Strangely, I remember him from Lethal Weapon 4 the most.

But yeah, he's in everything.

I remember him from Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP_gV2cWntg

Especially the scene where he teaches Booger the zen of hawking loogies:

(go to 2:56 to watch the scene)

Cartwright?! Cartwright?!

I knew who James Hong is and I was afraid this was an RIP thread.

I guess he's living the positive version of playing stereotypes.

Whew. I thought this was going to be an RIP thread.

His two appearances in the early years on The Big Bang Theory are great.

And he appeared on Sky King. Woot!

While he's been around forever, the first time I actually 'noticed' him was in "Black Widow" (1987), in which Theresa Russell tells him, "You can die, or you can die happy."

Often speaks with an accent, born in Minnesota.

One of his better acting roles may have been his voice work in Kung Fu Panda.

It kinda boggles my mind how often you see him. I mean, it is almost as tho there isn't a single other Asian actor available! Yeah, he's good, but to some extent, having such a familiar face can detract from the movie/show.

Checking it seems he doesn't have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

There is a Facebook group to rectify this error, an online petition, etc.

But it unfortunately won't happen unless someone ponies up the bribe money to the association.

Andy Cohen and Wendy Williams are going to get stars but not James Hong?

I don't blame Hong. But it's a disgrace the way the studio hired a human for the role rather than casting a goose.

Umm...sorry, no. Similar look, but that was Kim Chan as Uncle Benny
Coincidentally(?) Chan was Benny Wong in The Corruptor a year earlier.

There are loads of "That Guy" actors out there - so much so that it's an internet thing. Hong appears at #21 on that list.

But he is excellent. And his filmography is insanely long - he's worked steadily since 1954 (admittedly, usually in some racist Asian stereotype role but hey, it's a job).

Is Stephen Root a "That Guy"? I think of him as a recognized actor.

Kind of a crappy list, if you ask me. Not because of who is there, but because of who isn't. For example, Herbie Faye belongs on that list, if anyone does.

I admire your dedication to analysing the relative fame of supporting character actors.

There are many other "That Guy" lists, FWIW; I just picked one of the first Google results.

Yeah, the SDMB is the only place I'd expect to see a person who is an expert in character actors to respond. Bravo.
