Bus Crash Of Junior Hockey Players in Saskatchewan - Fatalities Confirmed

A bus carrying a Junior Hockey League team to a playoff game in East-Central Saskatchewan was T-boned by a semi today.

The Mounties have confirmed fatalities and injuries. Rumours say as many as 15 dead.

Witnesses say a crane has been needed to move the remains of the bus. Air ambulances have been carrying injured to hospitals.

Junior Hockey League teams have players ranging from 16 to 21, from anywhere in Canada or the States.

Tweets of sympathy and condolences from Prime Minister Trudeau, Premier Moe of Saskatchewan, and Premier Notley of Alberta.

Parents and grand-parents of the players are gathering in a local church in Nipawin, waiting for news …

My heart goes out to them.

"You are in Saskatchewan's hearts": Deaths confirmed in Junior Hockey team bus crash.

Bus Crash Of Junior Hockey Players in Saskatchewan - Fatalities Confirmed

Now confirmed: 14 dead; 14 in hospital, three with injuries described as serious. One player in hospital spoke with parents and said he can't feel his lower extremities.

24 on the team, plus coaches and driver; maybe 30 on the team bus, plus the driver of the semi. Pretty high casualty rate.

One of the ER doctors posted it was one of the worst nights of his life. Telling parents that their son was "only" seriously injured and seeing their faces light up.

This is just breaking my heart, I cannot even fathom how the families, team, league and town are coping. Has there been any preliminary information on the cause?

Everyone I speak too seems truly gutted by this story.

So many beautiful young people from one small community, is just heartbreaking.

Listening right now to a media conference. The Assistant Commissioner for F Division of the RCMP said that the investigation is ongoing. They are examining all issues: road conditions, weather, vehicles. The driver of the semi, who was not injured, was detained for questioning and subsequently released.

Investigation will take some time. The A/C said that last night there were approximately 50 Mounties on site carrying out the investigation and aiding the EMT.

Canalta Hotels, a local hotel chain, is offering free accommodation to family and friends who are coming to Humboldt.

WestJet has scheduled a special flight from Calgary to Saskatoon.

It's a tragedy of appalling magnitude to hit such a small community. When I first saw this thread I thought it was rehashing some old news from years ago -- I had not yet heard that this had happened. It's really heartbreaking in so many ways.

Article from the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, with an aerial picture of the crash site and short bios of the ones who are known to be dead.

The roof of the bus had to be cut off to get at the occupants.

Bus Crash Of Junior Hockey Players in Saskatchewan - Fatalities Confirmed

These young players from away get billeted to local people who open their homes to them when they join the team.

There's a Facebook post from a lady who billets the boys. She's posted a picture of three of them sitting at her kitchen table, saying that her three "sons" won't be coming home.

Final games tonight in the NHL season. Jets and Blackhawks have announced that they won't have their own names on their jerseys.

Every player's jersey will just read "Broncos."

Some news from the NHL:
https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-saddene...dy/c-297756132

I didn't realize the kids were so young:
The [Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League], which is a Junior A league under Hockey Canada and is part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, is open to North American-born players ages 16-20.

The death toll has risen to 15. There's now a photo of the crash site being circulated in the latest articles. Looking at what remains of the bus, I find it amazing that only half the occupants were killed.

I've read that the top of the bus had to be removed by emergency survivors in order to extricate the survivors, so that picture might be a bit misleading. Clearly anybody in the front of that bus was fucked though.

I assumed the transport truck t-boned the bus.

It looks like the other way around now.

ETA: Yes. The first emergency providers removed the roof.

All the articles I've read said it was the semi that hit the bus, but we'll have to wait for the RCMP accident reconstruction to know. If bith véhicules we're going full highway speed, either or both could have been spun around by the force of the collision

By the way, in case anyone's wondering what all the green stuff is in the photos, that's the semi's cargo - apparently he was making a delivery of peat moss, which is why it's all green and scattered so thoroughly - each package is pretty light.

Every article I've seen does indeed claim that the truck hit the bus, but we know how unreliable these early reports can be, and the pictures tell a different story. Judging from a couple of pictures taken from different sides, the front of the semi appears to be completely intact, while the middle of the trailer looks like it's been rammed. Meanwhile the whole front of the bus is missing. I'm no expert, and there are no official statements yet, but it sure does look like the bus hit the mid-point of the trailer at high speed.

Bus Crash Of Junior Hockey Players in Saskatchewan - Fatalities Confirmed

News article: Saskatoon ER Doctor calls Humboldt Broncos crash triage "most tragic night of my career."

• Royal University Hospital got the alert for multiple serious injuries, called a Code Orange.

• injured started arriving at the hospital around 10 pm

• organised chaos - staff that didn't all know each other just organised themselves into teams of two doctors, two nurses, and two therapists, to handle each patient as they came in.

• hospital had to turn away medical staff who were coming back off-shift to help, because they had too many.

• parents were telling medical staff to defer giving them updates on their own sons until everyone had been taken care of.

• people in Saskatoon were volunteering to bring food to the hospital so the staff didn't need to worry about taking meal breaks.

• Saskatoon blood donor clinic has been turning away donors, because the clinic is jammed with donors; urging them to re-schedule their visits for next week.

Apparently there have been some identification issues. These kids are too young to grow play-off beards so they all had their hair dyed blonde for the play-offs.

I can't believe ANYONE survived that crash, including the truck driver who apparently had only minor injuries. Just curious: does anyone here recognize what (most likely) he was hauling? The packages look relatively lightweight.

It was heartbreaking to look at that team picture, knowing that all of them are dead or severely injured.

Here's the junction:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ti...4d-104.0489835

The accident wreckage is on the NW corner, so the two vehicles were presumably traveling northbound on 35, and westbound on 335. There are stop signs controlling E-W traffic on 335 visible in various footage, but I don't think there are any stop signs on 35.

aerial footage:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...n-bus-tragedy/

There is wooded area on the SE corner of the junction. That probably means that vehicles approaching the junction from the S and E cannot see one another. I would say that all it took was for the westbound vehicle to miss the stop sign.

The packages were apparently bundles of peat moss for a garden centre. That's why they've scattered so much - they're pretty light-weight.

The team bus was north-bound to Nipawin. The semi must have been westbound.

The wreckage is on the NW corner of the junction, with the truck oriented N-S, cab pointing S. That seems consistent with the truck entering the junction headed westbound and being struck in the mid/rear by the bus traveling northbound. The truck gets turned 90 degrees to point south as momentum carries all the wreckage NW.

It's more difficult to envision how the truck could have been the northbound vehicle, based on the wreckage.

So it seems likely that for whatever reason the truck ran the stop sign, and was struck amidships by the front of the team bus. The trees on the SE corner meant that neither vehicle could see the other approaching the junction.
