Today's "Wild Kingdom" encounter.

I was weed whacking the grass growing along the small lake I live on. I was getting ready to do the last little stretch when I noticed a 6-8" bullhead (catfish) laying in the grass maybe 6" from shore. Obviously still alive, gasping for oxygen. My first thought was he had lunged for some prey and landed in the grass. His belly was towards me and just as I was going to nudge him back into the water with the string trimmer I noticed the upper jaw of a water snake clamped on him. The water snake then picked it up clear of the ground and moved it another foot or so inland. The thing I noticed at that point was that it seemed like a lot of fish for a snake that wasn't all that big. Long story short, the snake was a better judge of how much fish he could handle than I was. I checked back on his progress several times and after about 40 minutes, fish went down the hatch.

My clearest memory of Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was some monitor lizards Jim was trying to handle with some welder's gloves. They kept lashing him with their tails. Left me with a special place in my heart for monitor lizards, the Komodo Dragon being the largest. I had a Nile Monitor for a while but they are best suited for expert keepers, I couldn't do it justice. They are very temperamental. Mine died.

Reminds me of the time I was out in the yard in Texas and heard a pitiful cheeping sound. I looked over and saw a green tree frog in the jaws of a (smallish) snake.

I rescued the frog. The snake was not happy.
