People often say this kind of thing about 'just politics', and I don't really understand it. American politics has included things like outright slavery and genocide, and today includes things like concentration camps and stripping human rights from people. Why should no one be bothered by the trail of tears or holding kids in cages just because someone votes for it instead of participating themselves? Yeah, Thomas Jefferson had a quote about how people should put politics aside, but he wasn't the one who was going to be whipped, forced to work in a field, watch his wife be raped, and get sold south to never see his family again, and I don't think he would have actually been non-vitriolic if the politics of the day included a vote for 'do we whip Jefferson today'.
