Helicopter and aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky was born in Kiev, in what was then the Russian Empire and is now Ukraine, in 1889. He immigrated to the United States in 1919 after being threatened by the Bolshevik government, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1928. After a lifetime of remarkable aviation achievements, he died here in 1972. Earlier this year, the Kiev city government named its airport after him.

The Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is based in Stratford, Connecticut. It was established by Igor Sikorsky in 1923 and was among the first companies to manufacture helicopters for civilian and military use.
In 2015 Sikorsky was sold to Lockheed Martin.

There were only four "public enemies" ever given the title of "Public Enemy #1" by the FBI. John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson, were all killed before being captured. Alvin "Creepy" Karpis was the only one to be taken alive.

Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

"Floyd" is a variant of the Welsh name "Lloyd", resulting from English speakers attempting to pronounce it.

The initial double consonant "ll" in Welsh is difficult for English speakers. It's pronounced roughly like the "thl" in "athlete".

(And don't get me started on "Llewelyn"!)

The ancient battle standard of the Welsh is The Red Dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) and consists of a red dragon, passant (standing with one foot raised), on a green and white background. It appears on the national flag of Wales and dates back to the medieval era.

Red Dragon, first published in 1981, is a novel by American author Thomas Harris. This book marked the introduction of the character Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Although the book received generally favorable reviews, it was not a huge success until the 1988 release of its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs.

The first novel by Thomas Harris was Black Sunday, and achieved only moderate success[1] until it was sold to Hollywood. The 1977 film adaptation was a moderate critical and financial success, and sparked interest in the novel, a thriller about a plot by terrorists to commit mass murder during the Super Bowl in New Orleans, and law enforcement efforts to stop them. Harris wrote the novel after watching the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis where Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage and murdered them.

Harris–Stowe State University is a historically black public university in St. Louis, Missouri. It began as separate teacher colleges, Harris for white and Stowe for blacks, but mergered soon after the 1954 Brown vs Board of Education decision by the Supreme Court.

In St. Louis MO, in 1904, introduced was the soda drink Dr. Pepper, at the World’s Fair. It was created in Waco TX.

In St. Louis MO, in 1929, introduced was the soda drink 7 Up, just two weeks before the stock market crashed. It was originally called Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda, and it was manufactured there.

The soft drink brands Dr Pepper and 7 Up are both now owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, based in Plano, Texas. In addition to those two soda brands (and Snapple), the company also makes a number of other well-known soft drinks, including Canada Dry, RC Cola, Diet Rite, A&W, Schweppes, Vernors, Hawaiian Punch, and others.

The company was purchased earlier this year by Keurig Green Mountain, the maker of Keurig coffee machines and K-Cup pods. The merged parent company is now known as Keurig Dr Pepper.

The middle name of Dr. Leonard H. McCoy, Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise under the leadership of Capt. James Tiberius Kirk, has never been revealed as Star Trek canon. McCoy was played by DeForest Kelley on the original series and in the movies, and by Karl Urban in the reboot movies.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the most senior advisor on health matters in the British Government. There are four CMOs in the United Kingdom who are appointed to advise their respective governments: Her Majesty's Government, the Northern Ireland Executive, the Scottish Government, and the Welsh Government. The equivalent US term is the Surgeon General.

St Jerome was an abbot in Bethlehem when word came in August 410 that Rome had fallen and been sacked by an invading Gothic army led by Alaric. Jerome is said to have been silent for three days after hearing the news.

The Gothic Line, crossing northern Italy, was Germany's last major line of defense in the Italian campaign. The Allied Armies in Italy that breached it included the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, the only ground troops of the war sent by a Latin American ally.

Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark's U.S. Fifth Army comprised three corps: U.S. IV Corps, under Major General Willis D. Crittenberger, on the left formed by the U.S. 1st Armored Division, the 6th South African Armoured Division and two regimental combat teams ("RCT"), one of the U.S. 92nd Infantry Division (the "Buffalo Soldiers") the other the Brazilian 6th RCT (the first land forces contingent of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force); in the centre was U.S. II Corps, under Major General Geoffrey Keyes, (with the U.S. 34th, 85th, 88th and 91st Infantry Divisions supported by three tank battalions under command); and on the right British XIII Corps, under Lieutenant-General Sidney Kirkman, (composed of the British 1st Infantry and 6th Armoured Divisions, the 8th Indian Infantry Division and the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade).

Leslie Nielsen (1926 - 2010) was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. His mother was born in Wales and his father, a constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was born in Denmark. Before studying acting, Nielsen enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later worked as a disc jockey.

Nielsen's older brother, Erik Nielsen, served in the Canadian Parliament and was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1986.

Brian Mulroney announced that he would appoint Erik Nielsen as House Leader of the PC caucus within minutes of Mulroney defeating Joe Clark for the leadership of the PC party. It was an attempt to heal the party's wounds after a bruising leadership process. Nielsen had supported Clark.

Mulroney said "Erik, I may not have been your first choice for leader, but you are my first choice for House Leader." Since Mulroney did not have a seat in the Commons, it was a substantial gesture.

he first Nielsen ratings for radio programs were released the first week of December 1947. They measured the top 20 programs in four areas: total audience, average audience, cumulative audience and homes per dollar spent for time and talent. Since about October 2017, Nielsen has also begun to track select programs from specific partners that air on subscription-based video on demand (SVOD) services like Netflix. Partnering distributors insert a "tag" into the program to be distributed on these services which Nielsen can track without input from Netflix. Partnering distributors are able to determine if these ratings can be released publicly or not.

Harry Truman was President of the United States in 1947; in 2017, Barack Obama was President until Jan. 20, when Donald J. Trump was inaugurated. Truman and Obama are Democrats; Trump is a Republican, but had identified himself as an independent and as a Democrat earlier in life.

Bess Truman served as both First Lady of the United States and Second Lady of the United States. (The Second Lady is the wife of the vice-president.) Ms. Truman died in 1982 at the age of 97 years, 247 days. She currently holds the record of both the longest-lived First Lady and the longest-lived Second Lady.

Margaret Truman, the only child of Harry and Bess Truman, was a professional singer and actress, before focusing on writing. She wrote both non-fiction and fiction (including a series of murder mysteries set in Washington D.C.), though at least some of the books published under her name were apparently written by ghostwriters.

Harry R. Truman was a resident of the U.S. state of Washington who lived near Mount St. Helens. He was the owner and caretaker of Mount St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake near the foot of the mountain, and he came to fame as a folk hero in the months preceding the volcano's 1980 eruption after he refused to leave his home despite evacuation orders. Truman is presumed to have been killed by a pyroclastic flow that overtook his lodge and buried the site under 150 ft (46 m) of volcanic debris.

The sheriff in the David Lynch TV series Twin Peaks, set in Washington State, was also named Harry Truman. He was played by Canadian actor Michael Ontkean, who is now retired and declined to appear in the 2017 revival of the series.

Francisco Franco of Spain's height is listed as 5'3" or 5'4". In contrast, his contemporary Charles de Gaulle of France was over a foot taller, 6'4" or 6'5" and at St Cyr military academy was given the nickname of "the great asparagus" because of his height, high forehead, and large nose.

According to BuzzFeed, France spans twelve different time zones - more than any other country in the world - thanks to its overseas territories, which are dotted round the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, as well as South America.

The Collectivity of Saint Martin commonly known as simply Saint Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France in the West Indies in the Caribbean. It encompasses the northern 60% of the divided island of Saint Martin. The southern 40% of the island of Saint Martin constitutes Sint Maarten, since 2010 a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Princess Juliana International Airport (IATA code: SXM) is the main airport on the island of St. Martin, and is located on the Dutch (Sint Maarten) side of the island. The airport is named for Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who visited the island (and landed at the airport) in 1944, while still a princess.

The airport has a single runway, one end of which is located very close to the island's shoreline (and a popular beach). Planes landing at the airport fly directly over the beach, at a low altitude, while the jet exhaust from planes throttling up before taking off can also be felt at the beach; online photos and videos of these are very popular.

Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who was born in 1909, assumed the throne in 1948 when her mother, Queen Wilhemina, relinquished her royal duties due to failing health. Juliana reigned until 1980, when she abdicated the throne on her 71st birthday. Her eldest daughter, Queen Beatrix, reigned until 1913, when she abdicated in favor of her son, Willem-Alexander. He is the current King of The Netherlands.

The three boys in Judith Viorst's children's classic Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day are based on Viorsts three now grown up song: S: Anthony Jacob Viorst, an attorney practicing in the Denver, Colorado, area; Nicholas Nathan "Nick" Viorst, an Assistant District Attorney for New York County, and Alexander Noah Viorst, who finances affordable apartment properties around the country.

For over 100 years, from 1801 to 1917, every Russian Tsar was named either Alexander or Nicholas. It was due to Alexander I that the first name "Alexander", rarely used in Russia before him, and its variant Alexei, became common Russian names. The Alexanderplatz in Berlin, Germany is named for him, as was Queen Victoria of England, his god-daughter, who was christened Alexandrina Victoria.

Never mess with royalty with time machines.

In play:

Queen Victoria was not Queen of England, but of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. She was also the only British monarch to hold the title Empress of India.

A queen regnant is a female monarch, equivalent in rank to a king, who reigns in her own right, as opposed to a queen consort, who is the wife of a reigning king, or a queen regent, who is the guardian of a child monarch and reigns temporarily in the child's stead. An empress regnant is a female monarch who reigns in her own right over an empire.

Queens County, the easternmost and largest borough of New York City, was established in 1683 as one of the original 12 counties of New York. It was named for the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705), wife of Charles II and Queen Consort of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Mary, Queen of Scots, was in her private dining room in the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh with her secretary / musician David Rizzio and with her half-sister, Jean, Countess of Argyll, when a large group of rebels burst in and demanded that Rizzio be handed over. Mary refused; Rizzio hid behind her but was seized and stabbed to death by the rebels in her presence. At the time she was six months pregnant. The room can still be seen on tours of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and for generations visitors said that they could see bloodstains on the floor.

Walter Bagehot pithily summarised the principle of constitutional monarchy: "The Queen reigns but she does not rule."

Queen (the British rock band) formed in London in 1970. At the time, Freddie Mercury was known by his birth name, Farrokh "Freddie" Bulsara. When he joined Queen he changed his name and suggested the band name itself "Queen". Queen released its first album in 1973.

The Jesus is Savior's webpage on Freddie Mercury is on one hand a hoot and a half, and on the other a good illustration of the dangerous beliefs of the radical Christian groups.

Quote:
The Spirit of Sodomy

"The end-times spirit of Sodom was also evident in the events surrounding THE DEATH OF FREDDIE MERCURY (real name Frederick Bulsara), lead singer for the rock group Queen. Mercury was bi-sexual, and the group flaunted immorality and rebellion against biblical laws. Many of Queen's hard-rocking songs perennially remain popular rock anthems in sports stadiums and other forums. These include "We Will Rock You," "We Are Champions," and "Another One Bites the Dust." Their song "We Are the Champions" is an unofficial anthem of the homosexual liberation movement. Many of their songs are filthy and vile. Freddie Mercury said, "We want to shock and be outrageous" (Circus, April 1974).

We Will Rock You debuted in 1977. Actually, We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions were issued together as a worldwide top 10 single. Soon after they were released, many radio stations began playing the songs consecutively and without interruption.

The 2001 Heath Ledger film A Knight's Tale employed a number of modern rock songs in its soundtrack, and some viewers felt that the anachronistic music took away from the story (set in the medieval period).

Among the songs used in the film were Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" (the latter a re-recording with Robbie Williams on vocals), David Bowie's "Golden Years," Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town," and AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long."

You Shook Me All Night Long was released in 1980. It was one of several AC/DC songs on the movie soundtrack for Steven King’s Maximum Overdrive (1986) that also included Hells Bells and For Those About to Rock.

We salute you.

The movie’s screenplay was inspired by and loosely based on King's short story "Trucks", which was included in King's first collection of short stories, Night Shift.

Maximum Overdrive was Stephen King's one and only outing as a movie director. King has apparently stated that he was "coked out of his mind" throughout production of the film, and had no idea what he was doing.

The plot of the film revolves around machines becoming sentient after the Earth passes through the tail of a comet. A group of trucks begin to terrorize humans; one of the primary antagonists is the "Happy Toyz" truck, which has a giant replica of the face of a classic Spider-Man foe, the Green Goblin, attached to its grill.
