Fantasy football general discussion 2019

Hereís a thread for discussing fantasy football and also please use this thread to recruit owners for any SDMB or non SDMB league.

Iím in a 12 team full point PPR $50 money league. We can keep 3 with no restrictions or draft penalties.

1. Nick Chubb
2. Keenan Allen
3. David Johnson
4. Devonta Freeman

Which 3 of the 4 would you keep? Thereís questions about both Freeman and Johnson, of course. Even if I keep 3 rbs, we do have a flex and I can always use one of the RBs as trade bait.

Hamlet 08-23-2019 11:44 AM

Clearly Chubb and Johnson are keepers, both have top 12 ADP and pretty clearly THE RB on their respective teams, so the question is Keenan Allen or Devonta Freeman. Last I checked, Keenan Allen is apparently back at practice, so his injury status shouldn't be a problem. And I think Devonta's Freeman's days as a bellcow are done (Ito Smith looked good this preseason and they've now used a 4th or 5th round draft pick on a RB in each of the last 3 years), so I'd be likely to go Keenan Allen, especially in a PPR. I think his upside is much better than Freeman's, although Freeman would likely have more trade/flex value if he does get the volume he did in the past.

If you think you can get your hands on a guy like Chris Carson, Damien Williams, Marlon Mack, Mark Ingram, Sony Michel, or other guys from that 3rd-4th tier of rb's, I'd definitely go with Allen. If RB's are at that much of a premium in your league and those kinds of guys are all already kept and you don't think you can get Josh Jacobs (or David Montgomery if you like him) in the draft, them maybe Freeman is the play. But in a PPR (Allen had 97 catches last year), I'd go with Allen.

My question: I have a chance to keep Zeke Elliott for a first round draft pick in a 8 team league. Should I? He's got incredible value as the uncontested, heavy volume RB, but things are not going well for his holdout. I don't doubt he'll return (he gains nothing if he holds out the whole season, because he won't get any closer to free agency), but he could, in theory, wait until after week 10 to do so. Which could be a killer in this league. I could keep him and draft Tony Pollard way higher than I would normally, but missing out on your first round draft pick for even a few weeks can be catastrophic. As they say, you can't win your draft in the first round, but you can lose it.

So do I do it? Keep Zeke?

If anyone is looking for teams, I just found out my league drafts Sunday and I’ll will in Jamaica. Looking for a late drafting league!

I'm curious about this as well. We draft Wed 8/28 night and I have the 4th pick (1st actual pick as Barkley/Kamara/McCaffrey were all kept and count as draft picks). I have to decide between Zeke and DeAndre Hopkins (12 Team PPR) in 24 hours.

I agree that Freeman is probably the one you can spare from that group.

After what LeíVeon Bell did Iíd be wary about a RB whoís holding out. I doubt Elliot will hold out too long, but I never thought Bell would hold out an entire season either. So I would be careful there.

If anyone is looking for fantasy football leagues, we need one player for the all pro league (going superflex this year) and several for the big league. Both are auction drafts. The all-pro league drafts tomorrow night at 8 eastern, and the Big League drafts next Wednesday, the 4th, at 8 eastern.

Both leagues are well established and been around for a long time and have a good level of activity and competition. If you've never been in a very big league (we aim for 20 players) it's pretty unique as the talent is much thinner. You have more options/difficult decisions with draft strategy and you can really shine by finding deep sleepers and value players.

If you're interested in either, PM me an address to invite you at, or post in either of the league threads.

Aggregate rankings are collated using the "everyone plays everyone" philosophy. If you had the 3rd highest point total in a league of 12, that means you finished ahead of 9 people and behind 2 for a record of 9-2 in that league for that week. Aggregate rankings add all your EvE scores for all the SDMB leagues you participate in.

People in only one league (like me) are not included in these rankings.

To clarify, the Leagues column in the first table and the Coach column in the second table are both unrelated to their respective tables. Both columns could be in both tables and their data wouldn't change. I put one in each table instead of both in both tables to conserve horizontal space.

SenorBeef 09-14-2019 02:48 PM

I like that data a lot.

The idea is actually growing on me to try an everyone-vs-everyone league.

The thing about h2h is that it just adds random noise to the whole process. Very often the best team (best drafted, best managed, highest scoring) doesn't win the championship, and sometimes even misses the playoffs, because they got unlucky with head to head - they happened to catch other people having their best week while they had a below average week, or whatever. Head to head is just something that makes the better team lose more often.

But on the other hand, people really like having a weekly goal, a clear win or loss, a way to focus their rooting and feel like they've accomplished something on a weekly basis, so points leagues are generally regarded as boring, even though they're straight to the point without the matchup randomness.

But I wonder if everyone-vs-everyone could potentially be a middle ground people might enjoy. It gives some degree of weight to weekly results - you can have good weeks or bad weeks, and to some degree you're winning or losing against other teams in any given week - but it ultimately ends up being much more fair and much less random - not as pure as a points league, but the fact that you're playing against everyone every week and the large sample size smooths out the randomness of it it's far more likely the best teams will rise to the top.

Yahoo doesn't support such a thing and I doubt we'd ever get people to switch from yahoo in sufficient numbers, so it's not likely that we'll ever implement that as the official/primary scoring method. But using the program you wrote, we could still know what the results would've been. It could kind of be a secondary way of measuring success, just like now you can end up looking at the point totals at the end of the year and deciding if that matters to you.

Is your app able to track everyone-vs-everyone for individual leagues? I suspect it already does as an intermediate step before it combines them for a cross-league score. If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could store the results for each league's everyone-vs-everyone separately so we could periodically update that for each league and see how each league would've turned out in an EvE scenario?

I saw that a lot the last time I played fantasy. I too love the idea of everyone vs everyone each week. Iíd love to see how such a league would work.

Iíve always wondered about playing fantasy football with something like roto scoring in baseball. While weekly head to head matchups are fun in football, thereís a certain pleasure in winning a roto baseball league as well.

Ellis Dee 09-15-2019 03:06 AM

Yeah, I like the EvE records for all the reasons you give, and would be happy to add it to the weekly data. I haven't looked at that code since I wrote it in 2010, but it's already calculating EvE totals now for this thread so I'm thinking copy & paste and done. (Famous last words.)

Four rows of tables seems like a lot, though, so I'd probably just remove the coach grades. Coach grades are just for fun anyway; you can calculate it from the first two tables easily enough. I could remove the Actual Points row, but I like having that as verifiable with yahoo totals that the program is working correctly. (Not that I ever verify them.)

I'm thinking the Actual EvE and Potential EvE in side-by-side tables, both being your season total records. Your weekly EvE is readily available from the first two rows of tables and so is not needed. Like all other tables, you also get little green and red numbers showing your change from the previous week. (I love those.)

Really Not All That Bright 09-16-2019 11:39 AM

This seemed a bit too mild for the Pit, and a bit too sporty for minirants: the new NFL.com fantasy app is fucking terrible. There is literally no way to see if there is an update for one of your players except for clicking each player to bring up their profile. Every fantasy app/interface, including NFL.com until this year, has had some sort of icon to indicate news and breaking news. How fucking hard would it have been to keep the existing notifications?

Hmph.

Ellis Dee 09-16-2019 12:06 PM

That would annoy me to no end, RNATB. Yahoo for life.

I think I'm going to transpose the actual / potential and week / season tables to put all actual on the left and all potential on the right:

Week Scores: Actual, Potential
Season Total: Actual, Potential
EvE Records: Actual, Potential (season totals)

If I leave the top two rows alone I think it will be extra confusing. That would be:

Actual: Week, Season
Potential: Week, Season
EvE: Actual, Potential (season totals)

Ellis Dee 09-16-2019 05:19 PM

I set it up so I can re-arrange any of the individual tables at will, including the coaching grades if you want them back in. Here's what it looks like now, using Week 5 of the Dynasty league last year:

Am I an idiot to avoid Russell Wilson tonight? I try not to start guys on Thursday night games except for D/St and kickers. Thursday night games tend to be low scoring slop fests. I think I’m going with Dak Prescott instead.

His numbers have been mostly good in each game (though more modest last week) and the Rams have a depleted secondary. The Hawks tend to run more in easy games to eat up the clock (as they did last week) and throw more in tough games to get more points (as they did in their other 3 games this year). Given the combination of a Rams team that might be tough overall but vulnerable against the pass (especially tight ends like TD monster Will Dissly) this might be a good game to use Wilson.

Really Not All That Bright 10-03-2019 03:09 PM

He threw six TDs against the Rams last year.

Atamasama 10-03-2019 08:27 PM

That’s 2 from Wilson so far.
