I searched Wiktionary for various meanings of rag and found this:

rag ‎(plural rags)
A coarse kind of rock, somewhat cellular in texture; ragstone.

rag ‎(third-person singular simple present rags, present participle ragging, simple past and past participle ragged)
To break (ore) into lumps for sorting.
To cut or dress roughly, as a grindstone.
Seems likely to me the guy worked down mine.
