How do you eat a baked potato?

I recently saw someone pick up the whole thing and eat it end-to-end like a hot dog. I had never seen anyone do that before. It never even occurred to me that someone would do it like that.

How do you do it?

Innards with lots of butter, then the shell, which tastes so good. Save the best for last.

If you can mash up a baked potato then there's something wrong with how you cooked the skin.

While I wouldn't have ever come up with "shell" to describe the skin of a baked potato, I eat the fluffy innards with lots of butter and sour cream (and sometimes cheese and bacon bits), then usually cut up the skin into bite-size pieces for yums.

More or less the same but I like to add cottage cheese.

Load up the potato with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, lots of pepper and some salt. Then use my knife to cut into bite-size pieces, skin and all. Then add more pepper.

I eat the inside and then maybe half the skin. Unless it's a supreme example of potato-goodness, I probably won't eat the bottom half of the skin. No real reason except that I'm usually potatoed out by that point.

I have done that. Didn't seem unusual to me, but my gf thought it was odd.

More or less how I eat it, but just butter, salt, pepper. The skin? Maybe, it depends on how burnt it is. Usually I leave it.

Personally, I use a spoon or a fork. I eat the insides first, then I'll eat the skin (unless it looks bad). This accounts for my indecision on the appropriate utensil; a spoon works better for the insides while a fork works better for the skin (and I don't like switching utensils halfway through and getting two of them dirty).

The only time I eat them by hand is if they're little one, like appetizers.

I eat it the first way, but I mash the innards and toppings together first. Mandatory toppings are butter, sour cream, chives, salt, pepper. Sometimes I add some grated cheddar and a few dashes of Tobasco. Yum-O!

Anybody here ever bake them by burying them in the coals of a campfire?

I love potatoes in many forms, but not the baked ones. So if I did had to eat one I would scoop out as much "meat" as I could from the skin and mash it up with a fork, adding butter and salt in a quick approximation of mashed potatoes.

In another recent food thread I wondered out lout if I was 'eating mashed potatoes incorrectly". I cut it cut it in half, plot some butter on each half, add salt, and mash it up as I go along. I never eat the skin.

Cut lengthwise, moosh it several times between the fingers, cut in butter, salt, and pepper, then stir in sour cream. Add more butter, salt, pepper, sour cream as needed. Eat between cutting and eating slices of grilled rib steak.

I throw out the shell, as my dear grandpa, the best cook I ever knew, said “The PEEL???? You feed that to the GEESE.”

To each his own, but grandpa was very wrong.

Innards with whatever - then butter & salt & pepper the shell, the tougher the better.

I make incisions in the innards with a fork or knife, the better to accept melted butter, than I eat the innards with the butter and whathaveyou, then I put more butter and stuff inside the shell and eat it with my hand.

Back when I still ate potatoes...

I mashed up the innards and mixed them with whatever else was on-hand. Then ate the shell.

Huh, I had no idea there were so many ways to eat a baked potato, and so many people don't eat the skin!

I cut it in half lengthwise, and squeeze it to mush up the innards a bit. Then I flatten it with my fork and put butter on, then cut it into bite-sized pieces. I eat the insides and outsides - as bite-sized pieces - with a fork.

Slice into it with a sharp steak knife, cutting the sour cream into the mixture, eat with fork, including peelings, insides, etc.

Slice lengthwise. Fluff a bit with fork. Add butter, salt, pepper, sour cream, and then just eat it by cutting off pieces. I never really thought of it till now.

I usually cut it up into pieces, so that's what I answered.

Unless it's a Tater Pig. In that case, I pick it up and eat it like the guy the OP saw.

(it's a fair food in Bozeman, consisting of a potato with a hole bored through it, then baked with a sausage in it, and served with the usual "loaded" toppings)

I cut open the potato, nearly all the way in half. Mash up the insides with butter and salt and pepper, and eat that with my meal. If I'm still hungry at the end, I'll butter and season the potato skin, fold so it's skin side out, and eat that with my fingers like a small sandwich or slice of bread.

I normally slice it in half, score each half, and apply butter (the scoring allows melting butter to sink into the innards better). Sometimes just sprinkle salt. i don't need anything else.

I don't usually eat the skin, but sometimes I do. I don't normally pick it up and just bite into a whole one but sometimes I do, if it's small.

Add butter, aged cheddar, sour cream, salt, pepper, and chives, mash the innards up with the additives, and eat that, leaving the shell.

I don't know which poll entry covers spooning Wendy's chili (doctored up with their chili sauce and sour cream) inside the potato and eating a bit at a time.

And I've never, ever heard of a potato skin or peel called the shell.

I'm like most other people and I cut open the potato and add butter, salt and pepper to the insides and mash them up and eat the inside first. I normally save some of the steak I'm eating with my potato so I can put a slice inside the skin with salt and pepper then pick it up and eat it like a sandwhich. I'll normally eat my wife's skin too.

I see that a lot of us pretty much take the baked potato and make mashed potatoes out of it. Except for the skin, which has to be FED TO THE GEESE.

I’m curious...why don’t we just make a pot of nice mashed potatoes (with whatever additives we like) and serve that, so that we don’t have to let the expensive steak cool down while we fuck around getting the baked potato ready?

Because mashed potatoes don't have that nice crispy skin that a well-cooked potato does. And the skin is the best part.

Mashed (i.e., boiled) and baked potatoes taste different. I don't know if everyone perceives this, but I sure do. Even if they're baked in an electric oven instead of with flames or coals, they have a smokey flavor.

Baked potatoes are one of the few things I can cook.

Wash them prick some holes and into the microwave.
Meanwhile prepare the thinly sliced steak and gravy.

(Of course you can eat them with butter and stuff as mentioned in the thread - but for me the skin is jolly tasty.)

A baked potato stuffed with Chili, sour cream & cheddar is a complete meal.

We usually make it for dinner at least once a month.

I'll eat some of the skin because of the nutrients.

Cut it in half, longwise. Cut a grid into the flesh. Add butter, and likely some combination of cheese, bacon, and sour cream. Give the butter and cheese time to melt, then...eat it one end to the other like described in the OP.

The Baked Potato Stall at the Royal Highland Show, near Edinburgh, used to have a sign next to it which proclaimed:

Every skin has vitamins in
Not to eat it is a sin
But if in doubt
Don't be a lout
Please put your leavings in the bin

Innards first, then the skin. Butter is the only topping I use now. I miss the days where I could eat them with bacon and cheese in college and not gain a pound. Baked potato bar was a thing at my college dorm cafeteria.

End to end, like a hot dog. That's right. It's an excellent self-contained food package that way.

Either I cut it up and eat it in pieces or I eat the innards first and then the shell.

Sour cream, butter, bacon and cheese are needed obviously.

Oddly, I seem to be almost the only one who doesn't really eat baked potatoes. I like them pretty much every other way, but baked doesn't do it for me.
