(Although as much as I hate the Caps, what's wrong with goal celebrations? That's one thing I like about hockey. In the NFL, you get fined if you so much as do a fist pump)

And I'm glad it's not considered performance-enhancing, despite its many other negative characteristics. Cool that the league will have him undergo substance-abuse education and a counselling program, and has agreed to undergo regular testing - a bit more progressive than suspensions / bans that the other pro leagues stupidly resort to. Especially testing for pot - like, WTF?

In my previous post I meant to say, instead, 'suspensions / fines for pot - WTF?'

(an aside...to their credit, the NFL, through collective bargaining, has considered - well, last Dec. anyway, so they better darned well follow up on it - lifting the pot ban, especially since it's a proven pain reliever, as some of the players have been maintaining, and could probably use.)

Cam Ward retires.

"Cam Ward is retiring as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes after signing a one-day contract with the team that gave him his NHL start."

Wow, a player in this day and age having played for the same team for 14 seasons.
Definitely becoming an increasingly rare bird .

Gigantic news today: NHL informs union it won’t terminate labor deal. The NHLPA now has until 15 September to decide if they want to terminate the current deal early.
Quote:
“Based on the current state of the game and the business of the game, the NHL believes it is essential to continue building upon the momentum we have created with our players,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement issued by the league. “It is our hope that a continued sustained period of labor peace will enable us to further grow the game and benefit all constituent groups.”

The players, however, have concerns, notably regarding the escrow issue, Olympic participation and the split of hockey-related revenue. The NHL and NHLPA are in agreement on wanting more international competition and are in talks about holding another World Cup of Hockey as early as February 2021.

The NHLPA executive board is scheduled to meet in Chicago on Wednesday. The league and union have been meeting through the summer and those discussions are scheduled to continue.
Personally, I think the NHLPA will opt to keep the current deal, but I understand the escrow issue is frustrating. It's really hard to disagree that the sport is undergoing a huge momentum push at the moment tho, and it'd be great to see that continue.

Oh please no, I do NOT want to see another lockout. That would be what, the fourth?

I still cannot believe Bettman was allowed into the HOF.

There will not be a lockout. There theoretically could be a strike.

Well, there is SOME good news:

Report: Pierre McGuire removed from NBC’s No. 1 NHL team in favor of Brian Boucher

Now, they just have to ditch Milbury and Roenick. (Especially Milbury)

Good news, everyone!

ETA: Actually, I don't hate Mr. McGuire. But I don't particularly like him either.

I predict that this season the Ottawa Senators will play 82 regular season games.

Hopefully Nik has taught one or two young defenders the finer points of a proper "Kronwalling."

This could be a bold prediction depending on your definition of "play". I will concede that they will be officially listed as participants in 82 regular season games, but I think it's a stretch to say that the team as currently constituted has enough talent to play NHL hockey.

Here I am defining "play" as "to participate in a contest or game," which I think is a safe bet, though, knowing Eugene Melnyk, there is a nonzero possibility they could screw that up.

In the sense of "play" meaning to engage in a competitive sport at a reasonably competitive level, I agree that the hopes are dim.

In the sense of "play" meaning to engage in something that is fun, I can't speak to whether the Senators will find it fun. I am very certain their fans won't.

I get the feeling the players don't like him all that much.

Plus he once had a Penguins fan kicked out of a game simply because the guy was carrying a sign with a picture of him that said "Regis" on it. The guy was a very well-known and beloved fan, who was a cancer survivor. (Unfortunately, it returned and he didn't make it)

So suffice to say, he's not a very popular figure around these parts.

No kidding, and with players like Taylor Hall (who's bad with skating with his head down), I'm sure there will be more Kronwalling in the future.

oh, ok, I didn't realize the league was supposed to anoint potential superstars as "untouchable."

that'll really make the game great.

I'm not implying that, nor trying to pass judgement in any way. Obviously just a perfectly neutral (actually leaning to quite appreciative) observation.

Shea Theodore won't be suiting up for the Knights for a bit as he recovers from testicular cancer.

The team, the game and the fans will still be here, Mr. Theodore; take your time and heal.

And from reading that article, the team really seems like a great group of people. Not just the players, but the entire organization.

I don't recall this many high quality RFAs still unsigned on training camp day one (which is basically medical):

Mitch Marner
Matthew Tkachuk
Charlie McAvoy
Brayden Point
Mikko Rantinen
Patrik Laine
Kyle Connor
Brock Boeser
Ivan Proverov

The agents couldn't care less if their clients miss TC - and hell, part of the season - in order to get a price they want. William Nylander last season was a unfortunate example of this.

You're welcome. At the start of the Knight's 3rd season, I am super-impressed by the lack of ego and the excess of goodwill that our players seem to have. I mean, I know it's hockey and not basketball or the NFL, but the Knights were very fortunate to amass so many players who come across as good-natured, positive-outlook people. It's still a competitive sport, but thus far the Knights have avoided having any jerks on the team. I don't think it's all luck, tho: I give a lot of credit to team management for their draft and trade choices, as I presume that "non-jerkishness" is a factor they consider when selecting players.

I've never been to any other team's hockey practices, but Knight's practices are like huge parties. We've sung Happy Birthday to players and coaches. We've had them clown around for us, specifically for the crowd, during practices. I've seen Nate Schmidt get mildly reprimanded for staying on the ice to talk to kids when he was supposed to be starting a new drill. They all just seem like genuinely nice people.

So yeah, we all hope that Mr. Theodore's recovery continues unabated and he's back on the ice doing what he loves ASAP.

Thanks for wishing him well!

The Toronto Maple Leafs and star forward Mitch Marner have agreed on a six-year, $65.358 million contract extension, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

The deal has an average annual value of $10.893 million.

ETA: Sooooo relieved!

But zero cap space, even after those $13mil in LTIR contracts get taken off.

Me too! I don't play hockey for free right now, but I'm willing to listen to any offers to take my not playing hockey to the next level! I'm passionate about this, and dedicated, and I know I could not play hockey with the best of them!

hey, at least they're not spending 5-6 million a year each on guys like Abdelkader, Nielsen, Ericsson, and DeKeyser.

(best thing I heard about what led to Ken Holland being kicked upstairs- "How can a team be in the middle of a rebuild but bumped up against the salary cap?")

Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov has been suspended without pay for three regular-season games by the NHL for inappropriate conduct. The decision comes less than a month after he was banned from playing for Russia for four years because of a positive test for cocaine.

The NHL announced its punishment Saturday, saying it followed a meeting with Commissioner Gary Bettman on Monday. The league said Kuznetsov would not appeal.

Stars and Wild are just about to begin on FSSW. Preseason is a good chance to see some players that might not be there early (or at all) in the regular season. Looking forward to seeing Bow in goal, having seen him here in Cedar Park with the Texas Stars last season. And really, just hearing that sound of puck on ice is exhilirating.

Looking at the team for 25 minutes into preseason, I am sold on the Wings Good mix of energy, skill, speed, and hands. I'm thinking this year looks pretty good for starting another playoff streak.

So far, I really like the way that the Knights are rotating on both offense and defense. There's a lot of movement but slots are never left unguarded.

And tonight I was really impressed with Garrett Sparks. I suspect that Mr. Subban may not be secure in that #2 spot come mid-December.
