maybe he's too busy making movies. ;)

the actor was the director and writer so I'm thinking he knows about film.

Of course, he doesn't speak, so it makes sense to call him Silent. Bob is a common name.
