Stats on 99er dopers

A recent banning of a 99er got me thinking.

How many 99ers were there ever?

How many are still active?

How many were banned? Maybe s brief breakdown of vague reasons (no need to name names)

And finally,
How many...gulp...have died?

Just curious.

MikeG 01-15-2018 11:55 PM

I’m not dead!

DSYoungEsq 01-15-2018 11:57 PM

Still here.

Joey P 01-16-2018 12:10 AM

Also still here. And don't forget, many (most) of us are actually pre-'99. A lot of the the '99ers came over from AOL.

blue infinity 01-16-2018 01:47 AM

User 3853 was the last to register in 1999.

Sampling every 100th user number: 3 out of 38 were active as of 2017, 1 banned and 1 completely disappeared.

That extrapolates to around 300 active users, and 100-200 banned.

About half of those sampled never posted after 2000 and only made <10 posts.

Bosda Di'Chi of Tricor 01-16-2018 06:04 AM

Undead, yet haunting this unholy place.

WWwOOoooOooo.....

DrFidelius 01-16-2018 08:06 AM

Not participating as much as I did in my youth but still here.

(And, apparently, that was my 12,001st post. Woot. )

Morgenstern 01-16-2018 08:23 AM

Relics from the last century.

Earl Snake-Hips Tucker 01-16-2018 09:34 AM

Going down the 'In Memoriam' list in MPSIMS, these are the 99ers that have been identified has deceased.

Dirty Devil
Persephone
Padeye
*FixedBack
Toymaker
Aseymayo
Ayesha
ChiefScott
Gail
OpalCat
PolyCarp
Lynn Bodoni
VogueVixen
aenea

*FixedBack was an AOLer, and posted on Opal's board, but he doesn't appear to have registered here.

Sparky812 01-16-2018 10:36 AM

In the end... there can only be one!

ftg 01-16-2018 11:26 AM

3853 dopers enter, one doper leaves. It's Thunderdope!

kunilou 01-16-2018 11:33 AM

Still here. There are four centenarians in my family (just the ones I've met face to face) and I ain't goin' nowhere.

1) Too many names I recognize and miss
2) A very few that are a mystery to me
3) Hi Opal !!!!!

:(

Seems like the board can be a bit of a minefield at times, where EVERY Doper has some continual non-zero risk of getting banned sooner or later. One mis-step is often enough to do it, and the board is littered with their corpses to prove it. You only get banned once and it's forever.

I couldn't disagree more.

Len was stubborn, he hung around on the AOL forum even after it was officially closed, somebody found a workaround and part of it was still available for years until AOL finally killed off that server. Used to hear from him from time to time. I thought he did register here but I don't remember the screen name, it was prior to his back surgery.

Looking at these names brings back a lot of memories. A lot can happen in 20+ years.

Earl Snake-Hips Tucker 01-16-2018 03:46 PM

Also poster Carl Berry, whose name is not listed in the 'In Memoriam' thread. Another deceased 99er.

Ellen Cherry 01-16-2018 04:07 PM

Reports of my death have been exaggerated.

Gatopescado 01-16-2018 04:33 PM

Is there a tontine?

Except for all of us, and it wasn't, but that's probably just a one-time deal.

I think I am still alive. Although I have to ask: Do you see dead people? If so, are we in The Good Place, or The Bad Place?

Is there 99er dueling? Is a tournament ladder posted somewhere?

Backwater Under_Duck 01-16-2018 07:41 PM

I hate this. I've been here for a long time. Long before we registered. What's a 99er? Sometimes I don't pay attention. Pretty sure I was here in the 90s. But as an official old guy, once it's past a year or so, it could just as easily been twenty years. Memory time-warp.

kayT 01-16-2018 07:45 PM

Threads like this always make me start singing "still crazy after all these years."

Someone who's join year on SMDB is 1999, the first year the database that runs the site goes back to. If you were on AOL before but didn't join this board until 2004, you're not a 99'er. At least that's my interpretation, but I joined in 2000 so what do I know?

Backwater Under_Duck 01-16-2018 08:10 PM

Oh yeah. I know that one. I still like the tontine idea.

Revtim 01-16-2018 08:21 PM

I'm still around, don't visit here as much anymore though.

Registered the same exact day as me, as a matter of fact. And a day after Qadgop.

DSYoungEsq 01-16-2018 09:39 PM

The old AOL days are a distant memory in my fuzzy, addle-pated, age-dessicated brain. :(

But those WERE good days.

Doctor Jackson 01-17-2018 09:17 AM

49ers got the gold, 99ers just got mold.

Chronos 01-17-2018 10:01 AM

Hey, Morganstern, I'm a relic from the last century, too, but does anyone ever give us aughters any respect?

1. It's very difficult to get banned for ''one mis-step.'' There is generally a steady progression from notes (which are not tracked), to warnings (which are tracked), to suspensions, to bannings. The more established a poster is here, the more leniency they tend to get. Banning of established posters in the vast majority of cases is considered a last resort. There will always be exceptions to everything so I'm speaking very broadly, but there's no need for people to be quaking in their boots about the inevitability of the banhammer.

2. TPTB do consider appeals from banned posters for another chance. It's not up to moderators, but it's possible to be banned and return later to the board in the case of a successful appeal. The odds of reinstatement are not high, but it has happened at least a handful of times.

Lumpy 01-17-2018 10:58 AM

Still alive, by some definitions of the word.

Did any deceased Dopers post official "goodbye" messages?

Chronos 01-17-2018 11:05 AM

As another point against the "inevitability of eventual banning", most posters just lose interest and wander off long before they get banned. Open up any old thread with a lot of replies, and yes, you'll see a few banned among them... but you'll see a lot more that just haven't been around lately.

Yeah, those few 99ers who are still around are pretty strongly selected against those who'd be inclined to ever wander off, but even they will still eventually stop posting, even without being banned. Eventually, they're going to die, if nothing else, and eventually, this board itself is going to shut down (perhaps when Ed dies). If it weren't for the impossibility of deciding the question, I'd wager that, by that time, the majority of the currently-active 99ers would still not be banned.

There are posters who've been around as long or longer than I, who (like me) have never even received a warning, and are FAR more obnoxious than I am.

Proud '99er here. No clue what day I registered- how does one discover this? My info on posts indicates October, 1999.

I was on the AOL boards before SDMB.

Attended a few wonderful interesting Dopefests back in the day....

Our community. Which I still enjoy, and believe in.

And yeah, Opal dammit. :(

If they are currently active, they are not banned by definition. :p

10/20/99. It's on your profile page.

Exapno Mapcase 01-17-2018 01:54 PM

I was a lurker in 99 and kept putting off joining because I thought it would be too much of a time sink.

Man, sometimes I hate when I'm right.

I finally gave in in 2001. Not 2002 as the stamp says. All my early posts and evidence of membership got wiped out in the winter of missed content. How many others of us are shivering out there in the cold, victims of post count circumcision?

Waaaaay back in the day, I guinea-pigged for Tuba and let her (successfully) (attempt to) reset my postcount to zero. Turned out to be a thing admins could do. I feel proud of having done my part, but it was strictly voluntary.

nightshadea 01-17-2018 03:17 PM

wow I left for about a decade but most all the names listed above as deceased I remember vividly

I might be. I could have sworn I joined earlier. I was on the AOL site but mainly to read the articles since I was a fan of the books. I check out the board from time to time but I wasnít a regular poster by any stretch. I lost track of it when it moved off of AOL and didnít wander back for a few years.

They are not banned currently. Some of the folks who are active now will eventually be banned. But not most of them.

Nonetheless, I feel confident that, 100 years from now, none of them will be posting.
