Roberta Flack - I Can See The Sun In Late December

Catherine Howe, Karen Carpenter are a couple of other examples.

Maddy Pryor. Yes, she's soothing to me. I don't like too smooth a singer. It actually irritates me.

Lee Wiley, although you could argue that she swings too much to be “soothing.”

Agggggghhhhh. HATE Norah Jones. Little nepotist faux-jazz performer who’s tricked other faux-jazz performers into thinking she’s a jazz performer. Her first album made me puke, and I haven’t listened to her since.

Uh, I realize I’m in a minority, tho.

Yes, when the news or traffic makes me crazy it's Billie. Natalie Merchant when I am having a massage works

I love both of those singers. Neko Case is one of my favorite artists. But I don't know if I would call them soothing.

A million times yes to this. Also to Elizabeth Fraser and Karen Carpenter. They all seem to sing as effortlessly as breathing, like they aren't even trying and I suspect that has something to do with that soothing effect.

One not mentioned but worth chucking in the mix is Kate Bush. OK, not for everything she's done but on such as "50 words for snow" she absolutely fits the bill.

I'm not sure if "soothing" is precisely the right word, but Haley Westenra's voice just sort of makes me melt.

Rachel Foster from the Weekend Players (Angel) amongst other projects.

And, of course, Tracey Thorn from Everything but the Girl (No Difference) and her collaborations with Massive Attack (Protection).

Oh, Tracye Thorn is a good one, especially "Protection". It's one of those otherworldly songs by Massive Attack only they can do. They always make their guest-singers shine.

My first thought was Regina Spektor.
Some of her music may be quirky to the point of being... well, too quirky.
But listening to “On the Radio” makes me fall in love with her every time.

I thought of this thread immediately when I heard Natasha Khan/Bat For Lashes on NPR this afternoon. Apparently the lyric themes aren't so soothing but the music and vocals were.
