Sandy Bridge Chipset problem

Sandy Bridge is a code name for a chipset that is on the intel i3, i5 and i7 processors. Back in the beginning of the year they had problems with it and did a recall.

Does anyone know if this is still a problem with new computers shipped? What if the machine was actually made months ago? And, well have they fixed it.

Thanks
(asking for my mom)

IIRC the problem was with SATA 3 ports (interface to hard drives) which could become faulty over time. This was identified in January and all newer boards have a redesigned chipset which should not experience this problem.

no, the issue was fixed in the B3 revision of the chipset which has been shipping for months. The pre-B3 revisions were recalled and should have all been sent back to Intel.

ETA: Intel has a utility you can download and run to see if you have an affected version.

ETA again: sorry, that only works on Intel branded motherboards. Sorry...

Thanks both of you. Look like the issue has been cleared up.
