How often do you use the small pocket of your 5 pocket jeans?

I guess I have worn 5 pocket jeans most of my entire life. That little pocket which is kind of inside your right front pocket, how often do you use it, and for what? I think as a kid I may have put something in it and then forgot about and whatever it was that I put in there probably came out in the wash. As such I don't use that pocket for anything.

How about you?

Quite a bit actually. The big pocket on that side is where I keep my loose change, so I use the little pocket for things I want to keep handy but don't want to have to fish around for. Examples would be the thumb drive with music for my car, the RSA token for my network login at work, and my little spare hearing aid battery holder.

All the time. Special keys, things that need to be kept apart from the junk in the regular pocket, my pocket watch. You know, stuff like that. If the mailbox key isn't on its hook, check the watch pocket on my jeans.

If I'm taking the subway to work (which I do just about every day), I keep subway tokens in there.

Used it for change, quarters, dimes, etc. The pocket was originally made for a watch, but stayed on after people began wearing wristwatches.

Also, that little pocket isn't the fifth pocket. Levi's originally had one back pocket on the right side of the jeans. They became five-pocket in 1901, when the second rear pocket was added.

I used to keep change there, as it is easier to retrieve at the POS and didn't jingle that much there.

My Daddy used to keep his nitroglycerin in that pocket. I can't say ever used it, myself.

Depends of course on the fit, since they are not all the same size. So small change; transit pass, or if driving the newer car the e-key fob. Back before the Coming Of The Smartphone in the 00's when the mobile phone style trend was to make them as small as possible, I had at one point one that could securely nestle in there when folded!

I've occasionally put drugs, of the mundane, OTC type (e.g. ibuprofin) in there, if I suspected I might need them later.

All the time: Zippo® lighter, back when I smoked; pillbox nowadays; I wear a ring on my right hand and keep my keys in the right front pocket, so I'll tuck the ring into the "watch pocket" when I take it off for hand-washing, so the keys don't scratch the bejeebus out'n it; oh, and sometimes an honest-to-goodness pocket watch.

Every week. My mother is the church webmaster, and the service is recorded on a thumb drive. I put the thumb drive in my fifth pocket, where it stays until I get it to her. She puts it in a small blue bag in her purse.

That's where I keep the key fob to my car ('12 VW Golf TDI), the switchblade key fits perfectly in there.

My house and bike keys.

Tickets or tokens on metro systems (such as Paris or Bangkok) that require the ticket to be reinserted at the end of the journey, or may require its presentment to an inspector during the journey.

A thumb drive when I'm headed to the library and may do some scanning there.

I quite miss what I jokingly call the "condom pocket" (from an award-winning 1980s Levi's commercial) when I'm wearing pants that lack one.

Guitar pick or pocket watch (husband).

Special coins, for example, if I get a wheat penny I'll put in the 5th pocket until I get home.

Like the idea of putting a ring there while washing my hands (probably the entire bathroom visit). I have a number of pinky rings and they seem to want to drop into the sink when I wash my hands.

When I carry a watch it is a pocketwatch, and that is exactly what that pocket is designed for.

I use it infrequently for things that have been mentioned - a thumb drive, an individual key, guitar picks, sometimes coins because we have $1 and $2 coins here. I don't carry change. So not very often, but certainly far more often than I use the back pockets. The most I ever carry in them is a few sheets of folded up printed material that I don't feel like carrying, for instance say a form guide at the races.

I used to use it regularly to keep money for the bus separate. They needed the exact fare so knowing I had just the right combination for a couple of journeys was very useful. I have a pass now.

But I still use it every day for keeping the keyring with my work keys on it. They're in and out of the pocket several times every day.

Very rarely. I might stick my wedding ring in there if I'm doing a particularly dirty job, like working in the garden or mixing ground meat by hand. Or I might stick a coin in there. But mostly I don't even remember it exists.

This. I just checked to make sure the jeans I am wearing still have one (they do). I need to try using it, but I am worried that anything in there will dig into my thigh when I sit down. I'm kind of tactilely defensive...

Another vote for key fob. As long as I have the fob in my pocket my car will unlock and start for me with no traditional key needed.

When I was young and asked what that pocket was for, I was told it was a watch pocket. Don't know if that was true* but it's what I was told. Later, when I affected a pocket watch, naturally, I kept it in the watch pocket. Other than that, nothing. Had to check and see if today's pair of jeans even had one and it does but it contains nothing but lint.

My drugs are too big for the little pocket.

Lately I've been wearing shirts with a pocket for my vape pen, though.

As Dr Fidelius stated, (reply # 24) it is called a "watch pocket".

Wikipedia says "A watch pocket or fob pocket is a small pocket designed to hold a pocket watch, sometimes found in men's trousers and waistcoats and in traditional blue jeans. However, due to the decline in popularity of pocket watches, these pockets are rarely used for their original intended purpose.

I used to keep a series of small pocket watches in there. Note the plural. Very easy to forget to take them out, they go thru the wash, time for a new one.

Gave up on that and started carrying a cheap $12 Timex watch in my left pocket instead. Surprisingly, those seem to last and last and last. On the scale of 10-20 years. Very good value.

Once in a while I'll put something small in it that would be hard to retrieve among the keys and coins.

Nothing. I don't trust it. I would only put something in there if I desperately wanted to lose it.

I seem to recall hearing you can lick them seemingly forever with no ill effect to the watch.

I never use it intentionally, because I think things will fall out. I have a couple of pairs of chinos that have a similar small pocket, but it is entirely within the right pocket -- kind of a small flat pocket on the inside lining of the main pocket. I like those, because then I can keep something in that pocket without it damaging my phone, which is in the main right pocket.

When I'm visiting my mother in New York, I keep the front door key there. When I'm home in Panama, my key ring has apartment and car keys and they are too big to fit. If I know I may need a specific amount of change for tolls or a tip I might put it there.

I used to do that in college, with a watch chain attached to my belt. (Ah, the affectations of undergraduates!)

When I smoked I kept a Zippo or Bic lighter in there.

Now that I don't smoke anymore, there's still a Bic lighter in there, but it gets considerably less use, and when it does, it's usually as a bottle opener.

The people saying key fobs and watches make me think that the pocket must be a fair amount bigger in men's pants than women's. There's no way in hell I could get a key fob or pocket watch into that pocket in any of my pants.

I used to keep a pocket watch in there. Now I have switched to a watch that clips on a belt loop (I have always disliked wearing a watch on my wrist) and now I use it to hold a small container of pills in case I am out to dinner and have to take my evening pills. So I always use it. One of the reasons I wear jeans almost always.

When I go to Ireland I use the little pocket for pounds or Euros and the big one for smaller change. So the last time I used one was 2004.

Dang. I need to get home for a visit.

My keys. I only have two, one for the front door, one for my bedroom door, so it's the perfect size.
