Actors/actresses you think are the same person

Until I looked them up on IMDB, I had no idea that John Corbett and Paul Rudd were different people. I thought that the guy in Clueless was the guy on Sex and the City was the guy on Friends was the guy in My Big Fat Greek Wedding...and so on.

My roommate had a similar issue with Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett.

What other actors/actresses (and I guess musicians, too) did you think were the same person until you learned otherwise?

I intitially thought the daughter in Traffic was Julia Stiles. Turns out it was Erika Christensen, and many people have confused the two.

Julie Warner and Maura Tierney.

I also saw Dragonslayer recently and I could've sworn the girl was Maura Tierney. Nope - Caitlin Clarke. Tell me she didn't look just like Maura Tierney in that movie.

Leelee Sobieski looks like a young Helen Hunt.

We used to joke that Skeet Ulrich was "the poor man's Johnny Depp."

The first time I saw Leelee Sobieski, I thought she was Helen Hunt. I am still struck by the resemblance.

Another uncanny likeness is shared by Jeff Bezos and Kevin Spacey.

Julia Roberts and Monica Potter. They even sound alike.

And Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry" was a dead ringer for Matt Damon.

Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi from Babylon 5) is also known as Bruce Willis. Definitely the same guy.

I saw Jerry Doyle at a science fiction convention once. He joked about his resemblance to Bruce Willis. He said he was expecting that some day he'd run into Demi Moore at a darkened bar, and sparks would fly.

I was just checking out at the supermarket and I was wondering why they used Brittany Murphy as the cover model on this month's Cosmopolitan but didn't mention her name on the cover. Then I saw they did mention Scarlett Johanson's name and realized I had mistaken who it was.

Here's the picture.

For that matter, I consider the Bruce Willis character in The Fifth Element to be essentially Garibaldi in a different job.

Now I think Scarlett is way prettier than Brittany Murphy, but YMMV.

I had this problem recently with Shane Brolly and Billy Crudup.

I was watching Coffee and Cigarettes recently and because I was refusing to believe Cate Blanchett was playing both roles in her segment, I had convinced myself that Sarah Wynter was playing the role of the actress, and Cate was playing the role of the dark-haired cousin.

I continue to have that Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton problem, and I'm glad I'm not alone in that.

For the life of me, I cannot keep Matt Damon and Jude Law straight. I know they look nothing alike, but it was The Talented Mr. Ripley and it was downhill from there. To add insult to injury, that movie had both Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow in it, another two who I switch up.

In fact, the whole blond actor thing throws me for a loop. All those white guys -- Ethan Hawke (GATTACA with Jude Law), Ewan McGregor, Rick Schroeder, Johnathan Rhys-Meyers (Velvet Goldmine with Ewan McGregor) -- look the same to me. If they are in a movie, I can clearly identify them. But ask me a week later who played what role, I always get confused.

Elias Koteas and Christopher Meloni were separated at birth I'm pretty sure.

And supposedly Jake Weber is not Tim Roth (I'd still like to see a DNA test though).

Not necessarily because they look alike, but more because my brain seems to have assigned them to the same exact locations, so I can never remember which one I'm talking about:

Gary Busey and Nick Nolte
Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman
Leslie Ann Warren and Susan Sarandon

Dominic West and Matthew Glave - so much so that I was absolutely certain that Matthew Glave (Glenn Gulia from the Wedding Singer) had played two roles in "Rock Star" - that of Chris' brother and that of Kurt Cuddy. Struck me as bizarre until I watched the credits and realized it was two different people.

Whoa—I thought that was Gwen Stefani.

Anyway...Tom Waits and Ron Perlman. I know, everyone thinks that. But still...needed mentionin'.

I'm probably the only person to never get Bill Paxton and Bill Pulman confused. Why? Cause I HATE Bill Paxton. He is a crappy actor and is only in crappy movies (did you see Twister?)

Bill Pulman in LONESTAR! So that makes it easy. I mean, they don't look anything alike, just have similar names.

I know who Chris Rock is. I've seen him here and there. A few years ago I heard someone mention a guy named "Kid Rock." For at least two years, I was just assuming these were the same person. Any reference I heard to Kid Rock (and granted, there weren't that many), my mental image was of Chris Rock.

It took me a while to figure out that Ashley Judd and Charlize Theron were two different women.

I recently bought the complete series of Undeclared on DVD and discovered that Charlie Hunnam is almost indistinguishable from Heath Ledger's early roles.

And then there's the triple-play of Renee Zellweger, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jewel.

For ages and ages, I could never remember if I'd seen Lee Marvin in a movie role, or James Coburn. I'd talk about Lee Marvin's role in "The Magnificent Seven" or "The Great Escape," then catch myself thinking, "Wait... that was Coburn,m wasn't it."

I saw a preview of Pride and Prejudice and thought it starred Natalie Portman. It was Keira Knightley. I consider this an acceptable mistake, as Keira played one of the fake Amidalas in The Phantom Menace

Darn. I came in with two (Helen Hunt/Leelee Sobieski and Julia Roberts/Monica Potter), and both were already covered.

I'll second (third?) that for the longest time, until I paid attention to the credits, I thought it was Susan Sarandon reunited with Tim Curry in Clue, not Leslie Ann Warren.

I agree with Joey Lauren Adams/Renee Zellwegger and Charles Durning/Brian Dennehy (I actually wrote "Brian Durning" there!)

Also --

Brian Blessed and John Rhys-Davies

Allison Janney and Ileana Douglas

Vicki Lewis and Kathy Griffin

Dennis Quaid and Jeff Bridges

Stockard Channing and Elizabeth Perkins (despite the fact that I recently saw them together in the same movie)

Matt Damon and Brad Pitt

Fran Drescher and Maggie Wheeler

Laura Linney and Julianne Moore

Laura Linney and Helen Hunt

Laura Linney and Heather Graham

And Ewen McGreggor looks a lot like a young Malcom McDowell(or is it Roddy McDowell )

I confuse Bill Pullman and Jeff Daniels.

And since I'm really OLD, there were 3 character actors (way back when) who were very similar-looking (in my opinion) Skip Homeier, Keith Andes and Richard Webb. Any fans of the original "Star Trek" series will know them because they made at least one episode each. (Skip Homeier made two).

And also from those days of yesteryear, James Whitmore looked a lot like Spencer Tracy don't you thnk?
