After _many years_ I return to SDMB to find Shodan

Engaged in _exactly the same arguments_.

And exactly the same people responding.

With exactly the same points.

Like seriously. Y'all. Actually for real, just resolve not to reply to Shodan. It's that simple.

Hey, Frylock! I can imagine how frustrating it'd be to return and find the same schtick going on. But it ain't just Shodan.

So many threads still get stuck in a loop of "What about X?" "Here's evidence to refute X" "But what about X? Never thought of that, didja?" "Here's different evidence to refute X" "Well, guess your fake news sites never told you about X!" "Here's a reasoned argument refuting X" "X! Ha! You sheeple are powerless against the moral strength of the believers in X!!!" "Here are fifteen calmly-presented reasons, that I've spent an hour compiling, to show you why X isn't logical..." "The Dope Hive-Mind falls before the might of the True Right-Thinkers!"

It's like a Black Hole where logic and truth get sucked in, but we can't stop spending our time throwing stuff in there...
Well, I for one am willing to take a Do Not Feed The Hole pledge.

Sadly, we have not been able to put together the special ops mission to parachute dirt bikes into downtown Tripoli, snatch him, and airlift him to a black site.

The sad thing is, he is one of the most reasonable conservatives around these days.

In the history of the interwebs has that approach ever worked?
What you request cannot be done, so think of something else.

I agree. While I generally disagree with Shodan in any debate involving political topics, I always feeling like I'm participating in a dialogue. Shodan is expressing his own opinions, understands what he's saying, reads what other people say, and responses to other people. He's miles ahead of some of the other conservative posters we've had here who don't appear to understand their own posts and don't read anyone else's.

Wait, what?

Shodan spouts right-wing talking points, ignores any post that proves him wrong., etc.

The fact that he is the “best” that the right has to offer is a testament to how shitty the right is.

It works just fine at the individual level. I have him on ignore, and I have no complaints. I don't feel I've missed anything. I just occasionally check to see if he's still using snark as a replacement for actual argument, rather than just an adjunct. Or if he's still acting inconsistent with his statement in 2016 about being on the anti-Trump side by attacking people for being anti-Trump.

It's not like Frylock said the guy would leave. Just that people should by now realize that they're just saying the same things they said before, and that it doesn't work.

DNFTT is lousy policy for trying to actually moderate a troll. But it's still good advice for people to stop wasting their time and getting angry about someone who won't chance.

His judgement on matters apart from politics can be remarkably sound.

I get the impression that his collections of books, music, films, and porn would prove a fine source of entertainment.

Perhaps, like Vladimir and Estragon waiting for the titular Godot, we are all here just waiting for that moment when Ignorance has been slain once and for all. But it will never come. In reality, the fight is eternal.

So, take some comfort in the cadences and familiarity of the eternal. And fight on!

I agree. And unlike so many right-wing loons that show up every so often, he posts in other fora - Cafe Society, and I believe IMHO. He's not a one-trick pony who's only interested in ranting or trolling the librulz. I've never found him objectionable; just wrong.

Hey OP, since you were gone for a while, have you stopped to think about how your user name went from cutting edge cool in 2001 to “ok boomer” in 2020?

(Just trying to liven up this putting a little)

Ok Boomer? Boomers would have no idea what the reference was. (I had to look it up.) It should be "Ok Millenial!"

I have come to the regrettable conclusion that internet message boards must always have someone to hate. Doesn't matter if the board is liberal, conservative, science, gaming or sports based. Some subset is always going to seek to ban\fight with whatever group that they can identify as different than the majority of the board.

If you ban the groups of people on a board that the most people complain about the goal post will just shift to a new subset of people. The easiest place to see this is sports based forums. Many of these don't allow apposing fans on their boards. So instead of beating up on opposing team posters the message board will eat their own. (ie the "real fans" tear down the debbie downer negative posters or the "realistic" fans tear into the fan boy posters who think the current coach can do no wrong and won't reach for excellence etc.)

(Note that not all POSTERS are like this but a large enough subset of the human population is that this "truism" will never totally go away. About the only "solution" I have seen is making users use their real name instead of usernames. I put "solution" in quotes as this merely keeps the problem down to a small roar. )

Personally, I prefer the current policy wear it is very difficult to ban most posters. Keep Shodan. The board is better with a diversity of opinions.

I'm surprised that the OP only noticed one person repeating the same things over and over again, year after year. For whatever reason, this board has a very high hedgehog-to-fox ratio, to the point where you can pretty much guess what a post will state just by looking at the author's name.

Heheeh, this Xer knew the character your name referenced without a scorecard, but is surprised that you thought the SDMB operates as anything other than a microcosm of society at large. It's managed in most places, and we can't actually clobber each other out of rage like you can in real life, but the same folks will do the same stuff until they aren't the same folks or they just aren't anymore.

It's fun, but it's repetitive sometimes. Just like life.

This is true. As a different identity I participate in pop music message boards. You won’t believe the fights these people get into, called “fan wars”.
