I once read that the dress swords of Marine officers and noncoms are now made of stainless steel, which is too brittle to be of any use in combat (not that anyone would use a sword in combat, against an enemy who has rifles. In WWII, the Japanese attached bayonets to light machine guns, which were too unwieldy to use as thrusting weapons, but that was because of the sword-based samurai heritage of their military culture).
