A corroborating story on Rolling Stone, indicating that a spokesperson for the band had confirmed the news.

Just saw this.

What a shock. I do wonder if this wasnít a sudden thing. He was a very private person, but it was also well known that Rush ended because he wasnít up to playing anymore.

RIP

I think the only one that might rival Neil is when Alan Parsons goes (hopefully not for a good long time).

As per a statement on the band's Facebook page:

Quote:
It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma).

Aye; this one is seeming to sting extra hard. I wasn't even a Rush fanatic; just a fan of their good stuff, really. But I know every single nuance of every one of those tunes and lots about a lot of their other tunes. This sucks but hey, no one gets out alive.

This smacked me between the eyes when I saw it. I've been a Rush fan since the mid-80s. I've got all their albums, and have attended at least one show on every one of their tours from 1989 until their 40th anniversary farewell tour. I've always admired Neil as someone who managed to keep his privacy in a very public industry (especially with two extroverted band fellow bandmembers who enjoyed the spotlight a lot more than he did). His motorcycling travelogues were excellent too.

I had no idea he was even ill--but then, apparently, that was what he wanted. Private until the end. Condolences to his wife and daughter, Geddy and Alex, and the rest of his friends and family.

Yeah, this smarts.

It's not too much to say that, along with Robert Heinlein, Peart's lyrics gave me the jumping off point to adulthood for me. Even when I disagreed with them I had to think things through with them.

67 used to sound really old. Now it seems way too young to die.

RIP Neil. You were a big part of my growing up.

Damn, hell of a drummer, and really a damn good lyricist (hey, you can't rule the Earth in every facet you endeavor).

One of my favorite sets of lyrics by him was The Spirit of Radio.

Yeah, this is probably hitting me harder than I expected. I'm a 12 year old nerdy bass player/Rush fan deep down inside.

Damn, not only was Rush one of my favorite groups, but one my Brother and I shared a common liking for, and went to concerts many times over the years. [while I am sad my brother is dead, I am glad he is not around to get this news.]

Holy moly. I gasped when I saw the thread title. Never was that huge a Rush fan, but I've heard enough to know that Peart was a master of his art. Big loss to music.

How do most people pronounce Peart?

I've always said "pert," and CTV agrees, however two CBC news people have now said "peert."

I believe "Peert" is the way he pronounces it. I'm only the most casual of Rush listeners, but I've learned that somewhere along the way.

The "E" is long.

Back when I worked at the grocery store pharmacy, I had several customers with that surname (and no, I'm not in Canada) and they always pointed this out when I pronounced their names correctly.

There's not much of a better all around song that demonstrates Neil and Rush at full roar than Red Barchetta. Plus the lyrics Neil wrote are incredible.

Holy shit!

I saw this thing somewhere, I think maybe it was a cartoon. It depicted the stool Neil sat on, surrounded by dozens of drums. The stool was thinking, ďWithout me, none of this would be possible!Ē

Damn, that sucks. I saw Rush three times in the 80's - 90's, so awesome. And 67! So early for this.
