I might add http://www.astronautix.com/ , an incredibly comprehensive site about spacecraft, space missions, and astronauts of the past and present. And quite a bit of what was planned, but never built; and what is planned, but is yet to be built. Check it out.

Everything2 (or E2) is somewhere between H2G2 and Wikipedia in its usefulness. It has a mirror of the Jargon File, and lots of good, but occasionally outdated, information. The signal-to-noise ratio is pretty good, and it's collaboratively filtered and edited. I use it to research arcana that aren't very well covered elsewhere online.

www.invisible-web.net
They wrote a book on the invisible web, appropriately entitled "The Invisible Web" in 1991, and while it may not be exhaustive, the scope and breadth of the list is surely exhausting. It's a great resource tool. |

This site gives a list of verified anti-spyware programs available.
In summary, currently they mention Ad-Aware, Pest Patrol, Spybot Searth and Destroy, and Webroot Spy Sweeper. For prevention, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard. Check the site for source URLs and further information, discussion, and for changes. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm has good background on the subject, including references to bogus, rip-off, and other problem "spyware" applications. I can't vouch for this on personal knowledge, but it was referenced by The Register. |

Three resources for authoring your own DVDs:
The DVD FAQ: http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html All kinds of questions about DVD, its features, and its history, on one long web page. Jim Taylor, author of the definitive reference book "DVD Demystified", keeps this page up to date. VideoHelp.com: http://www.videohelp.com/ Also known as dvdrhelp.com, vcdhelp.com, and svcdhelp.com, this site contains a vast collection of DVD tips, tricks, and software and hardware ratings. Volunteers maintain a database of DVD players, recorders, and computer drives, searchable by model, make, feature and compaibility. There are how-to guides on such things as how to make your home videos DVD-compliant, and how to make DVD menus. There is also information on authoring VCDs and SVCDs, the discs that preceded DVDs. The Unofficial DVD Specifications Guide: http://www.dvd-replica.com/DVD/index.php When you've come to the end of the simple software that came with your DVD burner, and you want to get down to the nitty-gritty of cell/menu commands and the DVD virtual machine, this is the place to start. The author offers a description of the various elements of the DVD design hierarchy, and explains how the commands work in each elemnt. Calculators are provided that build the hex codes for each command from your desired selections. A more detailed description and guide is available as an for-pay ebook.

quackwatch=reference?
Listing quackwatch.org as a "reference site" is as ignorant as both the quacks the site claims to discredit and Quackwatch's resident expert, Mr Steve Barrett. It really is a shame that Mr Barrett's targets are as ignorant and fanciful as he is, because, in theory, his website could provide a much needed service.

I just discovered straightdope and immediately got drawn in by a front page question... the one about the gossip on Bush & sex. I wanted to post a comment concerning another Bush sex scandal reported in only a couple of credible media sources so many people haven't ever heard of it... so I pressed COMMENT.
But then my only choice was NEW THREAD. I'm totally new to this style of message board and decided that must mean a thread connecting my comment to the one I clicked COMMENT for. But now I don't think it did. I read through this General Questions section and found no instructions. Would somebody have pity on me and explain how I post a comment and what a New Thread is? wendywilde@gmail.com THANK YOU! |

The guy that is running my CompTIA A+ training class set up an exhaustive website that has more computer information, and resources than any sane person should need. There is a TON of free stuff, even more reference sites, and zero ads. I know I sound like a commercial, but his site is really worth checking out.

Religion: For New Testament textual criticism, a very important site is the the Institute for New Testament Textual Research. Not only does it have the text of the Nestle-Aland 28th Edition, but by clicking on the NT Transcripts section at the right, you have access to images and transcripts of hundreds of papyri, majuscules, miniscules and lectionaries, with more being added continuously. This means you can view the NA28 text of a passage showing all the collations, and there are images of the various witnesses to each section.
