The complete 180 of the Republican party on nearly every issue makes it difficult to avoid the conclusion that the entire platform of the party for the past several decades was a complete lie.

Or maybe, just maybe, they don't give a shit about anything and it's all about power for power's sake and making as much money as possible before they have to run.

I'm saying that what Russia is doing to our political system - our entire government - is in many ways much worse than that. They're embedding themselves within the structure of the political system, and they're in many cases operating out in the open, and when they're not, they're simply exploiting the system's loopholes and lax enforcement.

They've used our court rulings, gerrymandering, dark money, and capitalist oligarchy itself against us. They understand that, in America, money is "speech". They understand that the gerrymander has created districts that give disproportionate power to a political party. They use dark money, soft money, and nativist activism to gain influence. And they use ill-gotten (stolen) wealth to corrupt individuals. Moreover, they've used information warfare to sow divisions along cultural lines, misinform the electorate, and poison confidence that our political system works.

We can't just chalk all of this up to a simple hack job; they've exploited the flaws in the system that give Republicans disproportionate power. They are embedding themselves into the system, normalizing themselves as regular political agents. And the Republicans won't defend us against this attack because it's power that Republicans want - the power to control the public so that they can't fight back against the elite class.

Yes, it's pretty much this - it's about power. The Republicans want private power to dominate the power of institutions that represent the public interest. The Russians are using a wide open front door into our political system. There are mutual interests involved: Republicans want to crush 'socialism' and agencies that operate in the public trust, and the Russians know a thing or two about how to go about that process. A match made in hell.

I'll concede that former FBI attorney Lisa Page probably doesn't say this entirely without bias, but she's probably not the only employee or ex employee who views the DoJ as having abandoned its principles by virtue of getting sucked into the vortex of conspiracy theory politics:

https://www.thedailybeast.com/lisa-p...y-crime-at-all

Quote:
“It’s very painful to see to places like the FBI and the Department of Justice that represent so much of what is excellent about this country, not fulfilling the critical obligation that they have to speak truth to power,” she tells me. “The thing about the FBI that is so extraordinary is that it is made up of a group of men and women whose every instinct is to run toward the fight. It’s in the fiber of everybody there. It’s the lifeblood. So it’s particularly devastating to be betrayed by an organization I still care about so deeply. And it’s crushing to see the noble Justice Department, my Justice Department, the place I grew up in, feel like it’s abandoned its principles of truth and independence.”
In essence, what she's saying is that, at minimum, Trump's administration and the GOP have already seriously undermined the mission within the Department - and Page's experience predates the arrival of Bill Barr, who has only accelerated the politicization of the DoJ. You know, it's initially the people at the top who get pushed out the way by an authoritarian, but in this sort of highly toxic environment, the only ones who can thrive and survive, are the ones who believe they have something to gain from him personally - and that's what I've been getting at here these past few years.

The whistle blowers who appeared at the impeachment hearings over a week ago were great - just what the country needed. But now their careers are pretty much over, and they've become publicly vilified by about half the country, and probably another 10-15 percent probably don't even give a damn about them one way or the other. And in the end, probably nothing will happen to Trump. They know it. And more importantly, so do hundreds or thousands of other civil servants who have observed corruption up close.

This is how a government like that in Russia operates. It's understood that crime pays, and that snitches get stitches - or worse. They're just trying to export their type of system here.

Nah, the white supremacy was always for real.

Everything else was pretty much rationalizations, though.

I'm not positive these are Republicans, but apparently a bunch of folks have picked up on a photo from 1898 that they claim shows Greta Thundberg panning for gold in the Yukon. Obviously, she's a time traveler.

Uh-huh.

Ordinarily, when a television news program invites a member of Congress on to discuss public affairs, the host asks the questions and the lawmaker tries to answer them. On CNN last night, that dynamic was reversed a bit, as Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) started asking questions, which host Chris Cuomo seemed eager to answer.

At issue was the Republican Party’s ongoing support for a Russian-backed conspiracy theory that Ukraine was responsible for the attack on U.S. elections in 2016. In context, this exchange followed Cuomo’s explanation that GOP officials keep echoing a Kremlin disinformation message intended to undermine U.S. interests.

WEBER: Chris, was CrowdStrike involved in the DCCC hacking?

CUOMO: Yes.

WEBER: Is CrowdStrike in part owned by a Ukrainian?

CUOMO: No.

WEBER: Really?

CUOMO: Yes.

WEBER: That’s not the information that we have.

CUOMO: You have bad information.

It’s a problem that Republicans are peddling crackpot conspiracy theories. It’s a problem that Republicans are echoing a message concocted by the Kremlin to help Russia and hurt us.

That all seems pretty tongue in cheek to me. I mean, if I saw that photo with a Twitter poll asking if Greta is a time traveler with potential answers "Obviously" and "Are you joking?" I would have clicked "Obviously" too.

So what if she is a time traveler. Does that make her wrong? Probably stopped off in the Yukon to pick up some off the record specie that's spendable in our time.

If anything I would think it would improve her credibility. It may be that she is so passionate about preventing horrors that climate change will inflict on our planet over the next century, because she's the end result first hand.

Rick Wiles's Tru News are at pains to point out that Jerry Nadler, the three constitutional scholars who testified before the House Intel Committee today, and the Democratic counsel Norman Eisen are Jews, and labeled it a "Jew coup". This is a "news" site that regularly gets White House press credentials.

Florida Republican: ‘We should hang’ treasonous Democrats
Quote:
George Buck, one of six Republican primary candidates for Florida’s 13th Congressional District, referred to several Democrats but in particular to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota. Omar was born in Somalia and came to the U.S. as a child.

In the recent letter to potential donors, he said that “we should hang” Omar and other “traitors” for “abusing our system to destroy our country.” He mentioned “tinfoil hat accusations” against President Donald Trump, but didn’t elaborate.

Buck’s letter cited an unverified story that Omar is an asset of a foreign government who passed information to another foreign government. Omar has denied the report, calling it ”outlandishly absurd” in a statement.

“For all their false, tinfoil-hat accusations of President Trump, the Democrats have foreign assets among their most outspoken leadership!” the letter read. “We should hang these traitors where they stand. I have no tolerance for those who are abusing our system to destroy our country.”
There has been pushback:
Quote:
Buck previously had been on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program, which mentors and supports candidates in races across the country. Chris Pack, the committee’s communications director, said in an email Wednesday that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy decided to remove Buck from the program with the support of NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer.

Todd Jennings, chairman of Republicans in Pinellas County, linked via Facebook to a Tampa Bay Times report on the letter, and wrote: “There is no room for this kind of rhetoric in either political party. No one should ever condone a candidate’s call for violence.”
Buck followed up by showed everyone what kind of person he really is:
Quote:
Buck did not respond to an email sent via his website or to a telephone message. Buck initially told the Times he didn’t write the email, though it was signed by him. “I would never talk like that,” he said.

In a follow-up statement, Buck appeared to stand by the campaign’s email. “Anyone who commits treason against the United States should be tried to the full extent of the law,” Buck said, adding that death is a possible punishment for treason. He declined to elaborate.
Did y'all catch it? I love it: "should be tried to the full extent of the law." That'll show 'em!

House Republicans want Senate Republicans to subpoena Adam Schiff's phone, individual 1 wants Pelosi and the Bidens and Schiff called to testify during the impeachment hearing. The Senate Republicans are saying, yeah, probably not.

Much in the same way they were "spying on Trump" because he kept turning up when they had their cameras pointed at (other) suspected criminals.

Devin "Deer In The Headlights" Nunes claims that he can't remember talking to Parnas on the phone. Parnas' lawyer is here to help him out:
"Parnas' personal lawyer was not convinced by Nunes' Fox News appearance yesterday. Responding to his interview with the network, Bondy tweeted: "Hey @DevinNunes—Lev remembers what you spoke about. You don't remember? #LetLevSpeak". ..."

Who is more credible? Devin Nunes or Lev Parnas? Which is the more pleasant odor, a pot of sewer soup or a dead armadillo?

What, what? #LetLevSpeak ?? Is somebody stopping Lev from speaking? Did Trump order him not to speak? Nunes keeping him quiet? Who's he taking orders from anyway? If he's not called to testify, can't he just talk to a reporter? Is his lawyer telling him to keep quiet, even as he uses the #LetLevSpeak hashtag?

I for one thought he was behind bars. Didn't he and the other guy get arrested just prior to attempting to leave the country?

That is correct. According to this CNBC article

Quote:
Parnas’ lawyer Joseph Bondy requested that the court loosen Parnas’ tight bail conditions.

Parnas is currently under house arrest and wearing a GPS monitoring device.

Bondy requested he be allowed outside a few hours each day for a few days a week to exercise, spend time with his children and get fresh air.

Prosecutors strongly objected to that proposal.

The House Ethics Committee has told Duncan Hunter that he can no longer vote in the House, after pleading guilty.
