Surprised so many people like garbanzo beans. They're grainy and blah to me. Avocados are delicious

I agree. I hate them too.

But I love hummus which is light years better.

Those awful beans are transformed. You should really give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised!

If you ever get to Chicago let me know and I will take you to a place that has super yummy hummus (as an appetizer...I'll pay for your main course too as long as you try the hummus).

This. Guacamole is just nasty. Those of you who say you hate hummus haven't had good hummus with good bread.

Also, I thought baba ganoush was that song by The Who?

I know you're funnin', but it's basically hummus made with roasted eggplants instead of chickpeas.

So, last night I made some nice hamburgers on the grill. When I bought the ground beef, I also bought small containers of hummus, Cole slaw, and guacamole. It was a very fine dinner.

A dip that can be augmented in countless ways or slime?

No brainer. Hummus. I've had dessert hummus that was like brownie batter. I have had few avocado dishes in my life, and the sliminess outweighed any flavor it might have added. I couldn't discern a flavor anyway.

Wait, if we choose guac, we're giving up garbanzos altogether?

If it's simply a choice between guac and guac-like stuff on the one hand, versus hummus and hummus-like stuff on the other hand, guac wins easily. But I include garbanzos in chili, soups, salads - all sorts of non-hummus-related uses.

If I have to give up all that, forget it, I'm giving up the avocados instead.

Anyway, the POLL says I'm just choosing between guac and hummus, so I'm choosing GUAC in the POLL. The OP says I'd also be giving up garbanzos, so I'm choosing HUMMUS here in the THREAD.

I'm not actually that passionate about either, but I cook WAY more eastern mediterranean food than mexican, so taking away hummus would cause some serious menu balancing issues.

Hummus.

I don't care for guacamole. I don't really care for avocados, period.

Truth be told, I could probably get by without both just fine, but I eat enough mexican that specifying "hold the guac" all the time would probably get tiresome. Hummus is good, but imo, too much calories for what you're getting. I hardly ever eat it now without any dilemma.

Oh, I eat hummus all the time. It's fine. I like it. There's a place I go to where I especially like it. But if I were told I could never have it again, I wouldn't be all that upset.

On edit: I just don't care for garbanzo beans qua garbanzo beans.

Hummus gives me severe heartburn, so this is an easy choice for me.

I'd ditch the guac. It tastes exactly how it looks: far too insipid for my tastes. But I'm not averse to it, in fact, if it is available I will occasionally put a tiny bit of it on my meal, and I won't deliberately scrape all the guac off of a dish (but will scrape off some if it is too much.) I just don't deliberately go out seeking guac.

Hummus, on the other hand, is something I seek out if it is on an hors d'oeuvre spread.

I'll choose the guacamole, but will live out the rest of my life in a state of barely suppressed rage, frequently pausing whatever activity I am engaged in to bitterly curse the OP for taking away my hummus.

I don't know who is making your guac but if it ends up more insipid than hummus you've been short changed.

My guac is jam packed full of perfectly ripe tomatoes, spring onion, chilli, coriander and lime. The taste of avocado is subtle to the point of irrelevancy but the perfectly ripe flesh is the delivery system for the above strong flavours, and it should be strong, it should be the king of all it touches.

Hummus is great, don't get me wrong, but there is a reason you have a trend for strong flavoured varieties of hummus, by itself and in the classical form it is a far more subtle flavour than guacamole.

Only in Egypt.

(Egyptian falafel is made from fava beans).

I"ll take the hummus over the...the...errrm, harumph, uh, I can't really say what guacamoldy and avocado are to me. Disgusting is the most polite thing I guess.

Hummus is pretty good though, even without trying to bring it down by comparing it to, THAT nasty...stuff...

I am genuinely amazed that so many folk despise avocado. It seems similar to how many react to cilantro.

Tastes like grass? I had no idea.

Hmm, I don't despise avocado, but of course it tastes like grass. I didn't realize anyone didn't taste that.

"Buttery", yes. "Nutty", yes. But "grass"? Unless grass tastes vastly different than I think it does, I don't see it.

Me neither, unless you are having some seriously underripe avocado.

Well, I don't think it tastes like grass, but appearance plays a part, guac looks like baby poop, and I've never cared for the flavor. actual avocado is kinda soft and squishy and very slimy in texture and made me think of semi-solidified snot more than anything every time I've had the unfortunate experience of tasting it. The flavor of avocado is sort of sweet, but also sort of fat, but not in a good way, insipid and sort of rotten at the same time.

Buttery? If it tasted anything like butter, I would love it.

I like the taste of grass. When I'm outdoors, I often pluck a grass stalk and eat the little soft growing bit at its base. And yes, avocado tastes quite a bit like grass. That's what's GOOD about it. What's bad about it is that it's slimy and has very little flavor.

I would rethink that, as I recall an article on prisons in Texas Monthly back in the day. It reported that prisoners claimed avocados were prized for having the closest feel to a vagina for sexual purposes. Really.
