Candy time: Are you a Smartie or a Dum-Dum?

It's almost time for Halloween, which means "Busy Season" for the makers of Smarties and Dum-Dums. (Honestly, do these candies even exist outside of October?)

So, if given the choice of either a Dum-Dum lollipop or a roll of Smarties, which do you take?

Dum-dum, no contest. I'm a sucker for hard candy.

Dum-dums do exist outside of Halloween, but mostly in little baskets next to bank tellers and a few checkout counters.

I'm a Smartie person myself, but I keep the candy dish on my desk stocked with Dum-Dums.

It saddens me that smarties.com is owned by the company that makes the American abomination, not one of the companies that makes proper Smarties (the inspiration for M&Ms).

Smarties. Not that either is great but dum dums are deffo worse than smarties. At least with smarties you can organize them by color before eating which is something.

There should be an option for neither: Chocolate candy.

Dum-dums. I swipe all I can from tellers and such. My glucose might go low. Can't take chances. Need suckers.

Neither. Both are gross, being non-chocolate candy. But if you held a gun to my head, I'd pick Dum-Dums.

I'm not sure I've ever tasted, or even seen, either of those candies. I'm not sure what they are. But I'm not much into candy, except chocolate.

Smarties exist year round. When I was younger, I was seriously addicted to them and used to love the day after Valentine’s Day sales.

I said Smarties but it's a little more complicated. Dum-Dums depend on flavor. Some I really liked as a kid and would call better. I can't for the life of me remember enough to say for sure which ones. I'd pick Smarties over a single Dum-Dum picked at random from a bag, though.

I will happily consume either or both. But for Halloween, I really prefer those miniature chocolate bars.

Dum-Dums, all the way. I could do with a butterscotch one right now.

Given the choice: Smarties. However, one look at my A1C and if there was a third choice of, "I'll pass," I'd take that one.

I appreciate the calls for chocolate, as I would prefer almost any item of food to a dum-dum or some smarties, but for the sake of this thread, let's pretend someone has a gun to your head and you have to choose one. Otherwise it just becomes another "What's your favorite candy?" thread.

I've got quite a sweet tooth, but am hard pressed to imagine a situation in which I would eat either of those.

Second choice: American Sweet tart-style Smarties
Last choice: Dum Dums

Lollipop for me. I like most flavors of Dum Dums.

I like these Smarties.

I haven't tried the new ones with a hard shell.

Just this weekend, we and friends got read the riot act by our children: "Look, parents. Spend some money on good candy for Halloween! No healthy stuff, and no penny candy that you can get in a big bowl at the bank." (so no Dum-Dums in our 'hood, I guess)

They said this to a group of organic hippie parents, some of who started asking things like "Well, what about raisins?"
My son had to school them: "Are you SERIOUS? In what world are raisins a fun, decadent treat? Those boxes are still going to be at the bottom of the Trick or Treat Bag in December. And the raisins will be rock hard."
Daughter joined in: "Who here wants to eat rock hard Halloween candy that's supposed to be soft? So no Bit-O-Honeys or Popcorn Balls or Circus Peanuts either."

Self-righteous Hippies=0, Kids=2. I was so proud.

I hate Smarties and I'm not a fan of any kind of hard candy. But if I had to choose, I'd take a Dum-Dum. The lesser of two evils.

Smarties.

Dum-dums are fine, but somehow I almost always end up with that crappy "mystery" flavored one. Smarties come with no such risk.

I'd pick Dum Dums because they are more sour. But either is fine, anything but candy corn and circus peanuts (blech!)

Smarties by a mile. I don't have the patience for dum-dums. I'm like the owl on the old Tootsie Pop commercial.

This confusing for non Americans. For me, Smarties are like M&Ms but much nicer (better chocolate). Even wiki says it's so.

American Smarties (the original, as far as I am concerned)
Root beer dum-dum
Other flavors of dum-dums

Unless there are Milk Duds. Then Milk Duds.

To me, Smarties will always be the poor man's Sweettarts, but even so, I prefer them over Dums Dums any time. Dum Dums are nothing more than hard candy on a stick. The only mortal who can possibly look cool consuming a Dum Dum is Kojak.

Dum Dums all the way.

I look forward to my treats after I get my haircut every 3 weeks.

Fruit Punch and Cream Soda are the best

Our Smarties are small discs of chalky candy. I don't think they're tart like Sweet Tarts but maybe. I've always hated them so I couldn't tell you the last time I had one - maybe 1966! The only other candy that I remember that is similar to M&Ms is Sixlets. They're round balls, same colors as M&Ms and come in a clear plastic sleeve. Of course not as good as M&Ms.

Those Sixlets taste just like the clear plastic sleeve that they come in. They're absolutely vile.

Back in my college days, we used to use (American) Smarties® as "chasers" for shots. Nothing like tiny tablets of dextrose and citric acid to quell the harshness of bottom-shelf vodka.

I've eaten plenty of both in my lifetime (remember as a kid you'd eat any kind of candy?)but I wouldn't really like to eat Smarties today. Dum Dums, no problem. In fact, this thread has reminded me that there are still a few pieces of candy in the dish on my desk, left over from. . . last Holloween?
<plucks the wrapper off a pineapple Dum Dum> Tastes pretty good to me.

By the way, should we assume that "Smarties" were named in direct relation to Dum Dums?

Smarties are chalky and sour, with some weird flavor that doesn't seem to actually vary between the different colors. They're very easy to get sick of. And they're really just generic Sweet Tarts. (I honestly didn't know they had a brand name for the longest time--I assumed any generic company would make them.)

Dum-dums actually have different flavors, and at least some of them taste good. So you get a better variety, and no chalkiness, just the typical hard candy. Plus it can be fun to get them off the stick.

They aren't my favorite candy or anything, but I'd take Dum-Dums every day of the week over Smarties. (My favorite basic "suckers" are the ones that are thick flat disks with a loop instead of a stick. I mostly only ever encountered them at banks, so they'd have a $ on them.)

As I child I would get a Dum Dum after each allergy shot. Eventually the doctor's office changed to trinkets and stickers. Probably the local dentists weren't too happy about the hard candy.

My current dentist recommends chocolate over hard candy as the hand candy basically bathes the teeth in sugar over a longer period of time.

Dum-dums. I never really liked Smarties, they always seemed like wanna-be SweeTarts to me.

ETA: Like BigT said.
