NHL 103 - October 2019 - Let's Do That Hockey!

Pre-season thread here.

Now that the preseason is closed out, it brings some good news for the Knights' first games: Sharks’ Evander Kane suspended for 3 games for abuse of official

He'll miss a game against Nashville in addition to the 2 against Las Vegas.

I was pleased with what I saw from the Knights during the pre-season. The one are where the Knights still need to improve is Power Play scoring. Our PP defense is okay and could use improvement, but I'd really like to see more points resulting from when we have the advantage.

The Devils will be better than they were last year, which isn't saying much.
The additions of Hughes, Gusev, Simmonds and Subban should make them more interesting, at least. I'm not sure how much Simmonds and Subban have left, but they should be at least decent. Goalkeeping is their biggest question mark.
Hopefully Taylor Hall will be healthy this season and we can enjoy his talent before he inevitably signs with Toronto next offseason....

Looks like another long season for the Red Wings.

Quote:
The defense is bad. Like, one of the worst units in the league bad. Just about every defender the Red Wings have is playing over their heads. They do have a potential star in Filip Hronek, but the rest of the unit is dismal...

...There are worse tandems to have in net, but there’s only so much either of these goaltenders can do with the defensive personnel that Detroit will put on the ice this season. They’re going to be pummeled with pucks.
Fortunately, my second choice team is the Sharks, who have a bit more potential this year. I'll have to cheer for them until injuries knock out some old Wings veterans and some of the youngsters (Filip Zadina, Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno, Moritz Seider) get a shot. It won't help the Wings at all, but at least they'll be more fun.

they aren't going to get much better so long as they're obligated to keep playing Abdelkader, Helm, Ericsson, Nielsen, and DeKeyser thanks to their bloated contracts.

Dekeyser is still by far the best defensive D man. Helm still has good value as well.

Yup, thus my comment about injuries to those oldsters.

Being honest, they're not going to be any better with the young guys this year. They all need a little more development. But it would be good to get them a few shifts at this level now so they know what they're getting into. And maybe draft some more defensemen.

I was joking with someone a little bit ago; a few years ago I bought a Mrazek jersey, and he got traded. Then I bought a Zetterberg jersey, and he retired. I was asked "Please, please buy an Abdelkader jersey!"

Sounds like us Canes fans every July, back when Karmanos would give his "We like our team" speech.

Heh, the Stars look suspiciously like the previous season this preseason. It could be worse, but hopefully Monty has more success getting the whole crew to show up for three periods each game this year and the new additions contribute to the scoring.

24 seconds in and the Sens are up on the Leafs. I suspect that numerous people started reaching for the panic button, involuntarily.

heh, fans have no patience. it's like Stevie Y's first draft as GM. "We select Moritz Seider."

Fans were like "can we have Ken Holland back?"

No panic buttons here. It's a 60 minute game and an 82 game season. Toronto will lose some stinkers; this wasn't one.
I didn't get the game since I gave up cable, but followed the bouncing ball on TSN's game page.
Matthews becomes the fourth player in NHL history to score in each of his first four career season openers, joining Dit Clapper, Dave Andreychuk and Sergei Fedorov.

Looking forward to seeing how these guys do in a tough, tough division. I got to see about half of that team come through the AHL down here in Cedar Park with the Texas Stars, so it'd be a blast to see them make a deep run.

Got to watch the Blues/Caps tonight, good game to start off the season. And it's great to hear Doc Emmerich with the call, I really miss that in the off-season.

Because someday, hopefully someday soon, the NHL will morph into the WHL, with 82 teams in 47 countries. The season will last a little more than 10 months if all playoffs go the full seven games. Cross-promoting with death metal bands will more than double average game attendance. Players from Portugal, while few in number, will invariably dominate. The Stanley Cup Final gets more viewers than Beyoncé's Clone's latest "music" video. Wyld Stallyns music brings peace and harmony to the Earth. The end.

Was gonna post the following, and then decided naaa, last May, but then, after seeing the stat, below it......

Quite the oodles of coaching experience in the assistant coaches that new Flyers coach Alain Vigneault will have - Michel Therrien (Habs, Pens) and Mike Yeo (Wild, Blues [albeit 19 in SL]). Sure, head coaches go into assistant coaching jobs, but this is pretty beefy, along with returning AC Ian Laperriere, who's been with the organization for ten years - pretty solid core. This is AV's fourth team he's head coached.

Saw this on NBC's Prague game (where Hart let in one or two stinkers), so, no linky:

Coaching experience, in games:
Philly - 2,512
Florida - 1,768
Pittsburgh - 1,759
NYI - 1.606
NYR - 1,576

Interesting true factoid: the Sharks are a combined -3 on the PP to start the season. Minus three.

What a KICKASS birthday present for Mario Lemieux! (Happy Birthday Super Mario!)

The downside is, Malkin's probably going to be on LTIR.

Mantha, Mantha, Mantha.

4 Goals in the home opener, and it's only 6 years after I declared him a no-miss Hall of famer during the Red Wings draft.

yeah my sister and I were there. it was nuts. the first period was lackluster; I was thinking "here we go again, they forgot how to play" but Blashill must have chewed a few guys' asses off. 'course they got a lot of help from Dallas; two "too many men on the ice" penalties is inexcusable. especially if you commit one while already shorthanded.

Well, the Stars finally win the first out of their four hard games to start the season, and do it in style. Seguin stripping Ovi and going to the other end with a give-and-go to Radulov was a pretty sweet way to win a horse race of a game.

And I've been really impressed by the youngsters Dallas called up. Caamano first NHL goal tonight was pretty, and Gardner's been damn good on the PK.

And Hintz is on track to score 82 goals.

So, for a .25 record topped with a bunch of injuries, it ain't so bad.

Yes, the Stars game was fun but nerve-wracking. I too am impressed with Caamano and Gardner. However, I am sorry that we here in Cedar Park will probably not get to see Roope Hintz playing with the Texas Stars again. We get to say we knew him when, though.

Hehehe, nope. I don't think he'll be back other than to visit. I know I've only seen a few games with the others, but if they keep it up they might not be back either.

ETA: And nerve wracking games are the best hockey games. The last game of the Dallas-St. Louis series last playoffs was the best.

[Moderating]

Taking this in order:
wolfman, unless some aspect of a player's physical appearance has an effect on the way they play, it's not really relevant to the thread. I don't think it really rises to the level of a rules violation, but please try to stay on topic.

Leaffan, if you think that something deserves a warning, the appropriate course of action is not to say anything at all about it in the thread, but simply to report it. Which I note that you did do, but not until over two hours after you made that post.

And finally, wolfman, your post #45 there does warrant a Warning, for personal insults.

Not that this will last for too long or anything (so enjoying it while I can)...
The Canucks are on an unheard-of four-game winning streak. Last night they went into the lair of last season's Stanley Cup winners, and at one point Van. quickly went down two goals and then go right into a two-men shorthanded penalty kill, while I'm thinking, yeah, this is probably done like le diner, but back-up Thatcher Demko stands on his head, and just after the kill, Van brings it to within one and then tie it up, with Demko stopping six shots in the shootout for the win.
This might be my only feel-good post for the season, so I'm gonna bask indulgently, nigh gratuitously, in this.

SPOILER:
Ah, but the basking is short-lived, as I curse the schedulers, who, for the first time in NHL history, set up two back-to-back 1 pm games, with the Canucks having the dubious honour of partaking in @ New Yawk and Joisey this weekend.

Connor McDavid looked unbelievable the other night as the Oilers trounced the Flyers. If I could pick any team for season tickets, it would be Edmonton, just to pick up my jaw every five minutes or so watching number 97. And wow - they're, what, six and one, right now? That won't last, but it'd be nice if they maybe turned shit around, finally.
(And their new arena has that funky Frank Gehry thing going on - neat!)
