Superbowl 53 game thread

I debated whether the playoffs thread would be okay for the superbowl discussion, and it probably would, but there will be various people coming into the forum who don't normally watch football so I figured its own thread would be warranted.

I also created a superbowl commercials thread in Cafe Society, as it ends up being two different discussions anyway. But if some commercial talk ends up bleeding into here that's okay.

Ok, so - I used to follow football, I understand the game, but haven't followed it for many years, haven't watched a single game this season.

Can somebody give a bit of context - quick summary of the the most important dramatic elements today?

I'm only watching 'cause its raining cats and dogs and there doesn't seem to be anything else worth watching on the 10763 other channels I pay out the butt for.

First and only Pro game I've watched in years.

Random thought: How has Suh avoided suspension/banning from the league? Hasn't he elevated the Cheap Shot to an Art Form?

How is that Cloths-line tackle not a foul?

He hasn't had any suspendable penalties this year.

Because the play was dead, and because it wasn't a clothsline.

Want to get drunk? Have a drinking game where you drink every time one of the announcers says something about what happened in the game "last week"

I don't watch a lot of football, in fact I watch exactly two games a year: the Superbowl and the Canadian equivalent, the Grey Cup.

However, I do have a question. It seems to me that if it was obvious that the QB was just throwing the ball away that intentional grounding would be called. Is intentional grounding not called any more?

If the QB is outside the tackle (usually the second guy on either side of the snapper), it's not intentional grounding, even if it was thrown away (which Goff did in this game).

Shouldn't the Rams have called time out at the very end of the half in order to force Brady to risk a safety again while downing the ball? That's a fairy precarious situation and he didn't seem to enjoy doing it.

I said the same thing. He knelt on about the 1/2 yard line on first down. Make him do it two more times. Probably nothing would happen, but it might have been interesting.

Could only do it once; I think they only had one-time out. But what have you got to lose? His first kneel was more iffy than usual, plus he lost yardage so the next one was going to be even stickier.

What are you saving that time out for? Christmas? I bet Belachick would have done it.

They only used 1 timeout in the first half, which was right before NE gave up the ball on downs with just over a minute to go. They had two left, which makes the decision not to call timeout even more puzzling.

I agree, but this isn't good defense, it's just bad offense.

The QBing is pretty awful, but both teams are doing a great job stopping the run. The Pats have played excellent coverage, and the Rams gameplan and tackling have severely limited the Pats O. Both teams are playing very good defense.

So far, all of the offense in this game has been Julian Edelman.

Great play by McCourty to save a Td. Followed up by a sack to make them settle for a field goal.

At least it isn't a blowout. I always hated those Superbowls that were over before halftime.

Finally a touchdown with 7 minutes to play in the game.

Over/Under was 56 points. The Under is looking pretty good right about now.

Gotta hand it to the Pats. Got the ball at their own four with 4+ minutes to play up 7. They marched down the field for the game-clinching FG.

LOL, I said pretty much the same thing.

I loved seeing Marshawn in sweats and a slouch hat in the middle of all those other players in business suits, during the Walter Payton award ceremony.

I can't remember a Super Bowl that was more "meh" than this one.

Don't get me wrong: it was a competitive game between two good teams but the anticipation wasn't there. There's the stench of corporate shit that is the LA Rams and then there's the Patriots, a team that's been there every year. Additionally, the commercials were the dumbest ever.

The Patriots are now the undisputed most successful franchise in the history of the NFL. The Cowboys, 49ers, and Steelers can no longer make that claim.
