My "interesting car" story from today involves more than just a sighting.

It was my birthday last week, and as a surprise gift my wife bought me a little bit of wheel-time with these guys. It's a Southern California company that lets you pay for the privilege of blasting sports cars around a very short and very tight track. I had no idea what she had got for me until we turned into the parking lot and i saw the cars.

She bought me a half-dozen laps in the Ferrari F430, and another half-dozen in the Porsche 911 GT3, and it was a total blast. The acceleration and the grip of these cars, especially the Porsche, is unbelievable, although in some ways i was even more amazed by the power of the brakes. The GT3 had carbon ceramic brakes, and their incredible stopping power allows you to make the most of the very short straight on the course. Hitting the anchors is like running into a wall, with no fade and no brake softness at all.

Each drive was over in a few minutes, making it a pretty expensive little outing, but it was an absolute hoot. I'm under no illusion that i'm a race-car driver in the making, and i'm sure i came nowhere near testing the limits of these amazing cars, but i highly recommend doing something like this if you get the chance.

A C2 (1963-67) Corvette out cruising.

A C2 (1969-72) Chevelle convertible, in the state park parking lot where I was mountain biking.

I miss my 1970 Chevelle SS396!

Today, another BMW i3. They're multiplying like rabbits!

Last night saw a Canary Yellow Lotus Esprit V8...

Love that car...

Tomorrow I'll be going to my local ALPINA dealership for a meeting - so will probably "cop a feel" of the B4 (M4 Coupe) while I'm there

Yesterday, at the grocery store, I parked next to an exact replica of my 2002 BMW. The car had the same (so-called) "limited edition" pinstriping as mine and a few other matching oddities. I hung for a while hoping to meet the owner, but eventually had to scoot.

Yesterday it was a 4th Generation (1973-77) Chevy El Camino cruising down the highway in rush hour. It looked it quite good shape, I wonder if it was a restore job or just well kept.

This morning I saw an AC Cobra (probably a replica but I can't tell). Seemed a bit chilly at 6:30 to be driving with no roof, but the car looked great. Blue with the white racing stripe.

Silver BMW 2800CS. Looked like it was in original show room condition. Driven by an older man. Clearly an enthusiast.

Another Porsche 914 - that's two in one week! A veritable swarm of them.

Not quite that old I have a 2002 530i and my car twin was the same.

I do work with a guy who has several Alpinas. He has spent a truly startling amount of rehab money, but the cars are beautiful.

It's Back to the Fifties weekend in St. Paul. How can I pick a "most interesting" from all that? I'm still very keen on the looks of the original Thunderbird though. Powder blue of course.

A 2014 Cadillac ELR coupe. I don't think I've seen one before, sharp looking car from the side, not so impressive from the back.

From day to day I see the usual *yawn* assortment of Ferraris, Maseratis, Jag F-Types, and Teslas, but the one I noticed was a Nissan 350Z with a license frame saying "I'd rather be driving my Miata." So why wasn't he? Maybe the Z Car was his winter car and wasn't top-down weather, but it was nice enough. Later Zs always looked like lumberers to me, and if he wanted a lithe athlete he'd drive the MX-5.

Today, a Triumph Spitfire 1500 on a trailer that was as small as the car.

Yesterday was the more interesting vehicle: a WWII-era BMW motorcycle with sidecar, like in the picture.

A Suzuki Equator pickup.

I looked out my window the other day and saw this pickup on the street. It looked like a Nissan, but there was the Suzuki "S" in the middle of the grill. That seemed pretty strange, as well as seeing part of the model name on the side.
Anyways, after talking to the owner, he filled me in on the Equator. Seems it was a re-badged Nissan Frontier.
I never realized Suzuki produced such a truck.

A Porsche Boxster Spyder. They were pretty popular five years ago when they first came out, but lately I haven't seen one in many months.

I didn't actually see it today but my neighbor has an AWD Safari van with the Z71 off road package. It's super clean and definitely gets treated like a collectors item. I don't recall ever seeing one with the Z71 setup.
There's always the possibility that someone added the graphics to a regular all wheel drive Safari.
I've never met him or seen it up close but it's really sharp.

Here's one in a different color.

A bright red '62 or '63 Ford Falcon Ranchero.

If they built something like that today, I'd buy it.

Saw a Model A last night. Sort of a truck-style with a nice wood box.

A lot of DIYer customization of those things. E.g., the one my granddad did for the drive west from Oklahoma in the 30s with a family of 8.

Our PCA chapter gathered for a small town (Round Top) parade Saturday and I was parked next to a beautiful grey '63 356 S, a gorgeous car and superbly maintained. A variety of makes and models there from Turbo S to GTS to GT3, etc, a little over 30 in all so nice to browse the lot. Later a couple of Murcielagos and an Astin showed up, as did a wide variety of American muscle, '69 454 Camaro, '68 Chevelle, '74 Camaro, old Vettes, '40s pickups, etc. A really nice experience for a car enthusiast, plus there was pie (Royer's).

Nice. Our PCA chapter (LPR, Loma Prieta Region, and 356CAR, California Alta Region) gathered last Wednesday to celebrate the life of Ralph E. Maines who passed away last month. Most of us didn't bring our cars because parking was tight, but there were a few 356s there.

A year ago in May, we gathered for Ralph's 88th birthday. My wife and I, and her parents, can be seen in the video.

20 years ago Ralph helped us inspect a nice 1963 356 Cabriolet my wife wanted, and 20 years later our 356 is still running strong.

R.I.P., Ralph, and thank you for all you've done. And that's what she said!

Don't know if this qualifies, but I saw some Polaris Reverse Trikes on my way to the grocery store today. (I walk past this place all the time--they have some neat machines in their parking lot!)

My vote is that it counts. I've noted a motorcycle here before. And those Polaris machines look like sports cars. And at $20K each they cost about as much as a car.

Just got back from a trip to Italy, lots of very interesting cars on this trip. But I love the tiny micro cars that are available, didn't get all their names but some are adorable. Plus lots of Alfas, Citroens, and Renaults that I never get to see here.

72 & sunny early this morning, I was behind a clean & shiny classic Mata with the top down that you could just tell was garage-kept & only came out on days like this; bet that top hasn't been up in years.

Not strictly a "car," but . . .

Euclid Beach Amusement Park hasn't existed in almost 50 years. One of the big rides there consisted of a high tower, with 3 big chrome "rocket" cars spinning around it, each holding at least a dozen passengers.

Yesterday, I saw one of the rocket cars, filled with waving people, driving down a major avenue.

Another Shelby Cobra replica today, this time in orange. Also a Ford Model A cruising down a NH road headed for Old Homes day.
