I went to __, but I didn't __

Was talking to my sister the other day. She and our other 2 sisters recently took a trip to Santa Fe. The Georgia O'Keefe museum is just about the only specific attraction I know of in the area, but she said they didn't go. The one sister who is somewhat of an artist said she wasn't a fan.

Are there any instances in which you went somewhere but made the choice not to visit one of that places iconic attractions? I'm thinking about situations when time/$ was not a constraint.

(Sure, there ARE many other things to do/see in Santa Fe.)

The only thing I can recall is when we drove out west through AZ, and decided NOT to take a very short side trip to see the Meteor Crater. No reason other than that we were "making good time." Went 30 yrs later, and was quite impressed.

Maybe another one is that I don't like most seafood, so I've travelled to New England but studiously avoided eating lobster.

I went to Paris, but didn't visit the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. I saw the tower from a Bateaux Mouches. I also walked in the courtyard of the Louvre, but didn't go inside. It seemed pretty expensive just to see one painting.

We went to Venice but didn't ride a gondola. Too expensive for a complete tourist experience. We were on the water plenty of times using the vaporettos, and just didn't want to deal with it.

I match 2.5 of the first 5 responses - Post #2 (Louvre bit), #5 and #6.

In addition, I've been to Porto but we didn't have any port. (But we did have a bottle of white port - is that a fail?)

j

ETA: and I've been to Dublin many times, but never had a Guinness there. Not a favourite.

I went to the beach/lake/river but I didn't go in the water. People who kinda know me are always shocked to find out that I do not enjoy swimming. I vacation and recreate near water, but I do not get wet.

Ditto. $60 for 50 minutes in 2000. Grazi, but no.

I went to "some road in South Dakota" (whatever that road is) that was close enough to see Mount Rushmore from a distance, but didn't stop.

Traveling through the general area, made a slight diversion to Las Vegas just to go to the Hofbrauhaus and have some food and beer. Fastest way in to and from the place. Just wanted to eat: didn't give a damn about 'Vegas as such.

If the place was located in a place like Boulder City, I would have been happier and felt less inconvenienced.

I went to the Southwest and the general Four Corners vicinity, but I didn't go to the actual Four Corners monument and stand in four states at once.

I've been to Vienna several times and even went out to the Prater, but never rode the gondola ferris wheel.

Spent five months on St. Thomas and never went in the water, let alone did any snorkeling.

Went to Vietnam, but didn't shoot anyone.

Went to Berchtesgaden, Germany, but didn't do the salt mine tour.

Spent five months in Cairo, but never rode a camel at the pyramids.

I went to London for 2 weeks and did not visit Big Ben or the palace. I lived in Los Angeles for 3 years and never visited the Chinese theater. I'm not a big fan of tourist spots. Saw many as a child and they were all more trouble than they were worth. If I'm visiting somewhere I am vastly more interested in how the locals live and the things they do than the tourist traps.

I've never taken the touristy gondola ride either in our 3 visits, but we went to the construction shop and actually helped paint one! Instead, we always took the traghetto. 50? eurocents and kids are free. Plus you get to stand up the whole time- way more authentically Venezian!

I lived in Chicago for 5 years and never went up the Sears Tower, NYC for 5 years and never went up the WTC (I went up the Empire State Building but I lived in Chicago at the time), and in Seattle 15 years and never been in the Space Needle.

I'm hard pressed to think of the most outstanding touristy item that I haven't gone to in a destination- maybe going to Berlin and not seeing Brandenberg Gate or the Berlin Wall. Oh, I've got it, I've been to Amsterdam ~10 times and you would have to pay me $1000 to go to the Anne Frank house. Absolutely no interest. That story is real enough to me already.

Went to Honolulu, didn't go to the beach.

A friend of mine got married there about 20 years ago. That's the only reason I went; I've never had any interest in visiting Hawaii.

He got married at a club that was featured on Magnum, P.I., which is close to the water... the sand was on the other side of a retaining wall from the wedding. That's as close to the beach as I got while I was there.

Lived in southern CA most of my life, but have never been to San Francisco, Las Vegas or Catalina Island.

(But, I have managed to get to Everest Base Camp, the Taj Mahal, Bali, Rangoon and a few other places, so I'm not actually a homebody.)

Been to Chicago without ordering a hot dog.

Been to Vegas without going in a casino.

Been to Pigeon Forge several times, but haven't been to Dollywood.

For next time, we do have a brew pub here in Boulder City... not the best food in town but not horrible. You can always drink in the beer garden and eat somewhere else. But if you fail to visit the dam, you can come back to this thread and post that was what you didn't do.

Indeed. I found myself in the same room as that painting but studiously avoided it. There are plenty of much more interesting artworks at the Louvres.

I've been to Florence but did not visit the Uffizi. We visited La Specola instead.

I have also been to Venice and passed up riding in a gondola.

I have been to Honolulu twice but never made it to Iolani Palace.

I have been to South Korea but did not visit Gyeongbokgung Palace. We did visit Changedeok Palace, though. And the DMZ including the JSA.

I went to Alexandria, Egypt, but didn't go the library. I'm a librarian. No one can believe it when I tell them.

I went to Lyndhurst*, New Jersey, on business with the better part of a day to kill but chose not to drive over to NYC. I could see the skyline from my hotel room, though.

I went to Rochester, New York, on business** with an entire afternoon to kill but didn't drive over to Niagara Falls. I simply didn't appreciate how close I was; in retrospect, I'd have gone.

* I think that's right.

** same trip.

I've been to London three times and the only thing I've formally "seen" are the Museum of London, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, the Science Museum, and Highgate Cemetery. I've seen lots of the famous buildings but have skipped the tours, only partly because of the time. If they had really short tours of less than an hour where you could just walk up and take them I'd do them, but signing up beforehand and committing to a 1 1/2 hour or more block of your time if you don't even know if you'll enjoy it or not isn't my cup of tea.

I had planned on seeing the zoo at Regent's Park, but when I walked up to it I thought "it's probably just going to be like any other zoo" and went walking up Primrose Hill instead. I've seen a lot of the parks that are unfenced where you can just ramble through on your own schedule and are much less crowded than the famous museums.

I deliberately avoid the Royal stuff because i'm not into that one way or another, although when I did accidentally go during Remembrance Day weekend, I stumbled upon a ceremony/parade small enough for me to be in the front row so I respectfully watched it for a few minutes before walking away.

Reminds me: I lived in Florence, SC (which is just a few miles from Darlington, SC) for two years, and lived in Bristol, VA/TN for five years, and never visited either the Bristol or the Darlington race tracks.
