Actors/actresses you think are the same person

Until I looked them up on IMDB, I had no idea that John Corbett and Paul Rudd were different people. I thought that the guy in Clueless was the guy on Sex and the City was the guy on Friends was the guy in My Big Fat Greek Wedding...and so on.

My roommate had a similar issue with Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett.

What other actors/actresses (and I guess musicians, too) did you think were the same person until you learned otherwise?

silenus 08-24-2005 08:08 PM

Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman are really the same person.

Mr. Blue Sky 08-24-2005 08:12 PM

Charles Durning & Brian Dennehy

Bryan Ekers 08-24-2005 08:19 PM

I intitially thought the daughter in Traffic was Julia Stiles. Turns out it was Erika Christensen, and many people have confused the two.

Dark Side of the Floyd 08-24-2005 08:20 PM

Tommy Lee and Tommy Lee Jones. Jerry Lewis and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Morbo 08-24-2005 08:27 PM

Julie Warner and Maura Tierney.

I also saw Dragonslayer recently and I could've sworn the girl was Maura Tierney. Nope - Caitlin Clarke. Tell me she didn't look just like Maura Tierney in that movie.

Hal Briston 08-24-2005 08:34 PM

Helen Hunt and that other actress who looks a lot like Helen Hunt.

Leelee Sobieski looks like a young Helen Hunt.

We used to joke that Skeet Ulrich was "the poor man's Johnny Depp."

pinkfreud 08-24-2005 08:39 PM

The first time I saw Leelee Sobieski, I thought she was Helen Hunt. I am still struck by the resemblance.

Another uncanny likeness is shared by Jeff Bezos and Kevin Spacey.

I thought Julia Stiles was Kate Hudson.

[QUOTE]Tommy Lee and Tommy Lee Jones. Jerry Lewis and Jerry Lee Lewis.{/QUOTE]

That would be Tommy Lee Lewis.

Otto 08-24-2005 09:09 PM

Julia Roberts and Monica Potter. They even sound alike.

And Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry" was a dead ringer for Matt Damon.

Biffy the Elephant Shrew 08-24-2005 10:05 PM

Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi from Babylon 5) is also known as Bruce Willis. Definitely the same guy.

I saw Jerry Doyle at a science fiction convention once. He joked about his resemblance to Bruce Willis. He said he was expecting that some day he'd run into Demi Moore at a darkened bar, and sparks would fly.

Little Nemo 08-24-2005 10:29 PM

I was just checking out at the supermarket and I was wondering why they used Brittany Murphy as the cover model on this month's Cosmopolitan but didn't mention her name on the cover. Then I saw they did mention Scarlett Johanson's name and realized I had mistaken who it was.

Here's the picture.

For that matter, I consider the Bruce Willis character in The Fifth Element to be essentially Garibaldi in a different job.

Now I think Scarlett is way prettier than Brittany Murphy, but YMMV.

Kat 08-24-2005 11:50 PM

Heather Thomas and Heather Locklear.

I agree. So why would she want to be made up to look like Brittany Murphy?

mrunlucky 08-25-2005 12:18 AM

I had this problem recently with Shane Brolly and Billy Crudup.

I was watching Coffee and Cigarettes recently and because I was refusing to believe Cate Blanchett was playing both roles in her segment, I had convinced myself that Sarah Wynter was playing the role of the actress, and Cate was playing the role of the dark-haired cousin.

I continue to have that Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton problem, and I'm glad I'm not alone in that.

Robot Arm 08-25-2005 12:51 AM

Dennis Quaid and David Keith.

edwino 08-25-2005 12:52 AM

For the life of me, I cannot keep Matt Damon and Jude Law straight. I know they look nothing alike, but it was The Talented Mr. Ripley and it was downhill from there. To add insult to injury, that movie had both Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow in it, another two who I switch up.

In fact, the whole blond actor thing throws me for a loop. All those white guys -- Ethan Hawke (GATTACA with Jude Law), Ewan McGregor, Rick Schroeder, Johnathan Rhys-Meyers (Velvet Goldmine with Ewan McGregor) -- look the same to me. If they are in a movie, I can clearly identify them. But ask me a week later who played what role, I always get confused.

uglybeech 08-25-2005 01:02 AM

Elias Koteas and Christopher Meloni were separated at birth I'm pretty sure.

And supposedly Jake Weber is not Tim Roth (I'd still like to see a DNA test though).

TellMeI'mNotCrazy 08-25-2005 03:53 AM

Not necessarily because they look alike, but more because my brain seems to have assigned them to the same exact locations, so I can never remember which one I'm talking about:

Gary Busey and Nick Nolte
Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman
Leslie Ann Warren and Susan Sarandon

Dominic West and Matthew Glave - so much so that I was absolutely certain that Matthew Glave (Glenn Gulia from the Wedding Singer) had played two roles in "Rock Star" - that of Chris' brother and that of Kurt Cuddy. Struck me as bizarre until I watched the credits and realized it was two different people.

seosamh 08-25-2005 04:36 AM

Daryl Hannah and Lori Singer.

Whoa—I thought that was Gwen Stefani.

Anyway...Tom Waits and Ron Perlman. I know, everyone thinks that. But still...needed mentionin'.

Wendell Wagner 08-25-2005 07:42 AM

Karen Allen, Brooke Adams, and Margot Kidder.

bouv 08-25-2005 07:57 AM

I'm probably the only person to never get Bill Paxton and Bill Pulman confused. Why? Cause I HATE Bill Paxton. He is a crappy actor and is only in crappy movies (did you see Twister?)

Bill Pulman in LONESTAR! So that makes it easy. I mean, they don't look anything alike, just have similar names.

Bill Pullman wasn't in _Lone Star_.

I know who Chris Rock is. I've seen him here and there. A few years ago I heard someone mention a guy named "Kid Rock." For at least two years, I was just assuming these were the same person. Any reference I heard to Kid Rock (and granted, there weren't that many), my mental image was of Chris Rock. :smack:

Plynck 08-25-2005 08:20 AM

Jack Noseworthy and Lee Evans

Draelin 08-25-2005 08:25 AM

It took me a while to figure out that Ashley Judd and Charlize Theron were two different women.

I recently bought the complete series of Undeclared on DVD and discovered that Charlie Hunnam is almost indistinguishable from Heath Ledger's early roles.

And then there's the triple-play of Renee Zellweger, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jewel.

astorian 08-25-2005 08:32 AM

For ages and ages, I could never remember if I'd seen Lee Marvin in a movie role, or James Coburn. I'd talk about Lee Marvin's role in "The Magnificent Seven" or "The Great Escape," then catch myself thinking, "Wait... that was Coburn,m wasn't it."

JerH 08-25-2005 08:51 AM

I can't tell Jessica Campbell from Jena Malone - not that Jessica's been in much, but the few times I've seen her I've thought she was Jena.

But Bill Pullman played a character named Lone Star in Spaceballs. :)

Corporate Hippie 08-25-2005 09:11 AM

Someone already mentioned them, but these two might as well be the same person in my mind: Nick Nolte & Gary Busey

sciurophobic 08-25-2005 09:31 AM

I saw a preview of Pride and Prejudice and thought it starred Natalie Portman. It was Keira Knightley. I consider this an acceptable mistake, as Keira played one of the fake Amidalas in The Phantom Menace

Only Mostly Dead 08-25-2005 09:56 AM

Darn. I came in with two (Helen Hunt/Leelee Sobieski and Julia Roberts/Monica Potter), and both were already covered.

I'll second (third?) that for the longest time, until I paid attention to the credits, I thought it was Susan Sarandon reunited with Tim Curry in Clue, not Leslie Ann Warren.

tripthicket 08-25-2005 10:10 AM

My contribution: Frances O'Connor, who looks like a young Barbara Hershey.

Bippy the Beardless 08-25-2005 10:38 AM

Here is BigGirl's ealier thread

I'd like to add Malcolm McDowell and Michael York allways confuse me, despite having very different hair.

TellMeI'mNotCrazy 08-25-2005 10:52 AM

Carmine Giovinazzo http://members.aol.com/remiped/csiny-carmine02.jpg

Greg Kinnear http://www.nndb.com/people/137/00002...near-sized.jpg

They could be twins.

I agree with Joey Lauren Adams/Renee Zellwegger and Charles Durning/Brian Dennehy (I actually wrote "Brian Durning" there!)

Also --

Brian Blessed and John Rhys-Davies

Allison Janney and Ileana Douglas

Vicki Lewis and Kathy Griffin

Dennis Quaid and Jeff Bridges

Stockard Channing and Elizabeth Perkins (despite the fact that I recently saw them together in the same movie)

Matt Damon and Brad Pitt

Fran Drescher and Maggie Wheeler

Laura Linney and Julianne Moore

Laura Linney and Helen Hunt

Laura Linney and Heather Graham

kidchameleon 08-25-2005 11:42 AM

I always get David Keith and Keith David confused when trying to remember the actor's name.

And Ewen McGreggor looks a lot like a young Malcom McDowell(or is it Roddy McDowell  :D )

Ol'Gaffer 08-25-2005 11:49 AM

Michael Madsen and Tom Sizemore.

Ol'Gaffer 08-25-2005 11:52 AM

I thought of another pair...

Fred Thompson and Joe Don Baker.

wolf_meister 08-25-2005 11:57 AM

I confuse Bill Pullman and Jeff Daniels.

And since I'm really OLD, there were 3 character actors (way back when) who were very similar-looking (in my opinion) Skip Homeier, Keith Andes and Richard Webb. Any fans of the original "Star Trek" series will know them because they made at least one episode each. (Skip Homeier made two).

And also from those days of yesteryear, James Whitmore looked a lot like Spencer Tracy don't you thnk?

Oddly enough, it was exactly this combination I was thinking of when I said Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton. It's Pullman and Daniels that I can never keep straight in my mind...
