Build Yer Own Town...

...Lets start with the name.

You get to build a town and populate it with as many people as you like.

I guess sorta like SDMB Sims maybe?

Anyway, what will you call your new metropolis?

Chu' Diafthorá for me, just to mess with people.

My Town is named Tavlorn. It will be planned out as a round city on a hill. The town will have a small river port attached to it.

Becktown will be very green. Lots of parks. Dog parks, people parks, kiddie park/playgrounds. No giant box stores. Mom and Pops on every corner. Diners, Pubs, Bars, and Book stores between.
The center of town has a chug-a-lug type train station that everyone uses.

What exactly is a chug-a-lug type train? I love the rest of it. I dream of living in a nice walking town with a corner bar.

where or how did you come up with it?

Yes. Small steam locomotive. I want to smell it and have occasional cinders in the air.
I want a very good soda fountain/ice cream parlor too. And a 5 and dime store next to the huge library.
My town is lame. I may have to add a Casino on the edge of town. And a horse track.

I'm not sure where I came up with the name. I thought it might be from an old Fantasy novel or story but Google didn't have any hits. But I'm a gamer and world builder and Tavlorn has been a city or town in my worlds since the early 80s.

Steam locomotive is nice or trolleys. I can live without the casino & track but I'll take a zoo just outside the town.

I play a game called Cities Skylines. My first effort was "Danville." Every time I restarted I'd use the same name but add another city suffix, so eventually it became "New Danvilletonboroughsteadfieldburg." Currently it's a winter/alpine theme, so it's a relatively small mountain town with a mining industry nearby where almost everyone works, but there's a university being built on the other side of the bay which should perk things up soon.

Hire a team of linguists to invent a new language and a new alphabet, and translate the Great Literary Classics into the new language.
Hire a team of musicians to invent a couple of new instruments, and to compose music for them.
Hire a team of botanists to develop several new fruits, vegetables, and spices, and hire a chef to develop a cuisine around them.
Hire a fashion designer to create a folk costume.
Hire an architect to create a new architectural style.

Build a farming town in the architectural style. Hire people to live in the town, wear the folk costume, speak the language, raise the crops, etc.

When we have a generation of children who have grown up using the new language, we will start agitating for political independence.

It sounds nice, very idyllic.

I'd guess my town is the next county over. Uh, those who care to do the translation might get the wrong idea(the founder was a misanthropic asshole who had a habit of slipping mickeys into his bar patrons drinks and robbing them for laughs) It's sorta the seedier industrial version of Becktown. Lots of factories, a bit grimy, no trains or trolleys, just cold impersonal buses. The playgrounds are mostly asphalt paved basketball courts surrounded by 6foot chain link fence thats kind of rusty. The people are good hearted if a bit taciturn and unfriendly. No real serious crime to speak of beyond the usual drunken fist fights on the weekends and the occasional highschoolers spraying graffiti.

There is a bit of organized crime since we do have a redlight district. But the crimebosses are generous to the community and the police chief is on the payroll anyway so...

Not a great town, but not the worst either. All the factory managers live over in Becktown.

Not quite it, but I used to live in Dansville. It's a nice town. Its major claim to fame is that the American Red Cross was founded there. And it's the place where breakfast cereal was invented.

My town will be called "Springfield".

Every house will be a sweet two-story with dormers, and will have perfect landscaping and a white picket fence in front, and out back the kitchen door will open into the garden with separate top and bottom halves. One of those houses will be occupied by a perfect family whose patriarch works for the General Insurance Company and is played by Robert Young. Everyone in the town will be scrupulously honest, except for Bud's friend who stole that money from Cathy's piggy bank, but he eventually learned his life lesson, thanks to the character played by Robert Young.

Sorry, Wolfie. That's a backlot in Hollywood. You can move to Becktown. We have good Doctors for what ails you.

There is already a Beckton in England. It grew up around a gas works and sewage treatment plant. Your version probably smells a little better at the very least.

My town has a central park with a carousel, bandstand, baseball diamond, petting zoo, gazebo and a fountain. There's always some kind of festival every Sunday in the summer. Lining the park are a schoolhouse, library, ice cream parlor, candy store, book store, animal shelter, firehouse, bicycle shop, etc.

I think I'm going back to 1890. All we need is a general store, a saloon and a livery stable.

I'll come too (if you'll have me) if you'll add a farmers' market.

In a nice green park in the middle of town; and with a big pavilion with a roof to keep the rain off so we don't have to bring tents, storage so we can leave our tables etc. there and not have to haul them back and forth every week, parking for vendors right next to the stalls, beams we can hang things from over the stall space, toilets and potable water for customers and vendors. It can be used the rest of the week for parties and dances and music festivals.

Is the Robert Young character acquainted with the nuclear safety inspector?

Huh, all these quaint, nice, colorful little burgs, mines the only one that I see in my mind as basically in a gray scale color scheme. I wonder what that says about me.

Anyway, this is fun, lets hear some more, towns, details etc.
How did your town get started, when, why that location?

Chu' Diafthorá was started beside a river that supplied the bartending misanthrope with water for his brewery way back in 1847. It was intended to be a waypoint on the route west but most wagon trains bypassed it for the easier crossing 20 miles north.
In a desperate bid to keep his struggling business going, Ed established a brothel in order to attract cattle drovers taking their herds to the yards. This too was a failure as the town was too centrally located between the major cities or on the wrong side of the river. The brewery was burned down by a disgruntled working girl from the brothel. Ed rebuilt, a distillery this time, and began shipping his wares out. Gradually growing larger and hiring more workers the town of Chu' Diafthorá slowly came fully into being. During the prohibition era, Ed Jr. stayed in business making root beer, ginger ale and sacramental wine for churches. He also smuggled booze to the speak easies in Denver and Kansas City. This led to the eventual take over of the distillery and brewery by The Corporation, an organized crime outfit, forcing Ed Jr. Into early retirement, in the bahamas, for his health. Eventually the bar was sold, the brewery closed and remodeled as the biggest cathouse in the country. The Corporation moved into money laundering, keeping the redlight district as a small change decoy for the feds. You know how you used to get rebates for stuff sometimes? Send in your reciept and get a check for 45 cents or something like that? All those checks go through a bank in my town, with companies moving large amounts of money in and out daily. This bank is owned by The Corporation and is where they do the money laundering. They don't allow drugs, well a little pot, but that's all. They also give a pension to every cop, firefighter and veteran who was born there who gets disabled on the job. They try to maintain a middle of the road "invisible" profile for the town so as to avoid unwanter attention from the FBI, or snyone else for that matter.

Chu'-town has that annual rock festival. Debauchery and mayhem spilling out into the countryside. The overflow in Becktown is complained about at all townhall meetings. Right up until money is deposted in banks. Town leaders look the other way, knowing the tourist trade may be keeping Becktown afloat. And we have those nice new sidewalks around town.
At the water tower some party-hardy folks climbed up and graffiti-ed some unfortunate epitaphs that are proving hard to cover up. But other than that we enjoy the tax revenue from Chu'-towns burning Dog festival.
Party on!!

Hey, just trying to be good neighbors ya know? Besides, kids! Uh? Ya know whadimean? Uh? Hey, at least they ain't no drugs harder than a little pot! (Hey, ain't that what we all want really? Sit around, feeling a little happy, maybe pat a few bottoms, watch the kids play?) Yeah, you maybe don't know this, but The Corporation, they don't allow none of that crap. One of our boys or girls is found to be using that stuff or even lettin the booze or hemp get outta control, they gets rehabilitated, with a quickness. You remember that little dust up a few years back? Some udda new folks got shot? A few houses got burned down? Yeah that was some Jamaican run shit show tryin ta muscle into the area. Theres a reason The Corporation pays a pension to alla those cops and firefighters and vets, other than the goodness of their hearts and love of country I mean. Some of 'em are less disabled than others, if you get my drift.

Oh yeah, don't forget the community college Beck. I mean Chu' Diafthorá may ne hard tough little industrial town, but that don't mean the folks don't want better for their kids and most of them end up starting at least in your community college.
