Hi, Neighbor! 07-11-2018 04:02 PM

Being the last poster of a thread and then it dies

Have you ever stumbled upon a thread that was like five pages long with lots of recent activity, then you decide to chime in, and then the thread just dies? And you think, "Uh, was it something I said?" And no one speaks in the thread ever again.

Doesn't that leave you with a weird feeling? It does to me.

Anyways, just wanted to share this. It's happened to me and I always wondered what everyone else thought about that. Or if it's something people think about at all.

Deep down it makes me feel sad. Like, I didn't do enough to keep things going. Oh well.

*sighs*

burpo the wonder mutt 07-11-2018 04:15 PM

Doesn't bother me; usually the conversation has run its course by the time I get there (an hour or two later), so I just make a comment of some sort and move on. Some perverse part of me enjoys it: "Look, Martha, I've killed another one!" Then I stamp the side of my computer--like WWII fighter planes in some old flick--and see what other mischief I can get into.

mikecurtis 07-11-2018 04:21 PM

Dammit burpo, if no one answered this thread it would've really blown her mind!

Beckdawrek 07-11-2018 04:25 PM

Ah, well. I have chimed in now. It can die.:)

naita 07-11-2018 04:53 PM

I think someone should come up with a term for people who kills threads just by posting to them. Maybe "Thread killer"?[/deadpan]

PastTense 07-11-2018 04:58 PM

OP: you have the wrong attitude. Instead realize that your post was the definitive statement that no one could possibly disagree with.

Newtosite 07-11-2018 05:21 PM

I'm guilty of killing several threads.

Hari Seldon 07-11-2018 05:22 PM

I'll try to kill this one. Do not reply.

I have killed thousands of threads with a single word.

:D

IT WAS YOU!?!?

Yeah, I kinda get the same feeling, like I am a johnny-come-lately to the party. I dread having my username be the last one appearing in the Forum view for that thread. It will be there forever.

I like to think that its because my post was so profound, no further posts are necessary.

cochrane 07-11-2018 07:44 PM

Until I come along.

erysichthon 07-11-2018 07:57 PM

This has happened to me quite a bit. I think it's because I don't spend a lot of time here (not as much as some of you, anyway), and by the time I notice a thread it has usually run its course.

Gee, I hope somebody adds a post after this one.

Not only unable to disagree with, but your point was made so perfectly that it needed no further comment or explanation. :)

Colibri 07-11-2018 11:07 PM

Back in the early days of the board, a term was actually coined for this.

Molosters = MOst Last pOSTERS

It originated in Post #7 of Thread killers

mikecurtis 07-11-2018 11:14 PM

once again proof that there is either an MB thread or a SD column about everything!

SlackerInc 07-11-2018 11:34 PM

Ha, I couldn’t swear this has happened to me but I feel like it probably has.

Grrr! 07-12-2018 03:45 AM

I don't take it personally, I do get disappointed sometimes though.

Mainly because, if I'm jumping in late to a thread, it's because I have a point to make that hasn't already been brought up. Which is rare when the thread is more than two pages long.

Lucas Jackson 07-12-2018 08:53 AM

Iíve killed my fair share and, yes, it bothers me a bit.

I think this thread will be interesting in that it will probably never die and thus will offset the OPís angst.

Well I want in then. It will be nice to contribute to a thread and not see my name in the Last Post column the rest of the day. (There's one there now.)

Fundisi 07-12-2018 09:21 AM

Maybe it'll die if this unknown lurker posts in the thread...

Cardigan 07-12-2018 09:29 AM

The only time it bothers me is when it's a thread that I started...and I'm the only poster.

Just Asking Questions 07-12-2018 11:21 AM

A similar but somehow even more depressing case is when I kill a thread, but it seems it was only "mostly dead". Someone two weeks later comes along and revives it, which is bad enough, but then they ignore my last post! And then it gets new life, but no one discusses my comment.

Yeah, I've learned not to post new threads late at night when no one is around to see them.

Fear the Turtle 07-12-2018 12:25 PM

This seems to happen to me quite a bit, so I went into my CP and did some poking around (as a (mostly) lurker this wasn't too daunting of a task). I had about 580 subscribed threads - meaning I posted in them - and I counted 40 where I had the last post (about 7%). My "favorite" was a thread asking about Motherboard advice - I was first and last as nobody responded (learned my lesson about posting after work on a Friday).

Quimby 07-12-2018 01:52 PM

I have done this enough that I also have considered starting a thread about it. When it happens I end up saying to myself, "I AM THREAD KILLER!" like a Spartan warrior.

manson1972 07-12-2018 02:12 PM

Last!

(sorry Quimby)

Another old thread - this one from 2004 - on the subject, with lots of statistics.

Personally memorable in that it revealed that I was one of the most effective threadkillers of that era.

It looks like I may have killed this thread about abortion - I wasn't the last post, but I appear to have struck the killing blow. My feelings on the matter are mixed - I don't like to see a debate I'm in die, but if it has to die it's best that it ends with me doing a mike drop.

AskNott 07-13-2018 04:30 PM

Often, I don't even dive into a thread with 4 or 5 pages, because whatever I hoped to add was already done by somebody else. There are exceptions, if I'm really interested in it, or it looks amusing.

Ruken 07-13-2018 08:08 PM

I usually completely forget I've posted in a thread after I post.

I'm sure I've killed threads, I just haven't noticed.

This seems to happen to me a lot, so I did some data mining just now. Looking at all non-Sticky threads from GQ, GD, Elections, Cafe Society, Game Room, IMHO, Mundane, and Pit which were last bumped between June 16 and June 30, Dopers with five or more kills are:
9 by ftg
9 by Chronos
8 by Elendil's Heir
7 by Leo Bloom
6 by Nava
6 by MrDibble
6 by DSYoungEsq
6 by Beckdawrek
5 by lingyi
5 by Telemark
5 by Northern Piper
5 by Colibri
I was pleased to note that I had only 3 kills during that interval. The list is of course unfair to Mods who are credited with a Kill when they close a thread.

Serenata67 07-16-2018 10:58 AM

I feel like this happens to me a lot. Maybe I'm not the LAST one, but I'll say something I think is relevant or witty, and there's only one or two more comments... nada...

The WHO just added gaming addiction to their disease list. Also sex addiction. While they're at it, how about THREAD KILLING ANXIETY DISORDER.

I predict this will be the longest running thread in the history of the Dope as people keep trying to make the 'last' post. :D

My friends,

We are gathered here today to pay final respects to our honored thread. But it should be noted that this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new thread; a thread that our beloved comrade gave its life to protect and nourish. It did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate its profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of this thread, I can only say this: of all the threads I have encountered in my travels, this was the most…thready.

Cherry with a slice of old cheddar melty on top or Key Lime for me; or maybe my personal creation, mudbottom pecan pie wherein you layer the bottom of the pie shell with melted dark chocolate with a pinch of chili powder and then pour the ooey gooey goodness of the pecan filling.

Gatopescado 07-28-2018 01:48 AM

All I need to do is pop in and mention the dogs. That always seems to bring an end to things.

So, that dirty bastard Doxie got a Kangaroo rat this afternoon, and would not give it up! Ate about half before I caught him, pried his jaws open and pulled that filthy thing out and took it away.

So, high alert for dog vomit tonight.

Beckdawrek 07-28-2018 02:19 AM

Can I interest you in Kangaroo pie?

Gatopescado 07-28-2018 02:35 AM

You cannot. Already got one, don't ya know.

Doctor Jackson 07-30-2018 10:52 AM

OK, now we're just having fun. At this point it reminds me of one of those contests where whomever keeps their hands on the car longest wins.

Only in this case there is nothing to win.

Gatopescado 07-30-2018 11:30 AM

But nothing to lose!

Jasmine 07-30-2018 11:33 AM

Yes, I have. The obvious reason is that my thoughts were so concise, penetrating, and all encompassing that there simply wasn't another single thing for anyone to add.

Keep on and it will be a zombie.

burpo the wonder mutt 07-31-2018 09:19 PM

Beckdawrek 07-31-2018 09:22 PM

Thread?

(It lives!!)

burpo the wonder mutt 07-31-2018 09:23 PM

What took you so long?

Beckdawrek 07-31-2018 10:41 PM

I wanted the thread to die. But, NOOOOO! It lived, again.

running coach 07-31-2018 10:44 PM

Maybe what's needed is a fighting dragon to sear this thread from the board.

betterlifethroughchemistry 08-01-2018 12:51 AM

You don't think that would cause this thread to just drag on?

Enola Gay 08-01-2018 12:57 AM

I once saw a transvestite getting his drag on.

Doctor Jackson 08-01-2018 12:56 PM

Drag on
Drag off
Smoke billows
I cough.

Thread lives,
Can't die
The reason?
Tis I.

This post will kill this thread once and for all (at least for the night).

swampspruce 08-02-2018 09:54 AM

Thus a new day dawns and the sheer bloodyminded stubbornness of You People has resurrected this thread, much like the humble hummingbird after a cold night in torpor at the higher mountain altitudes. Come Atropos and finish this task that Cruel Clotho (aka Hi, Neighbor!) has spun!

burpo the wonder mutt 08-02-2018 10:57 AM

Hummingbirds are vicious little bastards; one of them threatened me, to my face, to move along away from his feeder.

You know, they hum the first six notes of "Aqualung."

Oh, I know it! I've been verbally castigated by two different species, a Rufous and a Ruby-Throated, and although I don't speak the language I suspect they were both casting doubt on my virility, parentage, appearance and intelligence. Not necessarily in that order.

Beckdawrek 08-02-2018 02:07 PM

Inigo Montoya 08-02-2018 04:17 PM

Enola Gay 08-02-2018 04:29 PM

No.

Beckdawrek 08-02-2018 04:40 PM

I don't.

Hi, Neighbor! 08-02-2018 05:23 PM

Ok, so back on topic. I think being the last poster on a previously active thread is the equivalent of being at a party and approaching a group of people already engaged in conversation. You walk up to them, because maybe you've had too much to drink, but you know for a fact you can offer some insightful input. You dispense said input, everyone kind of stares at each other, then one by one they branch off - "I should call my wife, it's been 15 minutes." Then the other guy, "Hmm, I wonder what the scores are to the team I follow," and the girl is like, "Let me go check in on my friend in the kitchen." And suddenly you're there by yourself. All alone again. You start to question why you're at the party. You start to question why you even try any more. You start to question your very existence.

Beckdawrek 08-02-2018 07:16 PM

I would let you have the last post. That's just sad.

Sort of like the mirror image of what's happening here--where you are pretty clear in expressing what sort of thread you'd like to have, but everyone else is doing something different?

I concede that math is hard, but you'd think that a guy whose user name refers to a single-digit number could count to, well, that number.

running coach 08-09-2018 11:24 PM

It's not the end of the line yet.

TokyoBayer 08-10-2018 12:30 AM

Several of us did this about six to eight years ago. I think that the thread was eventually closed by a mod, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, I'm glad that people are more mature now and that no one would bump a thread simply for childish games!

eschereal 08-10-2018 01:04 AM

A mod could move it to Thread Games, whereupon such bumping would be entirely appropriate. However, once it was reclassified as a game, everyone would lose interest. A few posts after this one will be the post six years from now that lifts this thread out of being consigned to the depths of the sdmb servers.
