If Alex Trebek Retires from Jeopardy!, Who Should Replace Him?

I have three people in mind, all who have hosted game shows:

1. Jane Lynch, although she is a wonderful actor and it would be a lot to ask her to do both.
2. Howie Mandel, known for being comical but would be mature enough and engaging enough to pull it off.
3. Brooke Burns, the one I'm most on the fence with but I think she would be great.

A little too on the nose, but Will Ferrell in character would be great.

I know that this isnt possible unless they buried Huell in the Pet Semetary, but Tennessee native Huell Howser would have been a brilliant Jeopardy host. Im not sure that he is known outside of California, but he had a perfect balance of humor, empathy and intelligence.

Either of these two would get my vote. Also Brad Rutter or James Holzhauer.

But I'm sure Trebek's replacement has already been chosen.

It really is a very difficult question.

Jeopardy is a show about questions. Trebek has always been a little pompous, but he also does a great job of not trying to make the show about himself. Add even a couple extraneous minutes of vamping or comedy and suddenly you don't have enough time to clear both boards on air.

So you need somebody who can keep the show running smoothly like Trebek.

But you also need somebody who is distinct, because Alex Trebek is Jeopardy. If viewers get the impression that the new host is just a cheap copy or a purposeful imitation, it won't go over well.

I'd nominate Ryan Reynolds. I think he would make a great host.

Previous thread from July 2018, when Alex said in an interview that he might retire in 2020. I think this was before the cancer diagnosis. The thread includes some suggestions, including some names mentioned above.

Is that what we said when Art Fleming was replaced on the second reboot?

I dunno - I wasn't around back then. But there was a long gap between him and Fleming. I doubt Jepoardy's showrunners will want to wait five years before they start filming again.

We just watched an episode of The Joey Bishop Show two nights ago. I remembered him as being better on that show than what we saw.

So the first Curly clone is still alive and well ... in reruns on Antenna TV. Check your TV Guide.

I was way too young to have ever watched the Art Fleming version but it's safe to say that Jeopardy! is a much bigger phenomenon now than it was then.

"If" he retires??? Is dying considered retiring?

This is all planned out way ahead of time by the producers. I realize there is no one easy answer.

I figure they will do the better part of a year with guest/test hosts. Some serious, some not. It will be a mix of former contestants and B-listers who might want the job and A-listers and others who don't want the job but would do it for fun and ratings.

There were 5 years of no Jeopardy! between Art Fleming's last season, and Alex Trebek's first.

It's unlikely that there'll be a more significant gap between Alex's retirement and his replacement's start than a regular hiatus.

So Art->Alex was a different sort of transition than Alex->Post-Alex will be.

I have no actual suggestions about who should take over, except to say that if it absolutely has to be someone who got big by appearing as a contestant, it should be Brad Rutter. (I went over my objections to James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings in the main Jeopardy! thread.) I'm not a big fan of the idea of Brad taking over, either, but of all the big contestants, I think he has the best balance of presence and restraint, which a host for Jeopardy! (or similar game) would require.

I tend to agree. We'll see a rotating cast for a while, maybe changing once a month or so. I'm sure the producers have a list of options that they're already working with. Anderson Cooper and Ken Jennings are the two most obvious. I really like the suggestion of Jane Lynch. With "The Good Place" ending, I'd love to see Kristen Bell have a run as host, and not only because it gives me more opportunities to look at her. I mean, partially that.

This suggestion is WAY off base, but I'd like to see John Cena give it a shot.

As an aside, I had the Playstation version of Jeopardy and if you went into Final Jeopardy with a sizeable lead, Alex would say, "The outcome of this game seems assured, that is, of course, unless somebody pulls off a Clavin."

Any voice actor would be good, hopefully someone recognizable, but not tied up in a leading role. John Ratzenberger is a great suggestion. The last time the Dope had a thread on this I suggested Wil Wheaton and I still think he's be good. Anybody from "The Good Place" but I'm sure they have better things to do. Nick Offerman, while I think of it.

If you are looking for a serious answer, Joey Fatone. Watch Common Knowledge: he’s likeable but straight forward. He is also great at explaining the right answer when the contestant gets it wrong.

Meredith Vieira. Some game show experience ("Who Wants to be a Millionaire"), but she also has solid news credentials and talk show experience. She strikes me as a broadcast personality with a wide range of experience and who would take the hosting position as seriously as Alex Trebek.

If she weren't 75 (and therefore likely excluded from consideration), I think Anne Robinson, who hosted the UK version of The Weakest Link, would make a good Jeopardy! host.

John Ratzenberger is almost as old as Alex Trebek. If Ratzenberger replaces Trebek, it's probably not going to be for long.

My suggestions already have been mentioned.
Trebek himself has endorsed Tom Bergeron (cite not available, but I probably could find it if I tried hard enough).
Andy Richter was the best celebrity Jeopardy! player ever.
Aisha Tyler is a great host, clever and quick. She would be my top vote.
