Who should be in the pamphlet “Famous Jewish Sports Legends”...

When Airplane! came out in 1980? Today? Would the pamphlet be bigger today?

A few I found when I googled "Jewish Athletes" (there are many others, but these have some name recognition):

As of 1980:
- Sandy Koufax
- Hank Greenberg
- Lou Boudreau
- Lyle Alzado
- Mark Spitz
- Dolph Schayes
- Sid Luckman

Additional since then:
- Ryan Braun
- Kevin Youkilis
- Sasha Cohen (the figure skater, not the actor)
- Kerri Strug

I believe there's no evidence that Carew actually converted--he certainly married a Jewish woman, attended Jewish services, and raised his kids Jewish--but it's not at all clear that he ever "officially" became a Jew. Boudreau, I think, had a Jewish mother, but identified as Catholic. Do they qualify as Jewish?

My information could be wrong--too lazy to look it up just now--but I think it's correct.

I read a book about Jewish sports figures once. A lot of impressive athletes, and a few who were not so impressive... Still, any list that includes Koufax and Greenberg is an impressive list!

You know how nowadays, some people debate whether blacks have inherent racial advantages at sports, because they're so overrepresented in basketball and football? Well, back in the day (1930s, I think it was), people asked the same questions about Jews and boxing.

Jews were also basketball's ethnic stereotype then. Then somebody (it's contested) invented the jump shot.

Shawn Green (outfielder for Blue Jays, Dodgers, and other teams). He once hit four home runs in a single game.

I'd seen Baer on the list that Google generated when I googled "Jewish athletes" -- but, when I looked up his Wikipedia entry, it indicates that his father was "half Lutheran German and half German Jewish," that his mother was "of Scots-Irish Protestant American ancestry," and that he was "raised in a nominally nonsectarian home."

My Gentile understanding of Jewish lineage is that, according to the Code of Jewish Law, a child is considered to be Jewish if their mother is Jewish. By that reading, if I understand it correctly, Baer's father might have been considered to be Jewish (from a church law standpoint), depending on if his "half Jewish" lineage was his mother, but Baer, himself, would not have been.

The Jewish mother thing is mostly only important to the Orthodox. But him being raised in a non sectarian home would likely disqualify him from the groups who allow patralinial descent.

True, also Mark fought at UFC 1 and beat the brakes off his much larger opponent around 6 months after his brother's death. He could have been a champ in MMA if he had chosen to pursue it.

Francois Cevert from the same era, was also Jewish - or at least "half" Jewish, by ancestry, I have no idea about his personal beliefs and he's no longer around to explain them, but he was without a doubt legendary. Current F1 driver Lance Stroll is Jewish, and while only time will tell if he will be a legend, he's off to a decent start just by virtue of being in F1 at all, as he is literally not yet old enough to buy a beer.

Sure were. Does anyone here know what the original name of the (originally Philadelphia) Warriors was?

More of a footnote than famous, but I can't resist mentioning Mose Solomon, the "Rabbi of Swat," supposedly the Jewish Babe Ruth (The Sultan of Swat). He set a minor league record for homers in 1923 but played only a couple of games for the NY Giants in the majors.

Depending on the criteria...

Jack Dempsey claimed to have a Jewish great-grand-mother named Rachel Solomon. His wife sometimes called him "Ginsberg".

I believe Dempsey's family was nominally Mormon. Mormons call non-Mormons "Gentiles", including Jews. So, depending on the criteria, Dempsey was a Mormon Jewish Gentile.

I have to go lie down now.

But no one brought up Art Shamsky, member of the Jewish Baseball Hall of Fame. He has a new book out about the '69 Miracle Mets.

Moe Berg is more deserving of making the list of Great Jewish Spies, along with Sidney Reilly a.k.a. the Ace of Spies, and Two-Gun Cohen.

A tad bit early for either "famous" or "legend", but Jack Hughes, a hotly sought-after prospect, just became the first Jewish person to be the 1st overall draft pick in the NHL.

Not long after he won the heavyweight championship from Jack Johnson in 1915, Jess Willard attended a performance by magician Harry Houdini in New York City. Houdini was unfailingly gracious, introducing Willard to the audience as "our champion". But Willard was in a foul mood, calling Houdini a "fake" and a "four flusher". They had words, which ended with Houdini declaring that "one day, when you are no longer champion, I will still be Harry Houdini, and a gentleman".

It would have really cemented Houdini's reputation as a seer if he had added, "And four years from now, a skinny Jewish Mormon is going to beat the crap out of you".

Sam Snead, the pro golfer whose record for PGA wins is about to be broken by Tiger Woods.

Most people didn't realize Sam was Jewish, since he was a hillbilly from Appalachia and a professed Christian. But he gave himself away when he did a Pepto-Bismol commercial in the late 50's:

"I play golf for a living, so I can't afford to have an upset stomach on the Day of Atonement."

ETA: if you are mystified, read it out loud in a West Virginian drawl.

Having dated quite a number of Jewish girls and known their run of the mill Jewish families, this is not the case. Pretty much every one held this belief. The girls had a lot more latitude when it came to picking mates, the boys would feel the mother's wrath if they brought a shiksa home more than a handful of times. Mind you these were your every day suburban midwestern Jews, the kind that ate bacon, partied and drove on Friday nights and only busted out their yarmulke on the way to shul. None I would call "orthodox" or "conservative".
